    What is MSC.Fatigue?

MSC.Fatigue is an advanced life simulator that allowsanalysts to easily transform finite element stress and strainresults into fatigue life predictions. Fatigue analysis is anatural extension to a stress analysis. In fact, a fatigueanalysis is basically a stress analysis that is subjected torepeated loads and that takes into account durabilityproperties of a component or structure.

MSC.Fatigue enables analysts to leverage traditional stressanalyses with state-of-the-art methodologies forcomprehensive durability simulations early in the designcycle.

MSC.Fatigue takes stress or strain results from finiteelement (FE) models, subjects FE load environments touser-defined time variations, and applies cyclic materialproperties & damage logic to predict service life.MSC.Fatigue leverages the state-of-the-art resultsvisualization capabilities of MSC.Patran to report damage

    and life predictions

MSC.Fatigueincorporates all threemajor aspects of fatiguelife prediction

Total life: This is the traditionalstress-life, or S-N, methodwhich typically does notdistinguish between initiating orgrowing a crack, but rather,

predicts the total life tocatastrophic failure, orseparation into two or morepieces.

Crack Initiation: Sophisticatedstrain-life (-N) modelingprovides a method forestimating the life of adesigned part before a crack ofa specified size develops. Thismethod is also known as thelocal strain method and is usedto model safety critical

    components.

Crack Growth: Linear elasticfracture mechanics (LEFM) isused to predict the progress ofa crack through a componentto the point where rapidfracture causes ultimate failure.LEFM is generally used forstructures that must bedamage tolerant.

Whether designs are driven by safelife, fail-safe, or damage tolerant

criteria, MSC.Fatigue is the choice.By combining state-of-the-art crackinitiation and crack growthapproaches, it is possible to predictthe total life of a design and tounderstand the relative importanceof various fatigue characteristicswith regard to the life of a structure.

PRODUCT SOLUTIONSHow long will it last? What if it breaks? What should the warranty be? These are criti cal questions asked bymanufacturers. Fatigue is a process that causes premature and even catastrophic failures of in-service productssubjected to repeated loads, resulting in costly recalls, damaged reputations, and, in severe cases, loss of life.MSC.Fatigue answers these critical questions and helps manufacturers create quality products that will endure, ensure

product safety & customer satisfaction, and reduce costs.

    Key Capabilities

MODELING:MSC.Fatigue provides advanced graphical modeling capabilitiesfor manipulating FE meshes, defining fatigue and fractureparameters, and preparing analytical models for fatigue lifeprediction.

ANALYSIS INTEGRATION:MSC.Fatigue supports FE results from a large range of FE codessuch as MSC.Nastran,MSC.Marc, ANSYS andABAQUS. Analysis typessupported include linearstatic, transient, frequencyresponse, random vibrationand residual stresses fromnonlinear analyses.

MATERIALS DATA:MSC.Fatigue features a comprehensive materials database

manager to generate, define, query, compare, tabulate, andgraphically view cyclic materials data. The MSC.Fatiguematerials database supports monotonic, nominal stress-life(component and material S-N curves), crack initiation, and crackgrowth data sets.

SERVICE LOADS:MSC.Fatigue allows access to realistic, complex loadingdescriptions as well as experimental and measured data througha comprehensive time history manager. Facilities are available forcreating, editing, and manipulating load time histories as well ashistograms and PSDs in user-defined fatigue units (miles, hours, laps, etc.) and much more.

RESULTS VISUALIZATION:MSC.Fatigue provides avariety of techniques forvisualizing damage and liferesults including graphicalcontour plots, tabularlistings, sensitivity plots, and cycle damagehistograms.

Solution for Competitive AdvantageMore than just a software product, MSC.Fatigue is a designoptimization solution created to help you gain a competitiveadvantage!

The benefits of MSC.Fatigue include: Reduce and eliminate unnecessary and expensive tests Faster time-to-market at a lower cost Gain insight into product response Perform sensitivity studies Minimize over-design Simulate misuse Optimize for fatigue and damage tolerance

REDUCE TESTING COSTS (TIME & MONEY)Fatigue tests are the most costly and time consumingstructural acceptance tests performed by manufacturers. Adesired and obtainable goal is to reduce the number of teststo one: the final acceptancetest. By helping to reduce thenumber of tests, even by one,the investment in MSC.Fatigue

    more than pays for itself.

OPTIMIZE PRODUCTS FORFATIGUE LIFEFatigue testing alone will notaddress all critical designaspects of a product. In fact, testing alone will rarely result inan optimized product. MSC.Fatigue provides a systematic, analytical approach to product life assessment, facilitatingthe consideration of product durability upstream in thedesign-for-manufacturing process. Product design studiesusing MSC.Fatigue helps engineers evaluate designconcepts and changes early in the design cycle before aprototype is ever created. This optimizes product durability, encourages faster time-to-market, and reduces prototypingand testing costs.

MINIMIZE OVER-DESIGNSEven products for which fatigue is not a critical issue canbenefit from MSC.Fatigue. MSC.Fatigue will provide insightas to the response of such infinitelife products with respect toservice environments. Byidentifying when fatigue begins toplay a critical role for theseproducts, an engineer candetermine adequate factors of

safety to achieve a desired servicelife without wasteful over-designsand unnecessary manufacturingcosts.

CREATE COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGENearly a half century agothe advent of finite elementtechnology providedmanufacturers acompetitive edge byraising the bar on the cost-effectiveness andpredictability of complex

systems. MSC.Fatigue, with its state-of-the art lifesimulation technology, extends this competitive edge once again by helping youoptimize your product for safety, durability, and reliability.MSC.Fatigue leaves those that take advantage of thistechnology well ahead of the competition.
