News Highlights UWI Takes NBMC Top Spots The University of the West Indies, Mona (UWI) placed first and third in the recently concluded annual National Business Model Competition (NBMC), with two out of its five student-entrepreneur teams securing a combined cash prize of J$2.5 million. First place - Team JA Bio Plastics represented by Jordon Freeman (Faculty of Science and Technology) and Samantha Williams (Faculty of Social Sciences) and Third place - Team Pree Labs represented by Yekini Wallen-Bryan, Matthew Stone and Kriston Kong (Faculty of Engineering), made their winning presentations to a panel of private-sector judges in the final round of the national competition on Friday, March 22, 2019. They competed against 13 other teams across four universities - UWI, Northern Caribbean University, University of Technology Jamaica and Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts. Other UWI teams to participate in the competition were Align Technologies, ReRoute and Carib Voxx. This is the 2 nd consecutive year that UWI has won the Competition. UWI Takes NBMC Top Spots

The University of the West Indies, Mona (UWI) placed first and third in the recently concluded annualNational Business Model Competition (NBMC), with two out of its five student-entrepreneur teamssecuring a combined cash prize of J$2.5 million. First place - Team JA Bio Plastics represented byJordon Freeman (Faculty of Science and Technology) and Samantha Williams (Faculty of SocialSciences) and Third place - Team Pree Labs represented by Yekini Wallen-Bryan, Matthew Stone andKriston Kong (Faculty of Engineering), made their winning presentations to a panel of private-sectorjudges in the final round of the national competition on Friday, March 22, 2019. They competed against13 other teams across four universities - UWI, Northern Caribbean University, University of TechnologyJamaica and Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts. The pilotproject - a collaboration between theconstituency office of South East St Andrew;the Mona School of Business andManagement (MSBM) through the CaribbeanOpen Institute and the SlashRootsFoundation - aimed to provide a model forcivic participation, strengthening democracyand transparency, across all constituenciesin Jamaica.

Mona School of Business and Management(MSBM) hosted a customised 5-dayworkshop “Data Visualization – BusinessAnalytics for better Management Decisions”for decision makers from The UniversityHospital of the West Indies, beginningOctober 23, with final presentations on the6th of November 2018. The Workshopinformed participants of Data Visualization –Business Analytics as an effective businesscapability for sense-making, analysis, insightand communications. The goals of theWorkshop were for participants tounderstand how visual representations willhelp in the analysis and understanding ofcomplex data, how to design effectivevisualisations and how to create interactivevisualisations using Tableau. The Workshopwas designed and customized by the DataScience team at The University of the WestIndies.

On Tuesday, October 2, 2018,representatives of Mona School of Businessand Management (MSBM) visited VauxhallHigh School and made a presentation of 40combination tablet arm chairs. Thecontribution is part of MSBM’s outreachprogramme for the development of educationin communities. Mrs. Marvalyn Campbell,Manager, Facilities and Support Services,MSBM is a proud past student of VauxhallHigh School and was part of the team thatmade the presentation. Budding student entrepreneurs from variousfaculties at the University of the West Indies,Mona (UWI) gathered at the UWI RegionalHeadquarters on Friday, January 25 2019 topitch their business ideas in the finals of theVincent HoSang UWI Venture Competition.At the end of the pitching sessions, thejudges, Douglas Halsall, CEO, AdvancedIntegrated Systems; Sherene Duncan-Clarke, General Manager, Regus Caribbean;Robin Levy, Group CEO, Jamaica Co-operative Credit Union League and LisandraRickards, CEO, Branson Centre ofEntrepreneurship – Caribbean selected thetop three businesses. They are: Ja BioPlastics, Pree Labs and Carib Voxx whichreceived cash prizes to the tune of $300,000,$200,000 and $125,000, respectively.

Mona School of Business and Management(MSBM) congratulates undergraduatestudents Vicky-Ann Reynolds and De'jaHowell who won the 2018 GTTP ResearchCompetition in Nice, France in December2018. They were among 20 secondary andtertiary students from 10 countries whopresented research findings on Innovation inTourism at the GTTP student/teacherconference. The students who representedJamaica at the Competition wereaccompanied by their Lecturer Mrs. ErithaHuntley Lewis. This win marks the fourthtime that The University of the West IndiesTourism Society members have entered andwon this competition under the supervision ofMrs Huntley-Lewis.

The University of the West Indies, MonaFaculty of Social Sciences Annual PostGraduate Awards Ceremony to recognizeoutstanding academic performance for 2017-2018, was held on Thursday, November 22,2018 at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge andConference Centre. One hundred andtwenty-five Mona School of Business andManagement (MSBM) Graduate studentsreceived distinctions, thirty-seven of whomwere awarded with Best-in-Programme andBest Concentration Awards. In addition to aDistinction in the programme, Mr LaronHarris, a graduate of the MSc in Computer

MSBM Undergraduate studentforges through pain ofmother’s death to completedegree

Despite tough circumstances, Mona Schoolof Business and Management student ArdoSpaulding graduated on November 3, 2018with a Bachelor's of Science in ManagementStudies, majoring in Accounting. Life forSpaulding changed when he was only 13years old, after his mother was shot andkilled. Following the death of his mother, whowas the sole breadwinner, Spaulding saidthat his 23-year-old brother took on the roleof being a parent for his six siblings.

JSE Recognizes MSBM Research on Family Owned Businesses

For the second time in the history of the 51 year-old Jamaica Stock Exchange, the recognition of abook was used in the ceremonial bell-ringing ceremony to signal the opening of the day’s trading. Thehistoric event took place on Wednesday, February 27, with the recognition of a book co-authored by DrLawrence Nicholson, from Mona School of Business and Management and Dr Jonathan Lashley, from,the Cave Hill Campus, The University of the West Indies. The book, “Understanding the CaribbeanEnterprise: Insights from MSMEs and Family Owned Businesses”, represents part of the output of theresearch being done by Dr Nicholson on family-owned businesses in the Caribbean.
