UWI Takes NBMC Top Spots
The University of the West Indies, Mona (UWI) placed first and third in the recently concluded annualNational Business Model Competition (NBMC), with two out of its five student-entrepreneur teamssecuring a combined cash prize of J$2.5 million. First place - Team JA Bio Plastics represented byJordon Freeman (Faculty of Science and Technology) and Samantha Williams (Faculty of SocialSciences) and Third place - Team Pree Labs represented by Yekini Wallen-Bryan, Matthew Stone andKriston Kong (Faculty of Engineering), made their winning presentations to a panel of private-sectorjudges in the final round of the national competition on Friday, March 22, 2019. They competed against13 other teams across four universities - UWI, Northern Caribbean University, University of TechnologyJamaica and Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts. Other UWI teams to participate
in the competition were Align Technologies, ReRoute and Carib Voxx. This is the 2nd consecutive yearthat UWI has won the Competition.

The Campaign,which was executed via traditional and socialmedia, featured several well-known industryleaders as well as young and rising leaderswho are alumni. The School also hosted aWebinar and two Information Sessions inKingston and Montego Bay as part of theCampaign. These events saw more than 300hundred young professionals in attendance,the main purpose being to promote the rangeof globally competitive post graduate degreeprogrammes available at MSBM includingthe Internationally Accredited MBA.

A group of MBA students from the ClaytonState University, Georgia USA, led by Dr.Alphonso Ogbuehi, Professor of Marketingand International Business, visited Jamaicabetween March 1-10, 2019 as guests ofMona School of Business and Management(MSBM). The trip which was part of their“Study Abroad” programme includedmeetings with MSBM faculty and students,attendance to lectures by MSBM faculty anda social outreach project arranged by MonaSocial Services where they donated books tostudents of Mona Commons Basic Schooland August Town Primary School.

Jamaican citizens living or working in theSouth East St Andrew constituency weregiven the opportunity to advise the Memberof Parliament, Julian Robinson, how heshould spend funds earmarked for thedevelopment of the community. The pilotproject - a collaboration between theconstituency office of South East St Andrew;the Mona School of Business andManagement (MSBM) through the CaribbeanOpen Institute and the SlashRootsFoundation - aimed to provide a model forcivic participation, strengthening democracyand transparency, across all constituenciesin Jamaica.

Preliminary research from Mona School of Business and Management (MSBM) indicates that somekey sectors which drive export and economic growth have declined in Jamaica. The assertion wasmade by Dr William Lawrence, Director, Professional Services Unit, MSBM and Lead Researcher forthe study of Jamaica’s performance in the Global Competitiveness Survey at the public forum“Transforming Jamaica’s Economic Competiveness” hosted by the School on Wednesday, November7, 2018.

Mona School of Business and Management(MSBM) hosted a customised 5-dayworkshop “Data Visualization – BusinessAnalytics for better Management Decisions”for decision makers from The UniversityHospital of the West Indies, beginningOctober 23, with final presentations on the6th of November 2018. The Workshopinformed participants of Data Visualization –Business Analytics as an effective businesscapability for sense-making, analysis, insightand communications. The goals of theWorkshop were for participants tounderstand how visual representations willhelp in the analysis and understanding ofcomplex data, how to design effectivevisualisations and how to create interactivevisualisations using Tableau. The Workshopwas designed and customized by the DataScience team at The University of the WestIndies.

On Tuesday, October 2, 2018,representatives of Mona School of Businessand Management (MSBM) visited VauxhallHigh School and made a presentation of 40combination tablet arm chairs. Thecontribution is part of MSBM’s outreachprogramme for the development of educationin communities. Mrs. Marvalyn Campbell,Manager, Facilities and Support Services,MSBM is a proud past student of VauxhallHigh School and was part of the team thatmade the presentation. The gift was receivedby Vauxhall Principal Prudence Brown-Pinnock and Chairman of the Board, Mr.Christopher Honeywell. Budding student entrepreneurs from variousfaculties at the University of the West Indies,Mona (UWI) gathered at the UWI RegionalHeadquarters on Friday, January 25 2019 topitch their business ideas in the finals of theVincent HoSang UWI Venture Competition.At the end of the pitching sessions, thejudges, Douglas Halsall, CEO, AdvancedIntegrated Systems; Sherene Duncan-Clarke, General Manager, Regus Caribbean;Robin Levy, Group CEO, Jamaica Co-operative Credit Union League and LisandraRickards, CEO, Branson Centre ofEntrepreneurship – Caribbean selected thetop three businesses. They are: Ja BioPlastics, Pree Labs and Carib Voxx whichreceived cash prizes to the tune of $300,000,$200,000 and $125,000, respectively.

Mona School of Business and Management(MSBM) congratulates undergraduatestudents Vicky-Ann Reynolds and De'jaHowell who won the 2018 GTTP ResearchCompetition in Nice, France in December2018. They were among 20 secondary andtertiary students from 10 countries whopresented research findings on Innovation inTourism at the GTTP student/teacherconference. The students who representedJamaica at the Competition wereaccompanied by their Lecturer Mrs. ErithaHuntley Lewis. This win marks the fourthtime that The University of the West IndiesTourism Society members have entered andwon this competition under the supervision ofMrs Huntley-Lewis.

One hundred andtwenty-five Mona School of Business andManagement (MSBM) Graduate studentsreceived distinctions, thirty-seven of whomwere awarded with Best-in-Programme andBest Concentration Awards. Despite tough circumstances, Mona Schoolof Business and Management student ArdoSpaulding graduated on November 3, 2018with a Bachelor's of Science in ManagementStudies, majoring in Accounting. Life forSpaulding changed when he was only 13years old, after his mother was shot andkilled. Following the death of his mother, whowas the sole breadwinner, Spaulding saidthat his 23-year-old brother took on the roleof being a parent for his six siblings.
Based MIS (CBMIS) programme, alsoreceived awards for the Best Final Project inthe MSc CBMIS, Best AcademicPerformance in the MSc CBMIS, and theGraceKennedy Award for Best OverallAcademic Performance at MSBM which waspresented by Mrs Naomi Holness, ChiefHuman Resources Officer, GraceKennedyLimited. Other corporate entities thatsponsored special awards were First GlobalBank, Jamaica Employers Federation (JEF),CIBC FirstCaribbean International Bank,OGM Integrated Communications Limited,IBM Caribbean and Sagicor Life. JSE Recognizes MSBM Research on Family Owned Businesses
For the second time in the history of the 51 year-old Jamaica Stock Exchange, the recognition of abook was used in the ceremonial bell-ringing ceremony to signal the opening of the day’s trading. Thehistoric event took place on Wednesday, February 27, with the recognition of a book co-authored by DrLawrence Nicholson, from Mona School of Business and Management and Dr Jonathan Lashley, from,the Cave Hill Campus, The University of the West Indies. The book, “Understanding the CaribbeanEnterprise: Insights from MSMEs and Family Owned Businesses”, represents part of the output of theresearch being done by Dr Nicholson on family-owned businesses in the Caribbean.

The Students' Loan Bureau (SLB) is beingurged to adopt more flexible policies, asresearch has uncovered that it is losingclients to commercial banks. Dr DelroyChevers, Senior Lecturer at Mona School ofBusiness and Management, The Universityof the West Indies (UWI), made the call in aninterview with the Jamaica Observer aheadof Research Days, held February 6 to 8,2019 on the UWI Mona Campus.

Mona School of Business and Managementparticipated in The University of the WestIndies, Mona’s Research Days 2019(February 6-8, 2019) themed “DrivingResearch for Social and EconomicDevelopment”. The School created adynamic display of its innovations andachievements which invited visitors toexperience the Business School as an activeparticipant in national and regionaldevelopment. Set within the context of Vision2030, the Exhibit “Building Blocks for Vision2030: Entrepreneurship, Business andManagement” featured the dynamic work ofMSBM, and its alignment with the goal ofmaking Jamaica the place to live work andraise families.
Handcuff by the educationsystem – MSBM Senior lecturerurges changes in approach ofteachers
Dr Lawrence Nicholson, Senior Lecturer andHead of the Decision Sciences andInformation Systems Unit, Mona School ofBusiness and Management is calling for aradical change in the approach of teacherswho are moulding young minds for the futureas he posits that the Jamaican educationsystem is an enemy of entrepreneurship andenterprise.

Deputy Executive Director, Mona School ofBusiness and Management, Dr Lila RaoGraham and co-authors were recognized ata Reception to launch the 3rd AnnualCelebration of Books Exhibition on Monday,October 8, 2018. Their co-authoredpublication “Knowledge Management forDevelopment: Domains, Strategies andTechnologies for Developing Countries” wasselected to be featured in the exhibitionwhich was mounted in The University of theWest Indies Mona (UWI) Main Library fromOctober 8 – 31, 2018, showcasing thedistinguished scholarship of staff of The UWIMona who have published books during thelast academic year. The book was alsofeatured as part of the UWI’s 70thanniversary celebrations exhibition whichfeatured 70 books published over the periodthe UWI has been in existence.
