Greetings Shooters!Where has this year gone?

Here we are in August and another shooting year is coming to a close.

The Michigan State Cham-pionships were held last week and I wish to congratulate all the winners. Special congratula-tions go out to Pat Wusthoff and Dave Pratt, who became first time state champions. Congrat-ulations! Thanks to all of you who came and participated. In addition, I would like to thank the State Shoot Committee for the exceptional effort they put into the State Championships. They are: Trish Magyar, Brent Edwards, Loraine Malloy, Tom Pavlack, Dave Scott and Scott Behnke. It is our hope that everyone had a great time.

The MSA Board of Directors will hold their next meeting on November 7, 2009 at Saginaw Gun Club. It will start imme-diately after the 2010 Referee clinic and date selection meet-ings. Our newly elected board members for two year terms are: Brent Edwards, Bob Edwards, Tom Irish, Jeff Rimer, Dave Scott and Ed Weycker. Joining them are the other current members of the Board: Jane Carpenter, Al Magyar, Trish Magyar, Loraine Malloy, Dave Schiebel and my-self.

The MSA Board decided in April that we needed to cut some costs from our budget and one of these was the newslet-ter. The three (3) issues of the newsletter cost the MSA over $5,800.00 last year. The MSA Board would prefer not to raise

fees so it was decided to place the newsletter on the website. We need you to provide us with your email address so that we can notify you that the newslet-ter is ready. The MSA website www.michiganskeet.com has all kinds of information about our organization. Please mail your email address to Trish Magyar at [email protected] with a subject line of “eMSA news”.

The Board is continually working to stay within a budget so that we can continue to fund a great State Shoot and pay our bills. We are always open to sug-gestions from our MSA mem-bers. Feel free to contact me or any of the other Board of direc-tors if you have any questions.

PLEASE NOTE: The Editor apologizes for an oversight in the May issue of the newsletter. I inadvertently left out Edward Bowker, from Hickory Corners, who made the 2009 Class All American Teams in E Class. Congratulations Edward and please accept my apologies. I also left Jeffrey Rimer off the list of first 100’s. Sorry Jeffrey! I have reprinted those reports in this issue so that the guys can have them for posterity.

Note the changes below:

1) The MSA Board approved a reduction in the minimum target requirements, to align with the revised NSSA standards that make you eligible for the All State Teams and NSSA Teams for 2008/9. These may change in the future back to the original amounts, but until further notice the amounts required are: 12Gauge, 1,000 targets; 20 Gauge, 28 Gauge and .410 are 800 targets; Doubles, 500.

The next annual Referee Clinic, Shoot Scheduling and Board meeting will be held on Saturday, November 7, 2009 at Saginaw Gun Club at 10:00 a.m. The Referee Clinic will be first, followed by the Shoot Scheduling and the Board meeting.

2009 Class All American Teams Congratulations to our 14 Winners in Zone III !!!

“Class All-American Teams” replaces the “Class All Zone Teams” Teams begin-ning with the shooting year 2008. Selection is based on the shooter’s beginning regular HOA classification (AAA-E). Classification for new shooters will be based on the first five events of the current year. Targets must be shot at registered shoots or in registered leagues to count for this recognition. Points are the same regard-less of the number of competitors in a shoot eliminating geographical differences awarded at registered shoots. They are: 100 points Class 1st in a 100 target event;75 points Class 2nd in a 100 target event; and 50 points for Class 3rd in a 100 target event. Points will go up and down proportionately based on targets shot. For example a 50 target event would provide 50 points for class first; 37 points for Class 2nd; and 25 points for Class 3rd. Event champion, runner-up and third will get 100 points in their class.

To be considered, a shooter had to shoot NSSA minimums of 800; 800; 800; 800; and 300 doubles. Shoot-ers can track their standings throughout the year on the NSSA website.

• All shooters in AAA-E are eligible if they are classified in the 4 guns and have shot the Class All-American minimum targets including the 300 doubles targets.

• If you are selected to an Open All-American Team you are not eligible for consideration. Selection for an All-American Concurrent Team is not a factor.

• Open All-Americans will be selected first then Class All-Americans to insure there is no duplication.• League class place will count and be included at the end of the year.• Monthly targets will not be considered.• No additional administrative burdens as the computer automatically assigns points based on report-

ed class places.• No need to travel away from local area. Shoot at your surrounding clubs and have an equal chance

for consideration.• Watch your points accumulate at mynssa.com.

The following teams will be selected in Classes AAA-E for a total of 245 shooters each year. First and Second Teams (10 shooters per team) will receive patch, pin and certificate. Honorable Mention Team (15 shooter) will received pin and certificate.

As you can see below fourteen (14) of our Michigan Shooters have been selected. They are listed on page 5 with their points. Congratulations to our great Michigan shooters!

By Rick Marsh

Quite likely the largest skeet shoot in the 73 year history of Detroit Sportsmen’s Congress (DSC) was held April 25 and 26. Largest in many things; number of shooters, amount of added money and prizes, along with the number of additional games. This is a completely new experi-ence for us at DSC and wow, what a great experience it was. Much thanks is owed to our sponsors and the hard work of Rick Trawinski and Pete Panta-lena.

Thirty-eight shooters were chomping at the bit to get going as Saturday morning dawned with very high winds (30mph) but comfortable temperatures at 75 degrees. Those kinds of wind make for a very interesting game of doubles, but a rare few were still able to pull out a re-spectable score. Ross Szarenski took Gun Champ, Rich Curlett was Runner Up and Ted Zolnos-ki took event third. Class cham-pions were: A1- Pat Wusthoff, B1-Mike Delgado, C1-Frank Pantalena, D-1 Tom Fudold.

With Doubles, out of the way we were off to the 12 gauge event in slightly less but more erratic wind, with gusts to 50 re-ported, just to keep it fun. Event champ was Pat Wusthoff, Run-ner Up Ross Szarenski, Event 3rd Rich Gromek. Class champs were A1 – Dave Ewers, B1-Ted Zolnoski, C1-Mike Delgado,

D1-Tom Fudold, and E1-Kent Dolmyer. It’s great to see shoot-ers of all classes, get out there and bust a great score in this kind of weather.

The 28 gauge was in nice weather with just a touch of wind, enough to keep it darn interesting. Of course it didn’t bother those that stayed the course and didn’t change their game … winners here were Event Champ Dave Ewers, Pat Wusthoff stayed hot with Run-ner Up, and Event 3rd going to Bob Refice. Class Champs included Brent Edwards at AA1, Gary Scheiwe for A1, George Innes for B1 (after pounding this writer in a shoot-off wasting all of two shells), Rick Trawinski took C1, and Tom Fudold was back with D1.

Shoot-offs for Saturday’s events were held and then the rain and truly hard wind started. A scheduled fun shoot for some grand prizes from our sponsors, Wild Hare, Cow-boy Way Gunsmithing, Briley, Hodgdon Powder, Great Lakes Sporting Arms, Decot Glasses, Beomat Traps, LaPorte Traps and Targets, had to be post-poned until Sunday afternoon.

Sunday was like we had moved the shoot to a better state, but that’s the skeet season here in Michigan. Don’t like the weather; wait 15 minutes and it will change. Sunday we had calm 5 mph winds and 72 degrees, a wonderful day for a shoot and the scores really showed it (as did the smiles on the shooters faces).

20 gauge opened this new beautiful day and Brent Ed-wards took advantage nailing the only 100 straight in this windy weekend, and giving him Event Champ. Runner up went to shooters with fine 99’s, settled at the shoot-off with Dave Ewers Runner Up and George Gilliam settled for Event 3rd. Class Winners were AA1-Pat Wusthoff, A1- Ross Szaren-ski (who seemed to be having a very fine weekend, after pound-ing his buddy Steve Nelson at the shoot-off), B1-Rich Curlett (after a fine shoot off with George Innes), C1-Gary Scheiwe and D1-Kent Dolmyer.

At last, we come to the pee-shooter, 410 event, and the one that separates the men from

the boys. We did have perfect weather for shooting this little fella, giving many of us fine per-sonal best scores, but no 100’s. Event Champ went to Brent Ed-wards with 99, after a fine shoot-off with Pat Wusthoff, Steve Nelson snagged Event 3rd only one back at 98. AA1 went to George Gilliam, Pete Pantalena finally came alive for his favorite gun to win A1, Ross Szarenski was back with 94 to take the B1 class, Rick Marsh had a personal best to take C1, and Rick Tra-winski nailed D1.

Gunsmith Rick Stover and his business “Cowboy Way” spon-sored the fine watch shoot for a chronograph bracelet watch

valued at $400. Most everyone was in the running, due to the handicapped HAA score. Pat Wusthoff was able to win the watch outright, after a close call from one shooter that may have had a touch of buck fever. I guess pressure is what makes skeet fun and I’m sure he will get ‘em next time.

We finished the weekend with two fun shoots with prizes from Wild Hare, Great Lakes Sporting Arms and Briley. The first fun shoot included nearly all shooters, who shot 3-4-5 doubles with a hefty handicap to keep the newbies in the hunt. After nearly two boxes of shells, the four winners were Steve Nelson, John Klida, Bob O’Brien and Rick Marsh. (O’Brien hav-ing only a 1 handicap … some were getting 14!) The Second shoot was won out right by a team of new shooters and their instructor Gary Scheiwe, Kent Dolymer, Jim Van Eaton, Jim Parsons. Great job shooting and a special thank you to range manager/skeet instructor Gary Scheiwe!

We had fine pullers and great staff making the whole weekend memorable and enjoyable, spe-cial thanks to Kristen Pantalena for all the hard clerical work and questions from the shooters, as usual she was assisted by our always present Nelson Baker, with years of experience under his belt. Sula Saylor took care of the pro shop for ammo and kept the hot dogs coming. Thanks also to Dave Balaj who nearly single handedly kept the traps

Six Michigan Lady shoot-ers attended this year’s Ladies Charity Skeet Classic which was held at the Memphis Sport Shooting Association in Arling-ton, Tennessee on April 24th, 25th and 26th, 2009. Those who attended this year were: Rosa-lyn Argyle, Sharon Day, Sally Hubbard, Trish Magyar, Mary Jo Birka and Loraine Malloy. We missed Jane Carpenter and Thelma Brown who were unable to attend this year. This year shoot was attended by women from 25 states. We also had one Canadian Shooter join us, Fleur Dolan. This was Fleur’s first Ladies Charity shoot and she was awarded one of the David-son sponsorships to attend, her sponsor was one of our Michi-gan Ladies.

We were all hoping for many things this weekend; first and foremost a successful fund rais-ing event for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital; seeing shooting friends; making new shooting friends; shooting some good scores. We knew, at least we hoped that we did, that this years weather would have to be better than last year. Looking back, I think we succeeded on all fronts.

2009 Ladies Charity Skeet Classic

The shoot raised $100,000.00 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, which I think is amaz-ing with the current state of the economy. If you supported us in our fund raising efforts, thank you! Please visit the hospital’s web site to learn more about this Hospital that never turns away a patient due to the lack of health insurance. The research being done here is continually better-ing the cure rate for childhood cancers. It is a wonderful orga-nization, and we were proud to help in this fund raising effort.

Trish Magyar finished the weekend with an HOA of 388 and was “crowned” this year’s Ladies Charity Shoot HOA Champion. Trish also finished High Gun Runner Up in the Iron Woman competition. This event totals the skeet HOA scores, the 100 target sporting clays event, and the Ladies Handgun event. Nice shooting Trish! Mary Jo Birka, was shooting her first

registered skeet targets at this event, and finished third in the novice 12 gauge skeet event. Mary Jo also participated in the Doubles and Sporting Clays event. Loraine Malloy finished A2 in the 12 gauge event. (After the 7 97’s shot off). Loraine also finished as Ladies Smith and Wesson Hand Gun Champion this year, after a series of shoot off’s with Debbie Perry. The award was a Lady Smith .357 Handgun, donated by Smith and Wesson. Rosalyn Argyle finished D2 in the 410 event. Sharon Day had took home a Smith and Wesson side by side that she won in the drawings that are part of the fun on Satur-day night.

Still to come is the announce-ment of the Triple Crown Event. The shooters participating in this event had seven other shoots to choose from to com-plete the triple crown. The last shoot in this string is the US Open in September. It will be fun to see who wins this compe-tition that was new to the shoot this year.

Again thank you to all of the Michigan Shooters who helped to support this fund raising event.

The 20th Annual Pat Hay-wood Open was hosted by Wayne County Sportsman’s Club the week end of June 12th, 13th and 14th, 2009. This shoot is held in memory of Pat Haywood, who was the second person in Skeet history to shoot a 400 x 400. Pat accomplished this on May 17th and 18th, 1969, at the Thunderbird Gun Club in Belleville, Michigan.

The weekend began with the EJ Kaneris Inc. Doubles Event on Friday, we thank Ernie for joining our list of sponsors this year. Twenty eight shoot-ers participated in the doubles event this year, a slight pick up in attendance from last year. The weather was cool, with just a bit more wind than one would wish for. John Fournier shot a very nice 98 to finish as Event Champion, and was awarded a flat of 20 gauge shells which was furnished by the Event Sponsor. Jim Sykes, Bruce Christian and Pat Wusthoff took to the shoot off field to settle Event Runner Up. Jim Sykes finished as Event Runner Up, Bruce Christian finished AA1, Pat Wusthoff A1, Michael Bushart B1, Jane Car-penter C1, and Todd Carlson D1.

On Saturday we awoke to clear skies and less wind than on Friday. Multi Drywall & Parti-tion, LLC was our 12 Gauge Event Sponsor, and all 48 par-ticipants in the event would like to thank them for their contin-ued support of our registered skeet shooting program. Only

one shooter managed to break all 100 targets, Al Magyar, and thus finished as the 2009 12 gauge Event Champion. Five shooters finished with scores of 99 and took to the field to settle

places via shoot off. Duane Lamley finished as Event Run-ner Up, David Ewers as AA1, Doug Keister A1, Roger Day A2, Frank Pantalena B1, C1 was won

by Pete Pantalena with a 98, and 97’s shot off for D1 and D2, with Gary Scheiwe finishing with D1 and one of our Junior Shooter’s Chase Cabble finishing D2.

The second event of the day, the Dawson Enterprises 20 Gauge Event, saw five shooters with 100’s! The first order of business, before the shoot off, was a hat shooting ceremony, in honor of Mike Bushart’s first 100 in the 20 gauge. Very nice shooting Mike! Then the five shooters with 100’s took the line for the Event Shoot off. Brent Edwards was declared Event Champion, David Ewers Event Runner Up, Al Magyer AA1, Pat Wustoff AA2, Steve Nelson finished A1 with a 98, Michael Bushart B1, Bill Wells C1, and Sharon Day D1.

The final shoot off of the day was the BCDE Shoot off which was sponsored by Crown Plating. Crown Plating also sponsored our January shoot, and we thank them for continu-ing to support our programs. Eligibility for this shoot off is determined by the shooters class in the 12 gauge event. This year saw 28 shooters take the line for this event. This is some of the shooters first shoot off experi-ence so it is always a fun event to watch. The shoot off this year was won by George Innes and Gary Scheiwe. Both the Winner and Runner Up where given a flat of 20 gauge shells that were provided by the event sponsor.

To wrap up the days events, shooters could continue to test

their skills in the 60 Second Flush Event sponsored this year by CA Sykes Tax Service. This seems to be a very popu-lar event, especially with our

younger shooters. I’m not sure if we ran every one out of shells, or if shoulders gave out, but the competition went on long into

the night. The team of Dave Pratt and Jim Sykes finished in first place, and took home the prize money. Pretty fitting as Jim’s wife Cathy was this year’s event sponsor. We would also like to thank Cathy and CA Sykes Tax Service for the bottled water that they provided for the fields this weekend. After the conclusion of the 2 man 30 bird flush, Bruce Christian created a new game - the one man thirty bird flush! I’ve heard rumors that Bruce wants to add this to the program at the Mid-America next year!

Saturday concluded with a “cook your own” steak roast. We would like to mention that our “meat Vendor” JNS Meats provides us with a gift certificate each year which is presented to our Champ of Champs winner.

Sunday started with our Michigan CAT 28 Gauge Event. Thank you Michigan Cat for the continued support. 38 shooters participated in this years Event. Two of the 38 posted 100’s and took to the line to settle Event Champion and Runner Up. Our congratulations go to Bruce Christian as Event Champion and Pat Wusthoff as Event Run-ner Up. Brent Edwards finished AA1 with a 98, Robert Petro was A1 with a 99, Mike Bushart was B1 with a 98, Todd Carlson C1 with a 96 and Sharon Day D1 with an 89.

The 410 Event was spon-sored by A-1 Auto Salvage and Scrap, another of this year’s new Haywood sponsors. Our Event

Champion Robert Petro was very happy to be awarded a flat of 20 gauge shells for his Event high 99. Wayne Harvey fin-ished as Event Runner Up after a shoot off with Brent Edwards, who finished AA1. Three 95’s took to the shoot off line to settle

places in A class. Dave Pratt ended as A1, Pete Pantalena as A2, and Tom Pavlack as A3. Lo-raine Malloy was B1 with a 93, Jane Carpenter was C1 with a 88, and Larry Van Overbeke was D1 with an 84.

Pat and Judy Wusthoff’s com-pany Restoration & Reclamation Services was our HOA Event Sponsor this year. We thank them for both supporting and shooting in our shoots! Three shooters finished the weekend with a score of 391 and lined up at station 3 to break the tie. Brent Edwards finished as Event Champion, Robert Petro (last year’s HOA Event Champion) finished as Event Runner Up (its getting harder and harder for me to believe that he is a trap shooter!) Bruce Christian fin-ished as AA1 with a 390, Duane Lamley finished as A1 with a 391, Michael Bushart finished as B1 with a 386, Todd Carlson finished as C1 with a 362 (This is Todd’s first year shooting reg-istered targets, we hope to see both he and his son Nathan at many more shoots!) Sharon Day finished D1 with a 349. Event Champion, Runner Up, and each of the Class Winners were awarded flats of shells.

Our HAA Event was spon-sored by Downriver Surgery Center. Bruce Christian and Duane Lamley ended the week-end tied with 487’s. After the shoot off, Bruce was Event Champion, with Duane taking the Event Runner Up spot. AA1 went to Brent Edwards with a 484, A1 to Pat Wusthoff with a 486, B1 to Michael Bushart with a 479, and C1 to Todd Nelson.

The skeet committee at WCSC would like to thank all the shooters who participated in this year’s shoot. We real-

ize that most shooters have had to adjust shooting schedules to reflect changes in our house-hold economies, we therefore thank you for spending some of your shooting dollars with us. We hope that you can join us for one or more of our Steak Roast/Mini Shoots or our Fall Open in September. Please plan on attending our 21st Annual Pat Haywood Open, it could be the year that a shooter wins our

$4,000.00 4 X 4 jack pot, and that shooter could be you!

To all of our sponsors, both Old and New, thanks for your support, and contributions to our sport. We hope more of you will join us in shooting the event next year.

Till then, remember to always shoot 2 at low 8!

North Macomb Sportsmen’s Club held their 5th annual Dad’s Day Open on Father’s Day weekend. We kicked everything off with the Doubles event on Friday evening and Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. We took to the fields under nice conditions and a lone 100 was posted by Bruce Christian for the Cham-pionship. Class winners were Chester Kowalski (AA) in a shoot-of 98’s with Ray Pollister; Ross Szarenski (A); Bob Refice (B); Jim Dzieciolowski (C); and Kent Dolmyer (D).

Saturday’s conditions were warm and sunny, but breezy and slightly humid. But even though it was the 12 gauge, only two shooters came through with 100 and headed for the fields. Dave Schiebel and Bruce Christian did their best and left Schiebel to be crowned Cham-pion. Surprisingly there weren’t many shoot-offs and the results were as follows: Bruce Christian (AA); Pat Wushthoff (A); Ted Zolnoski(B); Pete Pantalena (C); Michael Bregand (D); and Bill Brawford (E).

The afternoon saw unusual results as there were no perfect scores for the 28 gauge event. On a perfect day it was Dave Schiebel who took the event unchallenged with a 98. The other class winners were: Dean Rossman (AA); Bob O’Brien (A); Frank Pantalena (B); Greg Ma-halak (C); and Richard Rine (D).

Conditions for the official Dad’s Day were warmer and steamier. The 20 gauge event

Dad’s Day Open – June, 2009

brought several special events. Jim Van Eaton, a new regis-tered shooter, shot his first 25 straight. Rich Curlett shot his first 100 straight in the 20 gauge event and we had five (5) per-fect scores and they headed for the shoot-off field. They were: Dean Rossman; Bruce Christian; Dave Schiebel; Rich Curlett and Bob Refice. After the smoke had cleared from the shoot-off field, Rossman emerged as Champion, with Bruce AA1. Class winners were Bob O’Brien (A); Rich Cur-lett (B); Michael Delgado (C); and Kent Dolmyer (D).

The final event, the .410 Bore, brought one perfect score of 100 from Ray Pollister. Class win-ners were: Dean Rossman (AA); Trish Magyar (A); Frank Panta-lena (B); Del Mahan (C); and Ryan O’Leary (D).

The HOA Event Champ was Dean Rossman; and Class HOA winners were Bruce Christian (AA); Dave Schiebel (A); Bob Refice (B); Ryan O’Leary (C); and Michael Bregand (D).

A big note of “THANKS” goes out to Tony and Mike Costa for providing a delicious choice of meals both days. Also, thanks to Jane Ewers for show-ing up early to help Tony and our other NMSC volunteers who lended the Costa’s a hand.

Special thanks go to our own NMSC Crew who guaranteed the targets were set perfectly; Joe Riley and his corps of vol-unteers, who kept the houses loaded and fields cleaned; the referees for all of their great pulling; and Christa, who gladly took everyone’s money and en-sured all the scores were posted and shoot-offs ready to go after the last shot was fired.

Thanks to Bob O’Brien who gathered all of the sponsors for this shoot, who are listed below. Thanks to Dave for getting the computer program, learning

how to set it up and run it, and for putting together the fantastic looking program. We look for-ward to next year’s Dad’s Day Open at North Macomb, which should be even bigger and better than this year! Plan to join us.

By Loraine Malloy

It is hard for me to believe that it is time to wrap up the 2009 Scholastic Clay Target Pro-gram. The year has just flown by. The program continued to grow this year, seemingly in spite of the economic prob-lems that we are facing here in Michigan. We saw an increase in participation at the State Shoot this year. The number of competitors in 2009 was 123, up from 108 the year before. (The sporting clays discipline which runs concurrently with the skeet program, saw an even larger increase in state shoot participa-tion this year!). We are pleased to announce that Western Wayne County Conservation Association has rejoined the pro-gram after an absence of several years. Western Wayne was one of the first Michigan Clubs to send shooters to the SCTP Na-tionals, and we are glad to have them back in the program.

2009 MICHIGAN SCHOLASTIC CLAY TARGET PROGRAM

This is the first year that the program has been run by the Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation, and the new folks in charge did a great job for their first year, we expect to see the program continue to improve. The program is open to young shooters in 5th through 12th grades.

We started our program a little earlier this year, with a coaches clinic that was held in February at Kent County Con-servation League. The partici-pants seemed very happy with the content of the clinic and stated that they felt it was a good addition to the program. We thank Tim Wiley and Pat Lieske for their help with the clinic. Plans are underway for a second clinic early next year.

We only hosted two fun shoots this season, we would like to thank Grand Blanc Hunt Club and Island Lake Gun

Range for welcoming us to their facilities this year. Our third fun shoot that was to be held at Centerline Gun Club was cancelled due to school closings during the swine flu outbreak. We thank the members of these Clubs for allowing us to “take over” their Clubs for the day!

The purpose of these fun shoots is to introduce the young shooters to each other, and to provide them with the experi-ence of shooting in a competi-tive format. The coaches work with the shooters during these fun shoots to further instill gun safety and shooting fun-damentals, as well as methods to keep the teams focused and moving. The program is a team focused program. Teams are comprised of 3 shooters in the same age division from the same group. A group can be a gun club, school district, 4-H group,

boy scout or girl scout group; or any other group that supports a youth program. This format has allowed up to squad two teams together to shoot on the same field, thus allowing the shoot-ers to meet each other and form lasting friendships.

Our MI SCTP State Shoot was held at Detroit Gun Club again this year. We would like to thank all of the members at De-troit Gun Club for allowing us to take over the Club for a day to host this event.

The competitors are divided into five groups based upon the individual’s school grade and years of experience in the SCTP program. We had 23 teams, and several alternates in the Senior High School Varsity Division this year. These teams are shooters in ninth thru twelfth grade with prior experience in the program at the high school level.

The senior high school Junior Varsity Division had 8 teams, and several alternates partici-pate in the State Shoot this year. This division is comprised of teams that have not partici-pated in the program in the high school category, in the past. So these are shooters new to the program, or who have moved up from the Intermediate Divi-sion

The intermediate division is comprised of shooters in the sixth through eighth grades.

2009 MICHIGAN SCHOLASTIC CLAY TARGET PROGRAMContinued from page 19

The advanced division is for shooters with prior shooting experience in the program. We had five teams participate in this division.

The intermediate entry divi-sion is for shooters in the 6th through 8th grades with no prior experience in the program. We had six teams competing in this division this year. This participation is up from just two teams last year, we are pleased to see this increase in younger shooters.

The final division is the Rook-ie Division, which is shooters in fifth grade and below. We did not have any teams participating in this division this year.

As in the past medals were supplied by the SSSF for the top three teams in each division. The Michigan SCTP Program awarded Savings Bonds to the top three teams. Each member of a first place team was award-ed a $100.00 savings bond, members of the second place teams were awarded $75.00 sav-ings bonds, and members of the third place teams were awarded $50.00 savings bonds. Please see the list at the end of this article for the winners from this years state shoot.

The last item to be awarded at the State Shoot is the Individ-ual Skeet High Gun SCTP Belt Buckle. The belt buckle this year was awarded to Brandon Miller from Wayne County Sportsman’

Club. Brandon shot an impres-sive 95 in some pretty windy conditions.

The National SCTP Event was held in Sparta this year on July 25th and 26th. Michigan was represented this year by teams from Genesee County Sportsman’s, Flat River Con-servation Club, Wayne County Sportsman’s Club and Western Wayne County Conservation Association. We are proud to report that the Intermediate Entry Team from Wayne County Sportsman’s Club finished the event tied for first place in their division. They finished in second place after a shoot off with a team from Georgia. The members of the team are Jeffrey Rimer, Trent Olson and Michael Matney. Great shooting!!

We would like to thank the MSA and the skeet shooters of Michigan for their support of this wonderful program. Your financial support has allowed us to run this program with little additional fund raising and has allowed us to award medals to the top teams at each of the fun shoots, and Savings Bonds at our State shoots for each of the past five years.

We would also like to thank all of the organizations who sponsored a field for the State Shoot. This money was used to complete the funding of the sav-ings bonds for this year’s State Shoot.

Last but not least, a big thanks goes to the Friends of the NRA. The MI SCTP, as well as several of the organizations with teams have received grants to help de-fer the expenses for these young shooters.

If you are interested in the 2010 Michigan Scholastic Clay Target Program either as a coach, shooter or a sponsor please contact either Bob Martin or Loraine Malloy, or visit our web site at www.misctp.com.

The day started out sunny and the day felt like a summer day should feel. Hot at times, breezes that gave relief and a temperature that was bear-able. It was July 4th and George Gilliam was prepared for the shooters.

The Doubles event saw George Gilliam take the outright championship with his nice 97. AA1 went to Bruce Christian and A1 went to Dave Ewers, B1 was won by Jane Carpenter; B2 by Tom Holton; and B3 by Ed Howe. C1 went to Christina Baning; C2 to Gene Swanson: and C3 to Richard Rine.

The 12 Gauge event brought two 100’s shot by Dave Ewers and George Gilliam. After their shoot-off it was Dave as Champ and George as AA1. Bruce Christian took AA2 with his 99. Sunday arrived just as beauti-ful as ever. What a glorious day to be on the Skeet Fields!!

The 28 Gauge shooters head-ed for the fields. No 100’s were to be found and once again the event was taken by a 99 shot by Doug Haines. AA1 went to Bruce Christian; A1 went to Ed Howe: A2 to Dave Ewers; A3 to Bob Refice. B1 was taken by Rich Trawinski; and B2 by Bob Edwards. C1 went to Christian Baning; C2 to Bob Heth; and C3 was Jim Moll. D1 went to Rich-ard Rine and D2 to Peter Martin.

As the squads headed out for the .410 event, the sun grew warmer. The .410 event brought a perfect score and a first 100 for Doug Haines! Congratulations Doug! The title of event champ went to Doug. AA1 went to Bruce Christian; AA2 to George Gilliam; and AA3 to Pete Pan-

August 2009 MSANews 27

Walled Lake, MI – As was the case last year, the decision was made Thursday morning to change the order of the guns, starting with the .410 and shoot “up the line”, since the weather forecast was better for Friday than Saturday. The idea behind changing the order is so the shooters will (hopefully) have the best conditions for the .410. No complaints were heard, as everyone was aware a change could be made, weather-de-pendent. The registration staff quickly updated the field assign-ments, and the shooters who had already signed-up were notified of the change. Thurs-day afternoon’s Doubles were conducted with puffy clouds and “breezy” conditions (a steady 20+ mph, with occasional gusts), foiling everyone’s ef-forts to break a perfect score. It was the first time anyone could remember there not being a 100 in the Doubles Event! How-ever, five individuals did man-age to emerge shy one. In the shoot-off, only Wayne Mayes (that’s a familiar name!) and John Herkowitz ran the first box, and on the 8th pair of box two, Herkowitz was able to hit the pair to claim the Champion-ship, with Mayes Runner-up; Jeff Moore, 3rd; Brandon Cade, AAA1 and Brent Edwards AA1. Lady Champion was Tiffany Davis, in a shoot-off over Trish Magyar, and class winners were Hunter Dzierbicki (A); Ken Staples (B) and Junior Champ; Mike Morrissey (C); and Mary Jo Birka, a “cross-over” shooter

from sporting clays, (D). It was readily apparent that

Al had made the right deci-sion to shoot the .410 first when Friday morning dawned with gray, hazy skies and virtually no wind. Surprisingly, only two shooters were able to take advantage of the near perfect conditions… L. P. Giambrone and Kevin Monteleone (a couple of more familiar names) headed to the shoot-off field. But, alas, they only went deep into the first station before L.P. bested Kevin. The shoot-off of 99s for Event 3rd proved a lot tougher, with Craig Parsons claiming the final spot on the podium and Aaron Benton AAA1. Marshall Steinbeck (AA); Trish Magyar

(A) and Lady Champ; John McGinnis, with a superb 98, (B); Brian Steinert (C) and Sharon Day (D) rounded out the class winners, with Austin Moskal the Junior Champ.

Saturday morning’s condi-tions were drastically different from Friday’s, with extremely windy conditions… As a result, only seven perfect scores were tallied in the 28 Gauge Event and only five in the 20 Gauge Event. The length of the shoot-offs (or brevity, more accurately) reflected just how tough the conditions were… the 28 Gauge Championship was claimed by Tiffany Davis (you go, girl!)

over the veteran George Lehr (I’m referring to your experience not your age, yet, George) in eight pair, with Robert Paxton, 3rd. Nick Van Lier was Junior Champion, and class winners were Brent Edwards (AAA), Jim Roussel (AA), Glenn Ulbrich (A), Aaron Johnson (B), Robert Cassidy (C) and Ken Fawcett (D). The 20 gauge shoot-off was even shorter, with all places decided in a mere five stations, with Aaron Benton Champion over Gary Lowe, Runner-up and Robert Paxton, 3rd. Trish Magyar was Lady Champion, and class winners were Sam Armstrong (AAA), Lehr (AA); Staples (A) and Junior Champ; Matt Bartosch (B); Craig Hin-termeister (D) and Scott Hamm (D).

After the shoot-offs, everyone lined-up for a fabulous dinner cooked by DGC’s own Chef Paul, assisted by Jessica and Janine, of grilled NY strip steaks cooked to order, with all the fix-ings. Thank you, Chef Paul, for a job well done (and rare steaks for those who wanted them)! Al Ange generously donated a custom leather shooting bag… everyone who was in Class A or lower in the 20 gauge had their name put into a drawing, and Ken Fawcett was the lucky the winner! and moderate winds. But, hey, it’s the 12 gauge, with lots of lead. No problem, right?! Un-fortunately, it was not so easy… Again, the number emerging unscathed only counted six. As the day wore on, the winds picked up from the west (be-hind the high house), just in time for the shoot-offs. First up, would be the HOA Champion-ship between Pat Byrne, a “first timer” at DGC from the other DGC (that would be Dallas) and L.P. tied with 397s. The program called for a regular round of skeet, miss and out by bird, then doubles at 3, 4 & 5. But, given the conditions, I think they would have preferred starting with doubles, as High 1 was the scariest target on the

field! Both Pat and L.P. ran the first round of singles, keeping the crowd on the edge of their seats as they both made some pretty spectacular shots. In the next round, the second time on station 4 going, Pat had a nasty pair, leaving the door open for L.P., which he took advantage of to become the 2009 Kolar Mo-tor State Open HOA Champion! With HOA Champion decided, the 100s from the 12 Gauge Event took to the field to battle it out… Thankfully it was the 12 gauge, and L.P. and Monteleone managed to clear the first box, leaving Marshall Steinbeck as 3rd. But, it only took two more pair for Monteleone to claim the Championship (this time) over

L.P. Class winners were Pat Byrne (AAA); Ellen Nelms (AA) and Lady Champion; Mary Al-ice DeFrancesco (A); Doug Kyle (B); Tom Robb (C); Linda Steen (D) and Scott Hamm (E).

With the 12 Gauge Event settled, it was back to determin-ing the remaining HOA places… Five 396s shot-off for Event Third, with Paxton besting Mon-teleone (AAA) and Benton (AA). Other class winners were Trish Magyar (A) in a shoot-off; John McGinnis (B), Dave Paterson (C) and Ken Fawcett (D). Tiffany Davis was Lady Champion. No shoot-offs were required to de-termine the HAA winners, with Pat Byrne, Champion, Craig Parsons (AAA); Brent Edwards (AA); Trish Magyar (A); John McGinnis (B); Roger Kasle (C); and Ken Fawcett (D).

With the shooting part of this report taken care of, it’s time to recognize the significant sup-port of countless individuals who have insured the continued success of the Kolar Motor State Open over the past ten years… Kolar Arm’s sponsorship has been instrumental in the success of the shoot. We can’t even be-gin to thank Don Mainland and John “Rags” Ramagli enough for their generosity and continued support. Thanks also go to De-troit Gun Club members Lauren Best, Mike Morrissey, Dave Nel-son and Mike Searle for making sure the Motor State Madness continued on; Scott Behnke and his Assistant Manager, Danny, did a fantastic job of throw-

ing the best possible targets in some challenging conditions; the back-loaders were stealth-like keeping the machines full and pads swept; and the crew of outstanding referees gave the shooters the targets when they called for them. Chef Paul, his kitchen staff (Jessica and Janine) and waitresses, Jenny and Shan-non, made sure that no one went hungry (or thirsty!); and Ann Hampton, as always, greeted the shooters with a cheery smile, and along with Debbie and Kathy, made sure the scores were promptly posted and the shoot-off sheets ready to go after the last shot was fired.

The overall “theme” of the Kolar Motor State Open over the years has been, “Too Much Fun” – as if such a thing were possi-ble! But everyone who has ever attended a Motor State Open will tell you, we do have fun, and I know that Dave Paterson,

who travelled all the way from Scotland, will attest to that. It isn’t about the winning (though that’s icing on the cake), it’s about the friends we make and have made and look forward to seeing every year at the shoot. We hope that those of you who haven’t experienced the hospi-tality of the Detroit Gun Club will do so next year. We can promise you that you will have “too much fun”!

The 11th anniversary of this event was held at the Flushing Michigan Club. The weather was great and the shooting bet-ter. George Gilliam always of-fers shooters an even opportuni-ty at the added cash and prizes. There was money for event winners and class winners. The days started at 65 degrees and reached 82-85 degrees by after-noon. Everyone was raring to get started and go after those targets.

The Doubles event was won by George Gilliam with a nice 96 and runner-up went to Robert Tripplehorn with Jovan Black-well taking AA1. Rich Curlett took A1; Dave Ewers took A2; and TomHolton took A3. Ed Howe took B1; John Hinternish B2; and Mike Baker took B3. Jim Schultz took C1; Roger Day took C2; and John Klida took C3. Alex King took D1; Tom Glowski took D2; and Richard Rine took D3.

The shoot-offs were many. We had a Rookie shoot-off and then headed upstairs to have dinner provided by George and Lynn Gilliam. Some showers began to fall but we headed upstairs. Following dinner came the Calcutta based on the 20 gauge rounds that had been shot on Saturday. When all the fun was done and with a few light showers, we headed back out to the field for the Scrap shoot. A special thanks to Lynn Gilliam for the great pies we had with dinner. They were great!! Folks hang around and visited and before you knew it the day was over.

Sunday awoke to a beautiful day and the 28 gauge event was underway. As beautiful as the day seemed to be there were no perfect scores. Frank Pantalena and Rich Curlett shot nice 98’s and after their shoot-off, Frank was Champion and Rich was runner-up. AA1 went to Bob O’Brien. George Gilliam took A1; John Hinternish took B1; Bob Edwards took C1; and Mi-chael Bregand took D1.

The 410 was the last gun shot and not a single perfect score could be found. George Gilliam took it outright with his 97 and Pete Pantalena took runner-up with 95 and AA1 was taken by Ed Howe. The other classes A-D were in the following order: Dave Ewers; Bob O’Brien; Mi-chael Bregand; and Jim Schultz.

by Rick Marsh

August 7 through 9, showed what Skeet shooters in Michigan will put up with; Twenty-four hours of continuous rain (over 2 inches), followed by 95-degree heat with 90 percent humidity. 33 Michigan Skeet Shooters said “Nothing to it” and kept pound-ing out the targets at Detroit Sportsmen’s Congress, produc-ing a few 100’s and a bunch of personal best scores.

Doubles started on Friday with very nice summer weather, about half the shooters made it out early to get those pesky doubles done. Saturday morn-ing the main group showed up amid a steady downpour and finished them up. How on earth Brent Edwards saw all 50 pairs is beyond me, but he did, tak-ing event champ with a perfect score. The rest of the pack fin-ished: Runner Up – Pete Pantal-ena, Event 3rd – Ross Szarenski, AA – Chester Kowalski, A- Rich Curlett, B- John Hinternish, C- John Klida and D – Bill (Willy) Crawford (shooting the 28 gauge)

The Rain continued through the 12 gauge event, and ap-parently felt fine to new skeet shooter Dan Swink all of 16 years old, shooting in Class E. He had shot a bit of Sporting Clays and some SCTP shoots, but otherwise was new to the Skeet World. Swink proceeded to win the 12 gauge Event outright with a fine 98. Dan pounded them out and bested the many experience shooters from AA on down! Runner-up

was Bob O’Brien after the 3-4-5 tiebreaker against Rich Gromek. Class shooters were: AA – Dave Ewers, A – Kowalski, B – Pete Pantalena, C – Gary Scheiwe (after a three way shoot off with Oliver Heth and Andrew Bieman), D – Rich Baker and E – Crawford

28 gauge continued with the now heavily rain soaked shoot-ers. Only the very last group out saw a touch of dryness. Brent Edwards was able to drop only one for event champ, and first year shooter Jim Van

Eaton was able to win his class through all the wetness. Run-ner-up was John Hinternish only 2 off the mark, Event 3rd went to Bob O’Brien after a fine shoot off with Kowalski. Class champs were: AA Kowalski, a – Gary Scheiwe B - Rick Marsh (fine shooting Rick!) C – Jim Dzieciolowski D - Jim Van Ea-ton.

As is usual with Michigan Skeet shooting, Sunday dawned perfectly dry; of course, the temps shot up to 95 degrees with near 100 % humidity. This made most shooters nearly as wet and damp as shooting in the rain the day before. Twenty gauge did produce a perfect score by Edwards, and Frank Pantalena was only one back for runner up. Event 3rd went to Chester Kowalski. 20 gauge Class champs were: AA – Bob O’Brien, A – George Innes, B Class – John Hinternish C Class – Tom Fudold.

At last, we came to the gun that separates the men from the boys, the fine 410. Of course, the wind by then had decided to pick up to make it a tad more interesting. Crawford took the event outright with his ever-present 410 (Willy shoots this in most ALL events!), Ewers was runner-up, after a battle with Skeet chair Pete Pantalena at the shoot-off. Class winners were A – Frank Pantalena, B – Bob O’Brien, C- Rick Trawinski D- Tom Fudold

HOA went quite obviously to Brent Edwards with a fine 386, and his HAA of 486. Bob

O’Brien was runner-up in HOA; Pete Pantalena took the HAA runner-up buckle.

After the shoot offs, we had great prizes from Briley, Wild Hare and Great Lakes Sporting Arms. This is a handicapped event of 3-4-5 doubles; winners were Steve Nelson on Saturday and Rick Marsh on Sunday. This is always a fun and interesting event of at least a couple of box-es and much hooting and cheer-ing. The weather gods treated us to dry weather for both events, that plus the great prizes from our fine sponsors make for a grand time.

None other than tiny gun shooter Willy Crawford won a special watch shoot sponsored by Cowboy Way gunsmithing, with a second by Pete Panta-lena for a Leatherman tool. This handicapped HAA event produces a bit of stress to keep you on your game. All 5-gun

shooters are entered at no extra charge, with the heavy handi-capping most anyone can win. We need to thank our local gun-smith and pro-shop manager Rick Stover for his contribution for this very exciting event.

With the fine office and fieldwork of Kristen Pantalena, Sharon and Jerry Barefoot, Rick Stover and Nelson Baker we had perfect targets, steady and fast record keeping and neat tidy fields. Because of Rick Trawins-ki’s fund raising skills, and Pete Pantalena’s relentless work and tireless patience with hundreds of questions we now have another fine shoot under the Detroit Sportsmen’s Congress belt. After the final shoot-offs, I noticed lots of smiling faces, some because they could finally dry off and others for the fine scores they produced. Come on back next spring for more great shooting at DSC.
