‘The Possession’ Narrative: In this movie trailer it shows

the equilibrium being the dad (Jeffery Dean Morgan) and the daughter (Natasha Cali's) laughing and enjoying themselves. Then they go shopping at what looks like a jumble sale of old items. Whilst at the stall the young girl spots an antique style box that appeals to her, once she has purchased the item with her father she takes the antique box home and when the box is opened it released some sort of mysterious curse on the young girl

Description:In this trailer the director/producer relates closely to the old fashioned ‘curses’ that have always been put upon someone if they have opened/touched something they shouldn’t have, which is unusual to modern day horror’s, this gives the movie some realism to it.

Also at the beginning the writer slowly introduces the cast by viewing at what is to them ‘normal/everyday life’ this provides some emotional connection between the characters and the viewers in just a short amount out time, with the young girl acting childlike, sweet and very happy for example in the part were she begins to dress up in clothes she finds at the sale and when she and her father is making puppet signs with there hands. These actions show just how much she changes throughout the trailer by after her opening the antique box she begins to act like something completely abnormal to her usual self.

Sound & Lighting:Sound: At the beginning of the trailer it features calm happy music, which then turns into a deeper sound but still the same rhythm which for the audience connotes that something is going to happen at that point in the trailer, linking In with the stereotypical conventions of a horror trailer it contains, deep humming like music when the recognition of disruption has been stated.

Lighting: the lighting featured in this movie includes dark dulls grey scale type lighting throughout the trailer, which brings a level of consistency throughout.

clothing/costumes: the dress codes the cast include warm clothing which features woollen hats and long sleeve shirts which are very casual, this connotes that she is possessed / cold hearted.

Setting: the setting of this trailer is all different places but mostly in the fathers home which is an older house but modernised inside which also adds to the effect of the conventional horror theme.

Camera shots of this trailer feature: Mid shots: Close ups- using depth of field technique Low angle shots High angle shots Over shoulder Long shots Medium close-ups Extreme close-ups Point of view shots

This shot shows the actors at an antique style roadside shop, in this shot it shows everything they sell at the antique shop which connotes to the audience that the shop sells lots of different types of products including cutlery and ornaments etc.

This shot is important to the film because it signifies a disruption. This is because its showing the young girl browsing the different products which the audience know she is about to make a very wrong decision which will effect her hugely which is later on shown throughout the film

Mid Shot

Close up using a depth of field technique

This shot is showing the young girl (main actress) in the same shot as the box which shows a lot of significance to the narrative of this film.

this shot shows the box and the girl in the same shot which connotes to the audience that the mysterious brown box is going to show a lot of significance in the film connecting both the actor and the prop together.

In this shot the producer has cleverly blurred out the young girl and is focusing on the box on her window seal which connotes to the audience that this prop is not an ordinary box

Birds eye over the shoulder shot, three shotThis shot is showing the mother and father working together suppressing her anger this shot shows significance in the film because the mother and father are divorced and this shot includes them working together in holding there possessed daughter down to get her help. This fits in with the narrative by resolving the disruption

This shot is interesting because it shows a Birdseye eye shot whilst an over the shoulder shot all in one which connotes to the audience that the girl is in an hospital bed because the camera is looking down on her giving the camera and the audience a ‘godlike’ effect.

This shot is conventional because it shows a sick or ill person being looked down on by the audience again giving the audience a god like feeling like a doctor would give to a patient

Description, Sound, Mise-en-scene & Lighting–Description: What's unique about this film is the fact that there is a love story included in this film whilst also being a Thriller/Horror which is unusual is modern day horrors, the trailer does include some moments that include suspense and make the viewers jump and feel shocked. This movie trailer is also very predictable that when it begins and characters saying in the trailer about how there was murders in the house the audience can predict that the girl that was responsible for the murders will appear and harm the main characters in some way.

Sound: throughout this movie trailer the music playing faster at the more intense parts, this builds the audiences expectations and also makes them aware that something bad is going to happen.

mise-en-scene: the dress codes is summer wear which includes vest tops, shirts and jeans which connotes being casual.

Lighting: the lighting throughout the trailer is dark and dull mostly, but at some parts its bright and cheery before the disruption is recognised.

Ratings/box office takings:This film made $31,096,918 at the box office

This film is rated 5.7/10 on the IMDB website from 5,028 users some of these reviews include:“Clearly, I can't say too much about it but the whole idea was really well crafted. The only reason why I'm not giving it a 10/10 is because there were a few moments that were a bit unrealistic. Overall though, it was a very tense and jumpy movie, Jennifer was great, and it had some really creepy imagery in it. I'd recommend it for lovers of 'Silent house‘”

“Don't think of House at the End of the Street as a slasher film. True, the story could work as a slasher, but director Mark Tonderai has created a film that rises above many of the usual genre clichés. The story is well-written and built around mystery and suspense rather than cheap shocks, and even though most of the main characters are teenagers, the film doesn't take them down the usual paths.”

Audiences of this film include ages 15-30 I think this because the storyline if quite complex and requires a mature understanding of what is going on.

This film features no censorship issues.

Description-The trailer for this movie is unusual, it shows a lot of the movie and what happens gives away a lot of clues about the movie so the audience no a lot about the film before they view it. Other movie trailers only give away a few details about the film not giving away the plot or clues about what happens in the film.

Sounds:At the beginning of the trailer it features fast cheerful music and it consistent until the audience begin to notice that ‘Esther’ is not so innocent (the part were she releases her anger in the toilet cubicle), at that point the music stops completely so the producer wants the audience to focus directly on the characters and what's happening. When the characters begin to relise what Esther is really like and the intense scenes of Esther being violent the music speeds up and get louder which is a very successful way of building up tension.

Near the end the sound of ticking is presented to the viewers which is connotation the fact that the characters are running out of time to stop Esther.

Non diegetic and diegetic sounds are played throughout the trailer such as the crashes and bangs when Esther explodes with anger, the squeaking of the park swings and the school bell. An example of diegetic sounds are car doors slamming and children laughing.

Lighting: the lighting of this movie is light almost not fitting into the conventional themes of a horror movie.

Ratings/ Box Office TakingsThis film made at the Box Office: $76,699,6632

Its rated 7.0 out of 10 from 70,650 0n IMDB some of the reviews includes:

“Finally, a horror film about adults. Adults with complex issues and children that act like children and not hyper precocious sex models. The reason to see this film isn't to find out the over advertised " Esther's secret" of the film (a MAJOR misstep in marketing. Too many people now enter the film trying to figure out the "secret" before they normally would have been surprised), but rather to see a well-acted (extremely well acted by Vera F.)slow-building suspense story with excellent direction and cinematography”

“Orphan REALLY surprised me. I expected some stupid pg-13 movie that somehow got an R rating. That was not the case. Let me tell you, Orphan is very disturbing at parts, and pretty gruesome. The movie overall is excellent, has some great acting, an amazing script, and excellent execution. The movie really has a lot of suspense and the twist is pulled off very well and packs a big punch to the viewer.”

This film is rated R in the united states and 15 in the UK it also features no censorship issues.
