8. For centuries, people had harmful infections that are today easily treated with antibiotics. An antibiotic is a substance produced by certain fungi, bacteria, and other organisms that can destroy other microorganisms. One antibiotic was discovered by accident by Alexander Fleming when he left bacteria out in his lab. When a mold accidentally infected the bacteria, Fleming saw that the bacteria in the area right around the mold had been destroyed. This led to the creation of penicillin as a medicine to destroy harmful bacteria in the body.

How did Fleming’s discovery of penicillin later help to save millions of lives around the world?

F. It made it easier for other scientists to grow mold cultures in their labs.

G. It provided a way to destroy the bacteria that the body could not fight off.

H. It provided doctors with a way to find the location of bacteria in the body.

J. It allowed people to choose the kind of bacteria that they wanted to destroy.

Bamboo Plants

Bamboo plants are some of the fastest growing plants in the world. Some can grow to more than 100 feet high. The stem, or stalk, of a bamboo plant is called a culm. Its underground root structure is called a rhizome. Bamboo plants reproduce when an underground rhizome turns upward and develops into a new culm, close to its parent plant. The bamboo plant is very hard on the outside, and the rhizomes hold it tightly in the ground.

Beach Erosion

Beaches are often damaged by wind and water erosion. Wind can sweep up sediment and carry it away, leaving bare land. Waves and currents can carry sand away from a shoreline and deposit it in another place or wash it out to sea.

Malcolm lives in a community that has beach erosion. The erosion may cause harm to the homes and businesses that have been built near the beach.

39. There is concern about the effect that overfishing is having on the population of tuna, swordfish, and other large fish in the ocean. An organization has come up with the following four suggestions on how to manage the fish population.

Suggestions for Preserving Fish Populations

Suggestion Description

Create fish farms

Control fishing

Increase the populationof the fish

Increase the amount offood for the fish

Build artificial environmentsinland to produce fish for food

Set limits as to the amount offish that can be caught and the

time of year fishing is done

Bring in fish from other placesto boost the population

Add nutrients to the water toattract more fish to the area

Which suggestion would conserve the fish in the ocean?

A. Creating fish farms would increase the number of fish worldwide.

B. Controlling fishing would help increase the existing fish population.

C. Introducing new fish would increase that particular fish population.

D. Increasing the amount of food would encourage fish migration.
