WHOOO NEWS The Scoop: What we are learning this week… Important Notes: April 15, 2013 Weekly Homework Reading Log: Please read at least 15 minutes every night. (Part of this time should be used on your child’s sight word ring.) Make sure your child records their reading on their reading log. This will be checked at the end of the month. Please make sure that all homework is completed in pencil Please remember that ALL homework is due every FRIDAY. This includes word study notebooks, book baggies, and math homework pages. Email [email protected] in order to let the front office know if your child is going to be absent. The first grade musical is on Tuesday, April 30. We will have two shows: 1:30 and 7:00. Ms. Wolfe’s Monday Memo April 2013 will make a litterbug and learn about how they can help to recycle and keep Lowes Island clean. Tuesday, April 16 th is Spring Picture Day. Please sign and return the3rd quarter report card envelopes as soon as possible. If you have any plastic bags, please send them in. This is part of the first grade team’s Earth Day community project. Scholastic book orders are due by April 28 th . Take a look at the wonderful selection they have! Word Study: Please have your child complete their word study homework and turn it in on Friday. In Literacy: This week in literacy we will read several books about Earth Day. While reading Michael Recycle and The Lorax we will discuss the author’s message or purpose. We will also work on comprehension of nonfiction texts while reading books Recycle and Recycle Everyday. As a class we will read the poem Have a Ball and focus on reading with appropriate fluency and expression. This week, in writing, we will work on writing about our imaginary gardens. Math Workbook: Please complete pages 105, 106, 107, and 108 in the math workbook. Rip out the pages, staple them together, and make sure your child’s name is on the packet. Turn this in on Friday. Recommended Reading: Recycle Our Earth Michael Recycle Recycle Everyday In Math: This week in math we will continue to practice counting money. Students will count, using the TouchPoints they’ve learned, a collection of quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies. Students will also work on choosing coins to make a given amount of money. In order to practice, students will play different money games with their classmates: Coin Concentration and Coin Go Fish. Please continue to practice these skills at home! In Content: This week we will discuss natural resources and conservation. Students will create a natural resources book and write about how they plan to protect them. Students will also create their own recycling superhero after we read the book Michael Recycle by Ellie Bethel. Finally, students
