WHY I’M HEREMs. Bowman's Educational Mission StatementMy goal as an educator is to inspire and empower each child to be a life-long learner. When teaching writing, I seek to reach my students where they are, inspire them to reach higher, and challenge them to go beyond where they ever thought they were capable of going. I strive to show each student where his/her strengths are as a reader and writer, and also show each student where he/she can improve to become even stronger. I want to celebrate my students' successes with them and provide the tools and support necessary to make sure they all have something to celebrate. When teaching, I desire to help my students discover the joy of reading and the craft of writing. I love hearing students share a well-crafted sentence they discovered while reading independently.

My goal as an educator is also to create mutually respectful relationships with all students and families regardless of race, gender, academic abilities, or disabilities. I am mindful to speak and deposit positively into the lives of the students entrusted to me each year. As an educator, I realize the responsibility placed on me as both an instructor and role model. I take that responsibility very seriously and teach each child the way I would want my children to be taught. My goal is to make sure my students and their families know that I care about them as students and as individuals.

When giving and grading assignments, I am conscientious to make sure that each assignment has purpose and value, to be fair and consistent when grading, and to provide feedback identifying both strengths and weaknesses. I identify the strengths to communicate what the student is doing well and should continue to do. I identify the weaknesses in the student's work to help the child make improvements and set new goals.

In relationships with my students and families, I strive to give my best in everything I do, to be considerate, humble, and honest. My values drive who I am as a person both in and out of the classroom. I seek to remind myself and inspire my students to remember that we live in a world with a population greater than one. I strive to empower and equip my students to go out and make a difference.

What is literary analysis?Literary analysis is a way to talk about literature. It is a way to understand literature better, so we can tell others about it.

In his preface to Boswell’s Life of Johnson, Charles Osgood states:

“Phillips Brooks once told the boys at Exeter that in reading a biography three men meet one another in close intimacy — the subject of the biography, the author, and the reader. Of the three, the most interesting is, of course, the man about whom the book is written. The most privileged is the reader, who is thus allowed to live familiarly with an eminent man. Least regarded of the three is the author. It is his part to introduce the others, and to develop between them an acquaintance, perhaps a friendship, while he, though ever busy and solicitous, withdraws into the background.” James Boswell, edited by Charles Osgood, The Life of Samuel Johnson (1917), preface.

Our task, likewise, is to bring the subject, the author, and the reader together. We presume to offer insights about different literature that will edify all three.
