attended. The MS Society Simcoe County
Chapter was the BEES charitable recipi-

more money yet to come; the final total
will be posted in the next newsletter. As
well, people attending were very generous
in donation at our donation boxes—we will
also have the totals on the donations for

MS Summer Camp Applications
Now Available
This summer the MS Society of Canada will
be offering a camp program with two age-
designated streams from August 13th-19th
2011. The younger camp is for children
and youth age 8-15 and will include choic-
es that suit every camper’s interests—from
sports, nature study, performing arts to
more traditional/ recreational activities like
canoeing and swimming. The campers will
go on an overnight canoe trip to near-by
Provincial Park on the Big Rideau Lake.
The second program is being designed for
older campers age 16-21. This program
will focus on leadership development,
learning self-sufficiency and self-
confidence while still enjoying the tradi-
tional camp activities. Campers will partici-
pate in an overnight canoe trip where they
will develop skills in leading a group, grow
in character and learn much more about
the value in community and helping oth-
ers. The camp is free to attend. All costs
associated with the camp (including travel)
are covered, thanks to a fifth year of gen-
erous funding from the RBC Foundation
and Fondation Bergeron-Jette.

Neurological disease
There are between 21,000 and 29,000 On-
tarians living with MS. Each of these indi-
viduals, as well as those waiting for a diag-
nosis, their families, friends, caregivers
and health providers can rely on the MS
Society to provide accurate information
about the disease, its symptoms and
symptom management or treatments.
They also look to us for information on re-
sources available through community or
government agencies.
Regarding the numbers mentioned above.
There is presently a Federal Study, an-
nounced in June of 2009. ―The four-year
national population study will provide key
information to improve current knowledge
about the prevalence, risk factors, use of
health services, economic cost, and impact
of neurological disease currently and pro-
jected over the next 20 years.‖ ―The feder-
al government will provide $15 million
over four years to fund the design and im-
plementation of the study, working closely
with neurological health stakeholders.‖
This study will have an effect on the num-
bers of persons with MS.

multiple sclerosis international feder-
ation world MS day News Release May
24, 2011
Employers are failing to make low cost
changes that would enable people
with MS to stay in work: new report
released for World MS Day
An international survey conducted by the
Multiple Sclerosis International Federation
(MSIF) has found that many employers are
slow to implement the low-cost changes to
their work environments that would enable
people with MS to stay in work longer.
To mark World MS Day 2011 (25 May),
MSIF surveyed employers worldwide about
work-based policies that could enable peo-
ple with MS and other chronic fluctuating
conditions to stay in work. The results are
released in a report entitled: Multiple scle-
rosis at work: an employer’s perspective.
A global survey of people with MS in 2009-
2010 found that of people who had left
work because of MS, 47% had left within
three years of diagnosis. It also found that
flexible working hours and a place to rest
were important adaptations that would
have enabled them to stay in work.
However, in this year’s follow-up survey of
companies, nearly 50% of those surveyed
said flexible working was not available in
their workplaces. In addition, 70% of sur-
vey respondents indicated that they had
no quiet place where people with MS, who
frequently suffer from fatigue, could rest
before resuming their duties. Less than
half of the respondents said that their of-
fice or place of work was wheelchair acces-
To coincide with World MS Day, MSIF is
calling on all employers to pledge to
make at least one significant change by
the end of 2011 that would enable people
with MS and other disabilities to stay in
employment.
Peer Banke, the CEO of MSIF said,‖ Peo-
ple with MS or other disabilities have
the right to work. Those rights are
outlined in the UN Convention on the
Rights of Persons with Disabilities
and backed up by legislation in many
countries. Our appeal to companies
and governments is to make those
rights real. Flexi-time, rest facilities
and some adjustments to the work-
place can go a long way to keeping
people with MS in work longer.‖
