MathsTwo Step Problems
This week we are continuing with 2 step problems. It is important to read these problems first. Decide whether you need to add or subtract. Always do what is in the brackets first. Get your child to estimate the answer first.
Busy at Maths p.161
Online Tutorial video (also uploaded on classdojo)http://data.cjfallon.ie/resources/19626/activity-161/index.html
This page introduces an alternative algorithm where the children are asked tosolve the problem in one column. They are first asked to estimate the expected answer by doing the sum using rounded numbers.Point to (a) at the top of the page. Ask your child to read the problem. Then ask the children questions, such as:
What are we asked to do first? (Yes, 24 + 53 = ?) Do we add or subtract this time? What does 24 round to? (Yes, 24 rounds down to 20.) What does 53 round to? (Yes, 53 rounds down to 50.) So, what is a rough estimate of the answer? (Yes, 20 + 50 = 70.) What are we asked to do next? (Yes, take away 46 from our answer.) What does 46 round to? (Yes, 46 rounds up to 50.) So, what is a rough estimate of the answer? (Yes, 70 – 50 = 20.) Now we can do the sum beside the estimate in one go rather than in
two.
Explain to the children that this is quicker and takes up less space than havingto do it as two separate sums.
Do the same with the other questions on this page.
Challenges: Point to the Challenges at the bottom of the page. In thesequestions, the children have to decide what operation must be carried outbefore inserting the correct operation sign/symbol.

As I Have Loved YouWatch the videos I have put on classdojo of the Story of the Twin Sisters. This week we are learning about the importance of showing God’s love to others. We are focusing on how loving others makes us feel good too.
PrayerLoving God, help us to show our love, for one another, and to treat other people as we would like to be treated. May we also show kindness and respect to one another. We ask this through Christ our Lord, Amen.
We are finished your Grow in Love pupil’s book, well done!
SESE (Science)Explore with me p.86 The Honey Bee This week we will be learning about the honey bee. You might have already read about it in English too. After this you will be able to list some facts about the honey bee. You will also be able to recognise and describe the parts of the honey bee.
There is an online slideshow available here https://2kmme93vd2739.379dn293jkid829238s93.explorewithme.ie/sc/resources/slideshow-captions-sc-10-5/
There is also a video uploaded to classdojo or you can watch it on this link:https://drive.google.com/file/d/10IL0XYy7OFTv26AgDh1G0zkPESy0G8hh/view?usp=sharing
Open your book on page 86. Read about the honey bee and write three interesting facts. Label the diagram of the honey bee.
Think Like a Scientist!
Where do honey bees live? Name the three types of bees found in a hive. What is the job of each
type? How do honey bees make honey? What do they use it for? What is a pollinator? How do bees help to pollinate flowers?
Ms Ní Mhurchú Second Class Work 08th- 12th of June
Name the parts of a honey bee.
Geography Explore with Me p.85 Investigating Soil
Today you will collect and investigate a soil sample/
Using a plastic bag/glass jar or plastic cup or bowl collect a soil sample from your garden.
Open the book on page 85 and complete investigation 1.
Investigation 2
1. You need to half fill a see through jar or container that has a lid with soil.
2. Then add water to the container and put the lid on securely.3. Shake the jar or cup gently.4. Allow the soil to settle.5. Observe and record.
Evaluate:What did you notice about your soil sample after it has settled?
Result:Draw the result.
Think like a Geographer!
Describe how your soil sample looks/feels/smells. List some living things that can be found in soil. What materials did you find in your soil sample?
FYIIn investigation 2 the soil should settle into different layers.
Any pebbles or stones will sink to the bottom. Sand will also sink to the bottom. Silt particles are smaller than sand and will settle on top of the sand
layer. Clay will settle on top of the silt. Above this you will see discoloured water. There may be organic material on top of the water which has not yet
Ms Ní Mhurchú Second Class Work 08th- 12th of June
decayed. The amount of sand, clay and silt in different types of soil is what
gives soil its different textures.
HistoryExplore with Me p. 84 Vincent Van Gogh
This week we will be listening to, discussing and retelling some facts about the life and work of Vincent Van Gogh.
There is an online slide show uploaded to classdojo or you can watch it on this link:https://drive.google.com/file/d/1hu6hypO7iqM6jwbFDFoY6N1wGREQIzN2/view?usp=sharing
Next go to page 84 of Explore with Me. Read about the life of Van Gogh, answer the questions and talk about the two paintings Starry Night and Sunflowers.
Think like an Historian!
Who was Vincent Van Gogh? Why is he famous? Can you name any of Van Gogh’s paintings? Tell me one thing you like
about it. How many paintings did Van Gogh sell when he was alive?
