Causes of the Civil War States Rights The states wanted to chose whether or not they were

free states or slave states, and not the government telling them.

Sectionalism Representatives were making decisions based on only what their region needs (South, North, East ,West) rather than the whole country.

Tariff The tariff used tax on imports from Europe which helped the north because most of the nations factories were located there. However, it

didn’t help the south because south had mostly agriculture.

Dred Scott, he was a slave and he asked the court for his freedom, and the court said no. Eventually he went to supreme court but they said he didn’t have any American rights. Many

people hoped Dred Scotts decision would make things better, but it made slavery worse.Fugitive Slave Law, Was passed to provide the return of escaped slaves. And to

Strategies of the Confederates

The war in the South* The confederates (or South) knew the land and could maneuver faster, hide better, could surprise attack, and surround smaller groups.Inspiration* The confederates looked for inspiration to the heroes of 1776 who had triumphed over greater odds than southerners faced in 1881.Concentrating Masses Against Fraction* First to maneuver to gain advantage of ground or numbers. They tried to make sure they had the largest number of soldiers on the battlefields. (Power in Numbers)

MAIN STRATAGIES OF THE SOUTH*o Whip as many Yankees as they could. This got the men motivated and ready to fight.o To mostly fight in the South This allowed them to maneuver trough the trees more easily. They thought that it would be better for them but instead they ended up getting deprived of their food and supplies.oTheir Offensive-Defensive Strategy This consisted of defending the Confederate homeland by using interior lines of communication (a Jominian but also common-sense concept) to concentrate dispersed forces against an invading army and, if opportunity offered, to go over to the offensive, even to the extent of invading the North.
