Family Interviews Today in Advisory classes students were given an assignment to interview a parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, or other relative in preparation for our Culture Week Advisory activity. This year Culture Week's theme is human migration. Tied to that theme, on February 2nd, Advisory classes will be creating a visual image of the group's shared experience in our country of immigrants. The interviews will not be collected or shared outside of the Advisory class. Students are free to share as much or as little as they are comfortable. However, before February 2nd we hope each student will have time to learn about the story of his/her family's arrival in Beaverton. Here are suggested questions for students to begin their family interview: 1. Where was I born? 2. Before immigrating to the United States, what countries or regions were our ancestors from? AND/OR “What Native American tribes or regions were our ancestors from?” 3. What was the first generation of our family that moved to the US? (for example me? Parents? Grandparents? Great-grandparents? Even earlier?) 4. What factors influenced our ancestors’ migration? (examples: escaping war or persecution, forced immigration, education or employment opportunities, following other family members) 5. What traditions or customs are followed in our family that immigrants brought with them? (for example holiday foods, names for grandparents, etc.) 6. Do we have anything physical that immigrants brought with them? (for example photos, keepsakes). Students are encouraged to bring these items or a photo of them to share with their Advisory classmates.

regiones o tribus americanas nativas vinieron nuestros antepasados?" 3. ¿Cuál fue la primera generación de nuestra familia que se mudó a los Estados Unidos? (por ejemplo, yo?

padres? abuelos? bisabuelos? incluso antes?) 4.

High School Boundary Adjustment Public Preview - January 21, 2016 The HS Boundary Adjustment Committee will share an initial boundary recommendation at a Public Preview on Thursday, Jan. 21st at Five Oaks MS from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. The purpose of the Public Preview is to allow parents and community members to see the initial recommendations in an informal setting similar to an open house, with the Committee taking public input. There will not be a formal presentation. It is expected that the Committee will further refine their recommendations based on this additional input. Written comment will also be accepted at this session. To view the initial boundary recommendation map, please visit the High School Boundary Adjustment Process webpage. The map is titled Revised Learning Map and linked with the January 7, 2016 meeting materials. For more information, please contact the Communications & Community Involvement Department at 503-356-4360. Informational Flyer AGS Math Evening Sessions For the last four years, Beaverton middle and high school math teachers have developed a series of math courses, aligned to higher state and national standards, to ensure students are prepared for high level math at the high school and college levels. In order for students to master all math standards in an appropriately progressive manner, Beaverton School District will be adjusting secondary math courses beginning with the 2016-2017 school year.

Within the new courses, all learning targets for Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II will be organized into a 3-year sequence that more closely aligns with Common Core State Standards and supports this learning progression. Anticipated results will be more students accessing college level material in high school and accelerated students being better prepared for credit bearing math courses in the first year of college. Southridge and Westview High Schools (grade 9), Health and Sciences School (grades 8 and 9) and Conestoga Middle School (grade 8) are currently implementing the first course in the sequence this school year. Those teaching the new course in these four schools have worked to align learning targets and design instructional units. A representative from each of the other secondary schools has participated on a design team with these teachers as well. Four parent informational sessions will be offered this winter to provide information on the new courses: • January 21st @ Stoller Middle School – 6:00-7:30 pm • January 28th @ Southridge High School – 6:00-7:30 pm • February 2nd @ Cedar Park Middle School – 6:00-7:30 pm • February 4th @ Highland Park Middle School – 6:00-7:30 pm We hope you will be able to join us for one of these sessions. Host Families Needed - March 6-18 We once again need 12 families to host our sister school Kosugi High School's delegation this year. They will arrive on Sunday, March 6th and depart on Friday, March 18th. The delegation is made up of 11 female students, 1 female teacher/chaperone, and 1 male teacher/chaperone (the latter will stay at a hotel near the school). Each family will be hosting one of the 11 female students or the female teacher/chaperone. If you are unable to host a student, please consider helping by: 1) Providing a ride to the male teacher/chaperone from the Comfort Inn on TV Highway to ISB in the mornings, or 2) Inviting the Kosugi HS male teacher/chaperone to your house for dinner or some other family event such as a party or a movie. The Kosugi HS students will shadow ISB students during their visit and will also spend time in Japanese classes. If your student rides the bus to/from school, we will provide them with special BSD bus passes so that they can ride your student's bus routes. Those families who are interested in hosting, please fill out the application form attached and submit it to Mrs. West via email ([email protected]) or bring it to the ISB main office. All adults 18 or older living in the host house must complete a BSD Background Check. The deadline to apply is February 1st. We appreciate your support! Do You Have Old Barbie-style Dolls? We are in need of old Barbie-style dolls for our 9th graders' "Barbie Bungee" physics lab. We need about 15 of them and they can be any Barbie character (Barbie, Ken, Skipper, etc.). If you have old Barbie dolls collecting dust at home, please consider sending them to school with your student. There is a box in the main office to collect them. Thank you for your support! 7th Grade Parents - Exclusion Day Feb. 17 Thank you to all the parents who responded to the letter you received informing you that your student was not up to date on immunizations. Please keep sending your student's Tdap immunization date to the ISB office as soon as he/she receives it so that we can keep our records current. If you did not receive a letter from the school, your student is up to date.

Students who are still not up to date with their immunizations in our computers will be excluded on February 17th, 2016. If your child has not had the Tdap shot, contact your child's health care provider, call Washington County Health Department at 503-846-8851 for an appointment, or visit the School-Based Health Center at Beaverton High School, see flyer attached. Lost & Found Everything that was found in 2015 will be donated to charity if it still remains in our Lost & Found on February 9, 2016. Due to the long winter break, we have kept some items since October to give you more than the usual 5 weeks to find them. Spend some moments really looking through Lost & Found to find your stuff. FRISB News We have great news! Due to fundraising that exceeded our expectations, (thanks to our generous ISB community!), the FRISB budget is showing a surplus of funds. At our January meeting, the FRISB board voted to amend the budget and use the additional funds to increase our spring grant funding. We want all available money to be used to enhance our students’ education at ISB! The amended budget will be voted on at the February 8th FRISB general meeting. The proposed budget is posted in the hall outside the office and on the FRISB webpage under the minutes for January 11th if you would like to look at it. We look forward to seeing interested parents at the February 8th meeting. Volunteer Opportunity at Our Park We're continuing the work of improving our adopted park, Melilah Park. Bring your friends and family and join with THPRD to do the rewarding work of restoring habitat. Please join us Saturday, January 23rd, from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. - Learn how to plant like the professionals! We will be planting mass quantities of bare root native trees and shrubs to increase the density of native plants throughout the natural areas. We will show volunteers how to plant for mass production, while maximizing the survival rate of the natives that we will install. Sign up online at: http://www.thprd.org/activities/nature/volunteer/park-improvement. Questions or concerns, contact Melissa Marcum, [email protected] or 503/629-6305 x2720. Keep Clipping those Box Tops Please keep bringing in those Box Tops! We've been able to raise $200 with Box Tops this year. Remind your family and friends to clip their Box Tops and donate them too! They may be worth just 10 cents each, but they add up quickly for our school!
