screening procedures concerning draft-age Japanese aliens and Japanese-American citizens during World War II, as administered by the Office of the Assistant Chief of Staff, G-2, and Office of the Provost Marshal General. Thenarrative, written by Arthur Brann Caldwell, supported by copies of numerous documents assembled at the time, is devoted primarily to the development of the War Department policy and directives concerning the program and its operation at the War Department level.
Final Report: Japanese Evacuation from the West Coast, 1942. File contains Lt. Gen. John L. DeWitt's final report on
the evacuation of persons of Japanese ancestry from cer-tain military areas in the Western Defense Command, concerning the considerations which led to evacuation and the mechanics by which it was accomplished. More specifically, the report traces the developments which led to Presidential Executive Order No. 9066, establishing military control over the Pacific Coast; presents a summary of the evacuation method, including a description of the military organization established to attain the evacuation as well as its operational technique; provides a narrative of Assembly Center operations regarding the residences for evacuees pending their transfer to Relocation Centers in the interior; notes the role of the Army in preparing semi-permanent facilities for evacuee relocation and subsequent evacuee transfer to these accommodations; offers a discussion of the collateral aspects of the program, such as curfew and travel control, public relations, inspection, and repatriation activities; and presents fiscal and statistical summaries as well as a series of photographs depicting the entire operation.

vances of American society, 1932-52, particularly progress made in civil rights. Includes two preliminary drafts of reports, one prepared by the personnel of the Civil Rights Section of the U.S. Justice Department, titled 11 Protection of the Rights of Individuals: A Brief History of the Protection of the Constitutional Rights of Individuals During the Last Twenty Years, 11 later incorporated into a pamphlet, Twenty Years of Teamwork, compiled from official sources by Clinton P. Anderson. Pamphlet is based on memoranda and statistics submitted by various governmental departments and agencies, a copy of which is included in the folder.

Little Rock from the date the U.S. Supreme Court ruled racial segregation in public schools unconstitutional through September, 1957, when, with the aid of Federal troops, integration was achieved at Central High School.

memoranda, arranged in chronological order, dated May to October, 1957, concerning matters related to segregation in the Little Rock public schools. Large-ly Arthur Brann Caldwell memos to Warren Olney, III, Assistant Attorney- General, Criminal Division, and Olney memos to the Attorney-General and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Memoranda concern: ABC report regarding the Little Rock school board plans for desegregation of Central High and possible action by the Justice Department; ABC conference with Orval Eugene Faubus August 28, 1957; telephone report from Assistant U.S. Attorney James E. Eisenhower and Orval Eugene Faubus concerning the integration of Little Rock's Central High School, including statements issued by Eisenhower and Faubus following their meeting in Newport, R.I., regarding compliance with Court orders in the desegregation of Little Rock high schools; Faubus 1 statement, released the day before Central High was to be integrated, pertaining to the mobilization of the National Guard; and a copy of Executive Order 10730 directing an end to the obstruction of justice in Little Rock and invoking certain provisions of the U.S. Code, which authorized the use of Federal troops to end such obstruction. Also included is the text of the President's address, delivered from his Wbite House office Sept. 24, 1957, concerning Executive Order 10730 and the situation in Little Rock.
