Principals Chat:
Dear Parents, Caregivers and Members of the College Community, Congratulations to all our students who were recognised in the Macedon Ranges Youth
Awards this week. The event was held by the Macedon Ranges Shire Council Youth
Development unit, at the Kyneton Town Hall. Many of our students were nominated for
both individual and group awards. Well done to the Interact Club on being awarded the
Outstanding Group Leadership Initiative; the Green Team on receiving the award for
Environmental Awareness and Alistair Hanson for being the Outstanding Business
Apprentice.
The opening of the Kyneton Daffodil and Arts Festival also launches the annual Macedon Ranges Rotary Youth Art
Awards. I have been advised that around 50 artworks created by students at KSC will be exhibited as part of this
event. I am looking forward to seeing the exhibition myself and encourage all of you to go to the Mechanics Institute
to support this event and our talented students.
We had a very successful day of parent-teacher meetings on Wednesday. It was an opportunity to see three-way
conversations between students, parents and teachers; all focused on the student’s progress in their learning. Our
fantastic parent support has been very evident over the past few weeks with excellent attendance at various parent
information evenings.
It is a big week coming up for our students in Years 8 and 9,
and to our Year 11 Outdoor Education students, as they
head off to their various camps. Our staff have worked hard
to ensure that our students can look forward to a safe and
active educational experience. Best wishes to all those
involved.
Kind Regards,
Ms Ana Rees Executive Principal Kyneton Secondary College
Congratulations to our Interact Club (pictured above) at the MRSC Youth awards last Wednesday.
Hello Kyneton Secondary Community!
I hope you are all staying warm as the end of term is
fast approaching… only 3 weeks to go! Year 12s are
coming to an end with their coursework and are
starting to think about exams… and stressing! It is
important to stay on top of things and stay
motivated
I would like to say a big congratulation to Alistair
Hanson for receiving the Outstanding Business
Apprentice award at the Macedon Ranges Youth
Awards, along with our fabulous and dedicated Green
Team receiving the Environmental Awareness award
and the Interact Club for the Outstanding Group
Leadership Initiative award. If you are interested in
joining any of these clubs, they meet fortnightly and
welcome all year levels! (Green team every second
Wednesday and Interact every second Friday).
Participating in these clubs is a great way to meet new
people from across different year levels, different
classes and to be involved in things that you otherwise
might not try. Some of the recent activities the groups
have undertaken are the birthing kit day held by Z-Club,
holding a raffle to raise money for the boxing gym and
the Vietnam project as the Interact Club have done or
working towards making our school more
environmentally aware with the Green Team. There are
many other things to do and take part in around the
school depending on your interests.
Keep in mind we are still looking for students wanting to
be part of our Relay for Life team and you can sign up
online on the Relay for Life webpage. The event will be
held on the 6th of October.
Lastly, if you have not already done so, the Student
Leadership team encourages all Kyneton Secondary
students to give us their opinions through the uniform
survey. This can be accessed through the following link:
https://survey.zohopublic.com/zs/sXB5k7 (remember this
is only for students).
We hope to give our peers a voice and so far, the
information we have received has been very helpful and
well received. In the future, we would like to release a
parent/community survey also regarding the uniform.
Bye for now!

Calculators
All students studying VCE Maths in Year 11 or Year 12 in
2018, will require a TI-nSpire CAS CX calculator. All
students in Years 8 – 10 require a scientific calculator.
The preferred calculator for Year 8 – 10 is the TIXB30
(green/white). Ordering instructions later in this edition.
These calculators are now available for purchase on-line
at www.schoolcalcs.com.au using school code kysc.
Orders will be taken until September 15 and calculators
delivered to the school before Sept 22.
It is recommended that students purchase these
calculators now, before the Semester 2 exams and in
preparation for 2018. A flyer with details on how to
purchase is available from Mrs Bird in the library.
Information Evening
Parents and students who attended the recent course
information evening will have heard about the
importance of Mathematics for future employment.
Employees will be more employable if they are good
problem solvers.
Therefore, I have included this little puzzle for your
consideration:
A certain type of water lily spread to double the area it
covers every year. Ten years after being planted in our
lake, these water lilies cover a quarter of its surface.
How many more years will it be before they cover the
entire surface of the lake?

Thank you to Sacred Heart who invited Kyneton Secondary College staff and students to attend a presentation by
Oliver James on Tuesday. Thank-you to Ms Bieshaar who took her year 9 student to learn more about Mr James and
his role as chief scientist behind movies like Interstellar, Mission Impossible, Harry Potter and many others. Staff and
students were impressed with Mr James’ science work and advice he gave to the movie creators - as was Stephen
Hawking who used the depictions of the Black Hole in his own lectures.

Libby Cannon an ex student, now student teacher, has set up a window pot herb garden with some year 9/10
Creative Cooking students. There are varieties of herbs in self-wicking pots which can be harvested at any time to
add colour and flavour to dishes in our kitchen.

ATAR Notes Exam Revision lecture series (FOR STUDENTS)
RMIT is partnering with ATAR Notes to provide a series of free lectures for VCE students.
The Exam Revision lecture series, running during the upcoming school holidays, will help students prepare for Unit 3
and 4 exams across a range of subjects. There are also a small number of sessions focusing on Units 1 and 2 in
selected studies
Lectures are delivered by current tertiary students and young professionals who achieved excellent results in these
subjects during their final year of high school.
Lectures are held at RMIT’s city campus, and tickets are very limited. These lectures always book out very quickly, so
please encourage your students to register soon if they wish to secure a place. Registrations can be made through
ATAR Notes’ Eventbrite page.

Last week our Business Manager, Tracey Madden attended a conference and went in the draw for a 3D printer. Tracey was the winner and through her generosity, the school now has a new 3D printer. This is excellent news, as
our current 3D printer is an early model that has almost reached its use by date. Well done and thank you Tracey!

On Saturday the 19th of August the Z-Club held a birthing kit assembly day where members from Z-Club, Zonta Club
of Kyneton,CWA and Interact club put together 400 birthing kits for women in developing countries who cannot get
the right medical attention while giving birth. The birthing kits consist of string to tie the umbilical cord, a scalpel,
gauze to wipe the baby’s eyes, soap, a pair of latex gloves and a sheet of plastic to give birth on.
We all started assembling the kits at 10am on Saturday morning and were finished by 12.30pm. Once we were
finished, everyone had a lovely morning tea that was supplied by members of the Z-Club-thank you girls! Thank you
to the volunteers who helped, we could not have completed all the birthing kits so quickly without you!
Each kit costs $3.00 and earlier in the year we had a sausage sizzle to raise the funds.
Our heartfelt thanks also to Peter Henderson (The Gas People), CWA and the Cairnes family who gave us donations
towards the cost of the kits.

SCHOOLS COMMEMORATE
ROYAL BIRTH
Monday morning’s birth of a son to Their Royal Highnesses the Duke of Edinburgh and Princess Elizabeth was
fittingly commemorated at all Kyneton and district schools on Tuesday morning prior to pupils dispersing for a
holiday.
The Kyneton High School’s commemoration, which took place on Monday afternoon, also impressively marked the
historic occasion. Gathered before a draped flag in the assembly hall, scholars listened to an interesting talk by the
headmaster (Mr. C. C. Fisher), the service concluding with the singing of the National Anthem and “Rule Britannia.”
