**All afternoon transportation changes must be in writing. Please do not email as I
may not see it before dismissal.
Our school day begins at 8:15. Students who are not in the room at 8:15 will be counted tardy. If your child
is absent, please fill out the online attendance form. Per CCS policy,
absence notes must be sent to the teacher within 2 days of the
absence.
This year we are continuing with the school wide PBIS behavior system. • Signature cards• Class stinger chart• Spirit Sticks• Quarterly Awards
We will also be using Class Dojo. Please make sure that you connect to your child’s account so that you can keep up with their daily behavior.
Standards Based Grading
Reading• Quick daily mini lesson to focus on a reading
strategy/skill then students work independently to practicing using the strategy.
• 5 Components (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension)
• Read 20 minutes nightly (80 minutes per week)
• Guided Reading Levels- students need to be a level Q by the end of the year

Word Study•Spelling inventory was given last week to place students in groups
•Words Their Way will start in October
•Words are taught through patterns
•Students will not be assigned homework for this.
Writing• Writer’s Workshop• Teach grammar and mechanics in
mini-lessons• Writing process• Students will collect ideas and write
personal and fictional narratives, informational, and persuasive pieces

Read to Achieve“In 2012, the North Carolina General
Assembly established the Read to Achieve Program (RtA) under the leadership of
Senate President Phil Berger. RtA is a K-3 comprehensive reading policy that focuses on improving early reading
development with the goal of all students reading on grade level by the end of third
grade.”

Homework will not be assigned on a regular basis this year. Homework will be assigned if students do not finish their work in class or if they need extra practice on a particular topic. There will also be several at home projects this year. Students should also be reading at home nightly!
