Graz, a very old city in the south-east of Austria – first mentioned as "gradec" (little fortress) in a document of 1128 – can look back on more than eight and a half centuries of eventful history. The old part of the city is the largest residentially used historical downtown area in Central Europe. Graz was Cultural Capital of Europe 2003.
