America in the Early 20th Century From Ellis Island to the Stock Market Crash (1892 – 1929)

Background: Was it the “best of times” or the “worst of times?” Those words, from Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities could aptly describe America at the dawn of a new century. Waves of immigrants arrived at Ellis Island in the East and Angel Island in the West, drawn to America in search of opportunity and freedom. At the dawn of the 20th century, American industry and manu-facturing boomed and new technologies created a powerful economy. World War I transformed the United States into a global power, and Americans united in a cause to “make the world safe for democracy.” Following the war, Americans wanted to forget the past and live in the present, creating the conditions for the “Roaring Twenties,” when the economy boomed, wealth was created, innovations improved the quality of life, women voted for the first time, and new music and art forms transformed the cultural landscape. Still, for many Americans, the early 20th century was indeed the “worst of times.” Immigrants, including young children, often worked in dan-gerous and low-paying jobs, lived in squalid tenements, and faced discrimi-nation from established Americans. African-Americans were subjected to strict segregation laws and the enduring impact of racism, which led to the rise of the Ku Klux Klan and a scourge of hate crimes. Fears of spies (and later communists) resulted in laws that limited freedoms and rights for groups of Americans. Prohibition, which banned the sale and manufacture of alcohol, sparked corruption and mob violence in the Twenties, a time period that also produced enormous gaps between wealthy and poor Americans, and ended with the Stock Market Crash in 1929.

Then you will conduct re-search, take notes, answer your compelling question, and, finally, create a movie using Microsoft Movie Maker. You will present your movie project to the class.

Requirements: You may work alone or with a partner. You must choose a topic that truly interests you and that you will be able to create a claim or main idea with details to support it within your movie. You must include an introduction, a middle (including 3 to 4 events or
