We read about the color yellow, sang a song about yellow and made a chart of the many things around us that are yellow. We even got to eat some yellow food like bananas, vanilla wafers and lemonade! YUM! K This is a hard working class! We’ve been in Kindergarten for 14 days!! We continued to work in our alphabet journal. I am introducing an upper and lower case letter each day and concentrating on letter recognition, sound and formation. Students are also learning a hand sign for each letter of the alphabet called Tucker Signing. It’s a strategy that helps build letter-sound associations. This week we learned Ff, Gg, Hh, Ii and Jj. Ask your child to show you the Tucker Sign for the letters they know so far. Math Topic A, Lesson 3 and 4 included classifying objects. Students had to analyze two similar objects. We compared many objects that were “the same, but ” and used our descriptive words to tell how they were the same and how they were different. Our math series includes a lot of student discussion. It’s exciting to see then articulate their thoughts. Sometimes it ‘clicks’ better when a peer is explaining in his or her own words. Ten Little Rubber Ducks and The Twelve Days of Kindergarten helped students become familiar with ordinal numbers. The class had to work together to put their own ducks in order. Each duck had an ordinal number and they had to find their correct position. We are movin’ in math!! Great online resources for kindergarten: Check out www.gonoodle.com. We use these brain breaks in class. Good times! www.starfall.com is a great site for practicing alphabet recognition and sounds. Two great apps for practicing handwriting skills are Writing Wizard and iWriteWords. You can download both from itunes. Have fun playing AND learning!
