Mr.. Z’s “Waves” Unit #2
Mr.. Z about to catch some “Air”
Mr.. Z’s “Riding One Home!”
Mrs. Z
Identify the two kinds of waves
Identify crests and troughs, compression and rarefaction
AIM: What are two types of Mechanical waves?
Longitudinal, transverse,
crest, trough, compression, rarefaction
AIM: What are two types of Mechanical Waves?
What is a wave?
The transfer of energy caused by a disturbance or a vibration
What is a Mechanical Wave?
Definition: a Wave which requires a medium
Do Electromagnetic Wave require a medium.
NO
There are three types of mechanical waves
Transverse *
Longitudinal *
Combinations or surface waves
* We are going to study these two types today
DRAW THIS IN YOUR NOTEBOOK
This is picture of a transverse wave
TRANSVERSE WAVES
EXAMPLE: “waves made with the rope”
EXAMPLE: “water waves”
DEMONSTRATE: When the wave moved in one direction, which way did the particles of the medium move? (Duck, Ribbon)
TRANSVERSE WAVES
DEFINITION:
The particles of the medium typically move perpendicular to the movement of the wave!
DRAW THIS IN YOUR NOTEBOOK
The highest point the waves reaches is called the crest.
The highest point the wave reaches is called the crest.
The lowest point is called the trough.
The lowest point is called the trough.

LONGITUTDINAL WAVES
“slinky waves” like the waves of a slinky (demonstrate)
*** SHOW Transparency 58: Longitudinal Wave
What is the other type of Mechanical Wave?
LONGITUTDINAL WAVES
Definition: the particles of the medium move parallel – or in the same direction – as the “movement of the wave”
DEMONSTRATE WITH A SLINKY
The area where the coils are compacted is called the COMPRESSION
The area where the coils are spread out is called the RAREFACTION
After the compression rarefaction pass, the medium (the slinky) returns to normal.
Where are the compressions?
Where are the compressions?
Where are the rarefactions?
Where are the rarefactions?
The crest of a transverse wave is similar to the compression of a
longitudinal wave

AIM: What are two wave Types?
The particles of an ocean wave actually move in a circular direction.
It’s the energy that is moving forward towards the beach -- not
water from far away!
