Mr Mittal visits ArcelorMittal South Africa ArcelorMittal Chairman and CEO, Mr Mittal, visited ArcelorMittal South Africa on 23 and 24 April to attend the business area review (BAR) meeting and discuss production results and plans with local management as well as participate in the Health and Safety Day. He was joined by Members of the Group Management Board and other senior management members from the Group: Gonzalo Urquijo (GMB member responsible for Africa, Asia and CIS (AACIS), Davinder Chugh (Senior Executive Vice President), Sudhir Maheshwari (GMB member), Marc Vereecke (Vice President and Chief Technology Officer with additional responsibility for In-House Manufacturing Services) and Daniel Janczak (VP of ArcelorMittal). The ArcelorMittal South Africa management team, headed by Nonkululeko Nyembezi- Heita presented an analysis of the business unit’s safety, financial and operational performance for the first quarter of 2012 as well as the objectives and challenges for the rest of the year. As always health and safety (H&S) was first and foremost on the agenda, with a comprehensive update on how ArcelorMittal South Africa has performed in the past few months. Of concern were the four fatalities and high number of LTI’s which occurred during 2011. ArcelorMittal South Africa was, however, commended for the significant efforts made to remedy this situation by reaching level three of the fatality prevention standards (FPS) with Newcastle Works and Saldanha Works even achieving a level five. Health and Safety Day

Since ArcelorMittal South Africa’s Health and Safety Day took place on Tuesday, 24 April Mr Mittal this year had the opportunity to attend the event. Due to the weather, Mr Mittal was unfortunately not able to fly to Newcastle to spend the day with Newcastle Works employees as planned. Instead he attended some of the activities at Vanderbijlpark Works. In his speech, opening the proceedings for the day, Mr Mittal stressed the importance of working safely and avoiding injuries and fatalities.

He shared some of his personal experiences with regard to fatal accidents in plants with the audience. In closing Mr Mittal requested everyone to adhere to the rules and to communicate safety hazards, dangers and unsafe conditions. He encouraged the Vanderbijlpark Works team to progress on their journey to zero accidents and wished them well in their endeavours to reach this target.

Shopfloor visit

After opening the Health & Safety Day, Mr Mittal took a tour of Vanderbijlpark Works’ Cold Rolling department joined by GMB members Gonzalo Urquijo and Marc Vereecke, ArcelorMittal South Africa CEO, Nonkululeko Nyembezi-Heita and COO, Hans Ludwig Rosenstock who is also currently acting general manager for Vanderbijlpark Works. Mr Mittal was taken through the Tandem North and CAPL by Albert Swanepoel, Works Manager Cold Rolling at Vanderbijlpark Works. Mr Mittal was impressed with the quality and approach developed for the Maintenance BI at Cold Rolling, remarking that it should be used as a benchmark for the site.
