WEEK 6DAY 2
Mr. Langton
10/13/2015
Do Now (Seriously though, 5 minutes)
Title: Organelles Pt. 2
Write in LT, BAME, Evidence, and How I can Improve
DO NOW:
A mystery cell has a cell wall. What additional
evidence would you need to determine if the cell
is prokaryotic or eukaryotic?
NORM
As a class, we will work towards this
We ask questions to help us understand
Agenda Do Now Book Keeping Organelle Function Organelle Structure Wrap Up
Book Keeping Classroom Policy Change
Study Sessions After School
Organelles
Defn: Structures within a cell that performs a specific function
Like tiny organs for a cell
Think of our cell as a factory
Organelle Function
Eukaryotic cell organelles (structure / function)
Plasma (cell) Membrane
Gate Keeper”
Physical & chemical boundary of all cells
A double layer called the phospholipid bilayer. It is selectively permeable (semipermeable) meaning only
certain things are let in and out
Control center of cell (controls all cellular activities)
Contains DNA
Contains nucleolus
Nucleus
Nucleolus
Located inside of the nucleus
Contains RNA and proteins
Makes ribosomes
Nuclear membrane/ Nuclear envelope Double-layered
membrane enclosing the nucleus of a cell.
Ribosomes Sites of protein synthesis
Proteins are the main product produced by the cell
Not considered a membrane-bound organelle
Found in prokaryotes and eukaryotes
Endoplasmic Reticulum Helps move substances within cells
Network of interconnected membranes
Two typesRough endoplasmic reticulumSmooth endoplasmic reticulum
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum Ribosomes attached to surface
Manufacture proteinsNot all ribosomes attached to rough ER
May modify proteins from ribosomes
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum No attached ribosomes Has enzymes that help build molecules
CarbohydratesLipids
Golgi Apparatus Involved in packaging and secretion of proteins
The cellular post office
Also called golgi body
Mitochondria Where energy for the cell is made (ATP) Site of cellular respiration
Lysosomes Found in animal cells
Digest and recycle worn out cell partsDestroy foreign invaders
Plant cell only Large vacuoles for storage of
water and sugars
Cell wall made of cellulose for support and protection
ChloroplastsWhere photosynthesis happens
(glucose is made from water, CO2, & sunlight)
Filled with chlorophyll, which gives green color
Cytoplasm Viscous fluid containing organelles
Components of cytoplasmInterconnected filaments & fibers Fluid = cytosolOrganelles
Cytoskeleton Made of 3 fiber types
MicrofilamentsMicrotubulesIntermediate filaments
3 functions: mechanical support anchor organelles help move substances
Cilia & Flagella Provide motility
Cilia Short, hair-like
extensions
Flagella Whip-like extensions
Centrioles Pairs of microtubular structures Play a role in cell division
Matching Organelle to its Function
Working with your elbow partner
Cut out the Functions and Memory Items
Match the function and memory item with the correct organelle
You BOTH must agree before you glue them on
We ask questions to understand Think about the learning targets we have
investigated
What questions do you have?
Should I address these in class?
Should I address these afterschool?
Self-Assess LT (5 minutes)
B A M EI have little to
no understanding of the learning
target.
I have some understanding of the learning
target.
I have a solid understanding of the learning
target.
I have a solid understanding of the learning
target and I am able to
help my peers have a solid
understanding
