PURPOSE:To encourage boys and girls to step out of their comfortzone and participate in a program in front of a large audi-ence; to gain self confidence and composure; to be theirbest selves in front of an audience; and to gain experiencein speaking in front of a large audience. The winner(s) willrepresent Nichols-Lawson Middle School. Proceeds fromthe program will go toward the schools' boys and girls bas-ketball program and for scholarship opportunities.

WINNERS:Three semi-finalists in both the boys and girls divisionswill be selected from each grade. From those 18 semi-finalists (nine boys and nine girls), grade winners (SixthGrade, Seventh Grade, Eighth Grade) will be chosenand then there will be an overall Mr. and Miss Nichols-Lawson Middle School. The overall winner (boy and girl)can be from any grade. Each grade winner and overall win-ner will receive a tiara/crown. EVERY CONTESTANT ISA WINNER. This program is not intended to validatea child's self worth – all contestants are all God's childrenand are special and unique. You may or may not agreewith whom the judges select; however, we encourageparents to take advantage of this opportunity to teachyour child valuable life lessons . . . sometimes we achievesuccess on our first attempt, and sometimes it is notGod's will and we must continue trying and never giveup on the goal. On any given day with the same con-testants and the same panel of judges – the outcomecould be completely different. This program is designedto build children up, and that is our sole intention. Weare confident that each child will walk away from thisevent with more self-confidence, greater self-awareness,and an increased appreciation for their own individual-ity.

JUDGING:The Miss Talladega County Scholarship Organization isa franchise of the Miss Alabama and Miss America Pag-eants; therefore, our commitment to each contestant isthat this pageant will be conducted with the higheststandards of conduct and integrity. Judging will be con-ducted fairly and objectively. All judges will be fromout-of-town no judge will have any knowledge of anycontestant until they arrive for the program. Judgingwill be based on overall first impression, age appropri-ateness, beauty or handsomeness, stage presence, per-sonality, composure and poise, appropriateness of the

attire, and response to onstage question. The onstagequestion will come from the application the contestantsubmits and should not be challenging. THE JUDGESDECISION WILL BE FINAL. Scoresheets will NOTbe shared with anyone but are shredded immediatelyafter the announcements are made. It is not the judges'job to critique contestants.

APPLICATION DEADLINE:All applications must be received by Wednesday, March28. Applications will be obtained by the Miss TalladegaCounty Scholarship Organization and processed. Ap-plications must be completely filled out and readableand must have a $20.00 entry fee attached. AB-SOLUTELY NO LATE APPLICATIONS WILL BEACCEPTED.

ENTRY FEE:There is a $20 entry fee for each contestant. Checksmust be made payable to the Miss Talladega CountyPageant. Entry fees are tax deductible as they will assisttwo non-profit organizations. Proceeds from the pag-eant will go towards the Nichols-Lawson Middle Schoolboys and girls basketball program and scholarships forthe Miss Talladega County Pageant. In the event a con-testant does not show for the event, no entry fee refundswill be offered without a physician statement.

REHEARSAL:A mandatory rehearsal will be held after lunch on Thursday,April 12, after school. Students who do not participate in therehearsal will be disqualified. The rehearsal will conclude at5:30 p.m.

CONTESTANT ARRIVAL:Contestants should arrive at Nichols-Lawson MiddleSchool cafeteria between 6:00 and 6:30 p.m. Contetantsshould arrive READY for stage. NO ONE MAYENTER THE CAFETERIA EXCEPT THE CON-TESTANT. Pageant volunteers will be there to assistthem. Food and/or beverages will not be allowed in thelunchroom or backstage. Our volunteers will line thecontestants up and escort them to the gymnatorium atthe appropriate time. Parents should return to the cafe-teria to pick up their child after the program.

PAGEANT ADMISSION:Admission to the pageant will be $5 per person, regardlessof age. There will be no complimentary/free admissions.

ATTIRE:GIRLS: Girls may wear an appropriate evening gownor Sunday or pageant dress. Contestants will be judgedon how they carry themselves in their dress - NOT THEVALUE OF THE DRESS. This is a pageant and girlsshould look appropriate for your age; otherwise, judgeswill take off points if a contestant is 13 and looks 18.Contestants should strive to look natural. Prom-typehairstyles are NOT appropriate. Hair pieces/wigs arenot acceptable. Up-do hairstyles do not look natural forthis age group. Appropriate make-up is acceptable. BOYS: Boys are encouraged to wear a suit and tie ordressy/casual Sunday-type clothing. Boys should dressappropriately for being judged.NOTE: Parents are encouraged NOT to spend unnec-essary funds on wardrobe or hair. Students will not beallowed to check-out to have hair or make-up done – re-hearsal will be the day of the pageant.

TALENT COMPETITION:A talent competition will be held immediately after theonstage competition and is completely optional. A $25.00entry fee is required for contestants choosing to participatein talent. Contestants do not have to participate in bothand one event has nothing to do with the other. Talentwill be limited individual performances (no groups) com-prised of no more than two minutes in length. Contest-ants may choose to perform a vocal, instrumental, dance,recitation, dramatic monologue, etc. Props will not be al-lowed. All performances must be memorized – sheetmusic will not be allowed. Acts must be tasteful and ap-propriate and conducive for Nichols-Lawson MiddleSchool stage. A mandatory talent rehearsal will be heldon Thursday evening, November 29, at 5:30 p.m., for in-dividuals who participate in talent. Talent rehearsal willconclude by 6:30 p.m. Complete the enclosed form andreturn to Miss Looney with the talent entry fee and CDof your music by Friday, November 9. Music must be cutto no more than two minutes and the CD may not con-tain any other recording. Label the CD with the contest-ant name and the title of the music.

PHOTOGRAPHY/VIDEOGRAPHY:No flash photography will be allowed. No videographywill be allowed. The Miss Talladega County Pageant of-ficial photographer, Don Smith's Home of Photography,will be set-up in the lunchroom and will take photo-graphs – an order form will be provided.

The inaugural Mr. and Miss Nichols-Lawson Middle School Pageant will be held on Friday, November 30, atthe Nichols-Lawson Middle School gymnatorium, at 7:00 p.m. The program is being produced/directed by theMiss Talladega County Scholarship Organization in conjunction with Nichols-Lawson Middle School. We en-courage all students to consider participating. In order to participate, you must return the attached applicationand $20.00 entry fee to Miss Tyler Looney, faculty member, by Friday, November 9. No late entries will be ac-cepted.
