4 2016 MPRA Conference | www.mopark.org

Greetings,It is our pleasure on behalf of the City of Columbia to bid a warm welcome to the 2016 MPRA Conference delegates, speakers, exhibitors and students. It is a privilege to have you as our guests.

Columbia is the site of earliest beginnings of our state association and 2016 also marks the 50th anniversary of MU’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism.

On November 20, 1959, the Missouri Recreation Association and the Missouri Recreation and Park Society merged forming the Missouri Park and Recreation Association (MPRA). The association’s first office was located in the University of Missouri’s Clark Hall adjacent to MU’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism.

The University of Missouri’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism began in the School of Social and Community Services in 1966. In 1969, the department was selected as one of three pilot programs for National Recreation and Park Association accreditation, receiving full accreditation in 1977. Mizzou PRT department has been continuously accredited since that time. Please join us in congratulating all students, professors, and alumni as we celebrate 50 exceptional years.

Over the next few days, you will experience the best our association has to offer - tours, educational sessions and outstanding social activities.

We extend a warm greeting to those who have made attending the MPRA conference an annual tradition. Joining us for the first time? You will find this conference a welcoming place to forge new professional and personal relationships.

We hope that you find your time in Columbia a rewarding experience. Although there is a full agenda, please explore our lively city and its hospitality. Columbia features great restaurants, art galleries, boutiques, and of course, numerous top-notch parks, facilities, and trails. We hope you will return to visit us again soon.

This event would not have been possible without the hard work and commitment of the staff of the MPRA office, the MU Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism, and the staff of the Columbia Parks and Recreation Department. Our deep appreciation goes to them for developing a program rich in content, and bringing together practitioner and scholarly perspectives in over 78 educational sessions.

Above all, thank you for your dedication and service to your respective communities.

Sincerely,

Kirsten Barnes Mike Griggs & Dr. David Vaught MPRA President 2016 MPRA Conference Co-Chairs
