Wisden India Almanack Cricketer of the Year 2019

• Indian Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah and batswoman Smriti Mandhana won the Wisden India Almanack Cricketer of the Year award.

• The other 3 winners are Pakistan's Fakhar Zairian, Sri Lanka's Dimuth Karunaratne and Afghanistan's Rashid Khan.

• Smriti Mandhana became the third woman to win 'Cricketer of the Year', after Mithali Raj and Deepti Sharma.

• Former Indian cricketers Gundappa Viswanath and Lala Amarnath were inducted into the Wisden India Hall of Fame.

• The book titled "Cricket Country: The Untold History of the First All India Team" by Prashant Kidambi was adjudged the Wisden India Book of the Year 2019 (Published by Penguin India).

Vijay Hazare Trophy 2019-20

• Karnataka has won the 2019-20 Vijay Hazare Trophy. Karnataka defeated Tamil Nadu by 9 wickets in the finals of Vijay Hazare Trophy at Bengaluru.

• Karnataka won their 4th Vijay Hazare Trophy title with a dominant display against Tamil Nadu.

• Abhimanyu Mithun took a hat-trick in the summit clash.

Most decorated gymnast in World Championships

• Simone Biles of USA became the most decorated gymnast in the world championships' history on October 13, 2019 with a gold medal on the balance beam in Stuttgart, Germany.

• She won her 25th career world medal at the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships, surpassing Belarusian Vitaly Scherbo's career total of 23.22 years old Biles took home five of the six golds to be won in Stuttgart, Germany, winning the top of the podium in team competition, all-around, and vault in addition to floor and beam.

First Indian to play 100 T20Is

• Harmanpreet Kaur has become the 1st Indian to play 100 T20 International matches.

• She has joined the club of 10 female players who have reached the three figure mark in terms of appearances.

• New Zealand's Suzie Bates and Australia's Ellyse Perry are on top of the list with 111 appearances.

• Harmanpreet Kaur has 2 more appearances in T20's than MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma, who have played the highest number of matches for India in men's cricket.

Asian Body Building Sports Championship 2019

• Maj Abdul Quadir Khan of the Corps of Signals brought laurels to India by winning a Silver Medal at the prestigious 53rd Asian Body Building & Physique Sports Championship held at Batam Indonesia in Oct 19.

• He participated in the Indian Body Building Federation (IBBF) selection trials held at Khammam, Telangana in July 2019 and got selected to represent India. This was his maiden event.

Fit India Plog Run

• Union Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju on October 2, 2019 flagged off `Fit India Plog’ run at Indira Gandhi stadium in New Delhi to mark Gandhi Jayanti.

• Plogging is a concept brings together fitness and cleanliness as participants pick up plastic and other waste from the road while jogging.

• The run is being organised at over two thousand places all over the country including 225 places in the national capital.

• Nehru Yuva Kendras, NSS centers and government and private institutions across the country are also organising the Plog Run to ensure that fitness and cleanliness become a way of life for people.

India's first floating basketball court

• National Basketball Association (NBA) brought to India the first-ever Floating Basketball Court in the Arabian Sea in Mumbai, Maharashtra. NBA India on December 20, 2018, had announced that the first-ever NBA game in the country would be organized on October 4 and 5, 2019in Mumbai.

SAFF U-18 football C'ship 2019

• On September 29, 2019, India won the 3rd edition of South Asian Football Federation Under-18 (SAFF U-18) football championship 2019 title for the first time by defeating Bangladesh in the finals held in the host country Nepal, in Kathmandu's Halchowk Stadium.

• India's Vikram Partap Singh and Ravi Bahadur Rana, each scored a goal to make up to the maiden championship title by defeating Bangladesh for 2-1.

• India's Ninthoinganba Meetei is adjudged as the most valuable player (MVP) of the tournament.

• Fair play award was given to team Bhutan.

• The most successful nation in winning the SAFF U-18 championship multiple times was Nepal (2 times) Recently in the 2019 SAFF Women's Championship held in March 2019, Indian women's team emerged as the champions by defeating Nepal.

Op-Blue Freedom

• Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju and former India football captain Baichung Bhutia flagged off the Delhi leg of Op-Blue Freedom on August 21, 2019.

• After the success of the Chandigarh leg, the group of eight veterans, including from the elite special forces of PARA regiment and MARCO, dived at SPM Swimming Pool Complex in Delhi.

• Op-Blue Freedom is an initiative in which a group of armed forces veterans train sports enthusiasts in survival training and self-defense.

• It is a nation-wide adaptive scuba diving programme for people with disabilities as well as the able bodied.

• The program aims to train adventure enthusiasts in special forces skills like survival techniques, emergency first response skills, unarmed combat, endurance and fitness.

Basketball World Cup

• Spain defeated Argentina by 95-75 to win the Basketball World Cup held in Beijing, China.

• This was its second title win after 13 years. The next world cup will held in 2023 in Japan, Indonesia and the Philippines.

• Spain had won the title last time in 2006 with a 70-47 win over Greece.

• With 32 teams, this was the biggest Basketball World Cup ever.

First woman to claim two hat-tricks in white-ball cricket

• Australian fast bowler Megan Schutt scripted history by becoming the first woman to claim two hat-tricks in white-ball cricket.

• The right-arm medium-pacer claimed an ODI hat-trick to become the first Australian woman to achieve the feat.

• She became the first Australian women to claim a hat-trick in ODIs.

• Schutt had claimed her first hat-trick in a T20 game against India.

Asia Pacific Golf Hall of Fame 2019

• Managing Director and Chairman of Hero MotoCorp, Pawan Munjal will be inducted into the 2019 Asia Pacific Golf Hall of Fame.

• He will be inducted for his support to "Golf" in India and around the world.

• The induction ceremony will be held at the 2019 Asian Golf Awards Gala Banquet.

• With the honour, he will join the legendary players such as Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and other leading personalities such as David Chu who were bestowed with the highest honour in the Asia Pacific golf industry.

Duleep Trophy Title 2019

• India Red beat India Green by an innings and 38 runs to clinch the Duleep Trophy title at Bengaluru.

• India Red had scored 388 in their first innings. On the other hand, India Green compiled 231 runs in their first innings and 119 in their second innings.

• Abhimanyu Eswaran, who made a brilliant 153 for India Red, was named player of the match.

Yashaswini Deswal wins gold at ISSF World Cup

• Indian shooter Yashaswini Singh Deswal won gold in the women's lOmeter Air Pistol event at the ISSF World Cup at Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. she has also secured an Olympic quota for India. This is India's 9th quota in shooting for 2020 Tokyo Games.

PV Sindhu becomes first Indian to win World Championships gold

• Ace Indian shunter PV Sindhu has won the World Championships title defeating Japan's Nozomi Okuhara in the final at Basel, Switzerland.

• Sindhu defeated her Japanese opponent Nozomi Okuhara to 21-7, 21-7. This was Sindhu's third straight World Championships final.

• With this victory, the 24-year-old shuttler has become the first Indian to book a gold medal at the World Championships.

3rd Indian to register a hat trick in Test cricket

• Indian pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah has become the third Indian to register a hat-trick in Test cricket.

• He took 3 wickets in 3 successive balls in the 2nd test against West Indies, held in Kingston, Jamaica.

• He dismissed Darren Bravo, Shamarh Brooks and Roston Chase to claim the hat trick.

• This was the third test hat-trick by an Indian bowler after Harbhajan Singh and Irfan Pathan.

SAFF Under-15 title

• A convincing India U-15 team thrashed Nepal 7-0 to lift the SAFF U-15 title at the Kalyani Stadium in Kolkata.

• Striker Sridarth Nongmeikapam scored a hat-trick while Maheson Singh, Amandeep, Sibajit Singh and Himanshu Jangra scored one goal apiece.

• The victory also meant that India is now the most successful team in the tournament's history.

• They won the title for a record third time after previous wins in 2013 and 2017, both of which came in Nepal.

Highest paid women in sports list 2019

• 23-time Grand Slam singles winner and American tennis superstar Serena Williams tops the highest-paid women sports list 2019 for the 4th straight year released by Forbes magazine with earnings 529.2million.

• Japan's Naomi Osaka who is currently standing second in the list with earnings of $24.3 million, became the fourth woman to earn more than $20million after Serana Williams, Russia's Maria Sharapova and China's Li Na.

• Indian badminton player PV Sindhu (13th) and Thai golfer Ariya Jutanugarn were the non-tennis players in the top 15 rankings.

Junior Track Cycling World Championships 2019

• Cyclists Esow Albeit, Ronaldo Singh and Rojit Singh of India won the first cycling gold by defeating Australiain men's team sprint event at UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale) Junior Track Cycling World Championships 2019 held in Frankfurt, Germany.

• Bronze was won by Great Britain. The event was held from August 14-18, 2019. The women's team of Triyasha and Nikita finished 5th in the women's team sprint event. 2020 UCI Junior Track Cycling World Championships held in Cairo, Egypt.

UEFA Super Cup 2019

• On August 15, 2019, Football club, Liverpool produced their best to win the 44th UEFA Super Cup 2019 by beating Chelsea with 5-4 on penalties at the Vodafone Park, Istanbul, Turkey.

• The match was the first all-English UEFA (Union of European Football Associations) Super Cup & it was Liverpool's 4th Super Cup victory with the previous victories in the year of 2005, 2001& 19

Three new sports including in the CWG 2022 The Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2022 which is to be held in Birmingham, England will be the first major multi-sport event to give additional spot to women's medal thus making more Women's medal than men's medal. A The medal classification are- 135 medals for women and 133 medals for men. The three newly added sports are :

• Women's T20 (twenty-twenty) cricket.

• Beach volleyball and

• Para-table tennis

First Indian woman to win FIM Bajas World Cup 2019

• 23-year-old Indian motorsport rider, Aishwarya Pissay from Bengaluru became the first woman from India as well as the first Indian to win the FIM (Federation Internationale de Motocyclisme) Bajas World cup 2019 with a tally of 65 points.

• Aishwarya Pissay also finished second in the FIM junior category with 46 points. She was the only one to compete for all the four rounds over her rivals and represented TVS (Thiruklcunmgudi vengaram Sundaram) motors. She finished 4th in the final level of the 2019 Bajas world cup to win the championship-leading with four points.

• A total of 5 participants competed in the 2019 FIM Bajas World cup with Portugal's Rita Vieira (61 points) finishing in the second spot.

Women's Singles Rankings in Badminton

• In the recently released women's singles ranking by Badminton World Federation, India's star players PV Sindhu and Saina Nehwal have retained 5th spot and 8th spot respectively. The ranking is topped by Japan's Akane Yamaguchi.

• Chinese Taipei's Tai Tzu Ying was overtaken by Akane Yamaguchi to become the new world no. I champion.

• Japan's Nozomi Okuhara is ranked second and Tai Tzu Ymg is ranked third in the BWF rankings.

• In BWF men's ranking Japan's Kento Momota is ranked first whereas India's Kidambi Srikanth and Sameer Verma are ranked 10th and 13th respectively.

ICC World Cup 2019

• The ICC Men's World Cup 2019 was the 12th Cricket World Cup held in England and Wales from 30 May to 14 July 2019. It was administered by International Cricket Council (ICC).

• The cricket format was One Day Internationals (ODIs). 10 teams participated in the cricket tournament with a total of 48 matches played between the teams.

• The Finals were held at the Lord's Cricket Ground between New Zealand and England.

• England lifted the first World Cup title beating New Zealand on boundary count after both the match and the subsequent Super Over finished as ties.

• Kane Williamson : Runners-up captain

• Kane Stuart Williamson of New Zealand was named as the Player of the Tournament with 578 runs who received the award from Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar.

• Stokes of England was awarded the Man of the Match.

Most wickets

• With record-shattering 27 wickets, Australian left-arm pacer Mitchell Stare topped the table of wicket-takers.

• He also bagged two four-wicket and two five-wicket hauls in just 10 games.

Most runs

• Rohit Sharma scored 648 runs from the nine games at an average of 81 including 67 fours and 14 sixes.

• David Warner followed Sharma in the second position with 647 runs and Shakib Al Hasan stood third in the list of tournament's leading run scorers.

Highlights of ICC Men's World Cup-2019

• ICC had released its official song 'Stand By'.

• The ICC launched the Crib Campaign on the eve of the Men's World Cup 2019. It brought together 460 million people who play cricket globally to celebrate the magnificent diversity of cricket.

Records created at ICC Men's World Cup 2019

MS Dhonl

• Mahendra Singh Dhoni of India became the first wicket-keeper to keep wickets in 600 international innings during the opening match against South Africa.

• He held another record of Most Dismissals (33) in World Cup behind Kumar Sangakkara of Sri Lanka (54) and Adam Gilchrist of Australia (52).

• He has 139 list A stumpings to his name equaling the record of Pakistan’s Moin Khan during the same match.

• He became the second Indian cricketer after Sachin Tendulkar to play 350 ODIs.

Virat Kohli

• Virat Kohli of India became the fastest Asian to win 50 ODIs as captain in 69 matches.

• He became the fastest batsman to score 11,000 ODI runs breaking the record of Sachin Tendulkar of India.

• Kohli took 222 innings whereas Tendulkar had taken 276 innings to achieve it.

• He broke the record of Sachin Tendulkar and Brian Lam of the West Indies to become the fastest batsman to score 20,000 International runs.

• He became the first captain to score five straight fifties in the history of World Cup. He went past Rahul Dravid to become the highest run-scorer in England in ODIs, amongst the Indian batsmen.

• Rahul Dravid had scored 1238 runs in England. He became the third Indian to score 1,000 runs in World Cup history after Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly.

Rohit Sharma

• Rohit Sharma of India became the highest scorer in World Cup 2019 with 648 runs.

• He became the only batsman in the 12th edition of the Cricket World Cup who scored 5 centuries.

• Rohit also broke the record of Kumar Sangakkara who registered a record of 4 centuries in a single WC tournament in the last edition of World Cup 2015.

• He became the fastest Indian to score 2000 runs against Australia in ODIs in 37 innings. 2- He broke the record held by MS Dhoni to hit most International sixes by an Indian with 358 sixes. MS Dhoni held the record with 355 sixes.

• He became the second fastest Indian World Cup hundred scorer against Pakistan in 85 balls. Virendra Shewag was the first Indian who scored the fastest World Cup hundred with 80 balls in 2008 & 84 balls in 2005 against Pakistan. He became the Second Indian in history to smash 3 hundreds in a World Cup after Sourav Ganguly.

• He became the third fastest batsman to score 25 ODI hundreds after South Africa's Hashim Arnie and India's Virat Kohli.

• He became the first Indian to cross 1000 runs in World Cup 2019. He hit highest sixes and scored 4 centuries which equaled the record of Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara of hitting four centuries in a World Cup. Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul scored the highest opening partnership with 180 runs in the World Cup 2019 against Bangladesh. He set the World Record of maximum hundreds in single World Cup which was equaled to Sachin Tendulkar's record accounting to six hundreds.

Other Records

• Shikhar Dhawan became the third Indian batsman after Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly to smash at least three hundreds in World Cup.

• Aaron Finch of Australia smashed 153 runs off 132 balls against Sri Lanka to record the highest ever score by an Australian captain in a World Cup match breaking the record of Ricky Ponting.

• Rashid Khan of Afghanistan became the most expensive bowler in World Cup history accounting 110 runs in nine overs without a single wicket, breaking the record held by New Zealand's Martin Snedden (2/105 off 12 overs).

• Mohammed Shami of India became the second Indian bowler to take a hat-trick in World Cup history after Chetan Sharma. Jasprit Bumrah became the second fastest Indian to take 100 wickets in ODI cricket in his 57th ODI match with 18 wickets after Mohammed Shami.

• India rose to the top of the ICC ODI rankings with 123 points, followed by England (122) and New Zealand (114). Babar Azam of Pakistan became the second-fastest batsman to reach 3,000 ODI runs in 68 innings after Hashim Amla, who had reached the milestone in 57 innings. • Australia clinched Women's World Twenty 20 title as they attained an easy win over England in the final of the Women's World T20 tournament.

• 18th Asian Games were held from August 18 to September 2, 2018 in Jakarta and Palembang cities of Indonesia.

• This is the first time that Asian Games were organized in two cities.

• The opening and closing ceremonies of the Games were held at Gelora Bung Kamo Main Stadium in Jakarta.

• For the first time, eSports and Canoe Polo were contested as demonstration sports.

• China received a total of 289 medals including 132 Gold, 92 Silver and 65 Bronze medals and topped in medal standing for the consecutive 10th time. China, Japan is the only country that has topped the medal standing of Asian Games.

• 18 year old young swimmer Rikako Ikki of Japan was selected as the most valuable player of the 18th Asian Games (MVP).

• Rikako received 6 gold medals and 2 silver medals. 2022 Asian Games will be held in Hangzhou, China.

India in Asian Games 2018

• India got 15 Gold, 24 Silver and 30 Bronze medals with a total of 69 medals and grabbed 8th place in the medal standings. This was India's best performance ever in Asian Games.

• India has bettered its previous best medal count of 65 at the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou, China.

• In the first Asian Games (1951, New Delhi), India won 15 gold, 16 silver and 20 bronze medals, including a total of 51 medals and secured second position in the medal standings.

• In 2018 Asian games, India won the most medals in athletics, including 7 Gold, 10 Silver and 2 Bronze medals. Shooters Ravi Kumar and Apurvi Chandela won the first medal (Bronze) for India.

• Indian wrestler Bajrang Poonia won first gold medal for India by defeating Takatani Daichi of Japan in 65 kg weight categoric by 11-8.

• Indian women wrestler Vinesh Phogat became the first Indian woman wrestler to win gold medal at Asian Games.

• Meerut's 15-year-old shooter, Shardul Vihan, won silver medal (240.7 points) in double trap competition and became the youngest player to win a medal for India in Asian Games.

• Rahi Samobat won gold medal in women's 25 meter pistol event. With this, Rahi became the first Indian shooter to win a gold medal in the Asian Games. India got the 15th and final gold medal from Pranav Vardhan and Shivnath Sarkar duo in the bridge competition.

• 60-year-old Pranav has become the oldest player to win a medal for Indian team.

• 21-year-old Swapna Burman became the first Indian athlete to win a gold medal in the Heptathlon Games. India won its 69th and final medal a bronze, in men's hockey competition.

• Indian flag bearer in the inaugural ceremony, Neeraj Chopra, gave India the first gold medal of the Asian Games in a javelin throw event.

• Rani Rampal, the captain of the women's hockey team, was the Indian flag bearer in the finale.

Hangzhou to Host 2022 Asian Para Games

• The Asian Paralympic Committee (APC) confirmed that Hangzhou in China will host the fourth edition of Asian Para Games in 2022.

• The confirmation came following a visit to Hangzhou in July by APC President Majid Rashed and CEO Tarek Souei.

Swimmer Rikako Ikee of Japan

• On September 4, 2018, Japanese swimmer Rikako Ikee became the first female athlete to be named the Most Valuable Player in the 18" Asian Games by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA).

• She had won 6 gold medals which is the most for a female athlete at a single Game. She will get a trophy and a cheque for $50,000.

• She became the fourth Japanese athlete to win the award since it's inception at the 1998 Bangkok Games.

• Only North Korean shooter So Gin-man, who won seven golds and a silver at New Delhi in 1982, has won more titles at one Asian Games.

First Olympics to deploy facial recognition technology

• On August 8, 2018, it was announced that the Tokyo 2020 will be the first Olympics to deploy facial recognition technology to increase security.

• The Olympic organizers have partnered with NEC, a Japanese telecommunications and information technology firm, to develop the first system of this kind.

Women's Hockey World Cup 2018

• From 21st July to 5th August 2018, Women's Hockey World Cup 2018 was held in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, London.

• Defending champions the Netherlands defeated Ireland 6-0 in the finals and won the Women's Hockey World Cup 2018 title.

• The Netherlands have emerged as the world champions in Women's hockey for a record 8th time. They have extended their unbeaten performance in all competitions to 32 matches. Kitty van Male, one among the 6 different goal scorers emerged as the top scorer of the tournament with 8 goals.

• Spain won the third place match by defeating Australia 3-1 and won their first World Cup medal. India finished the tournament at 8th position.

FIFA World Cup 2018

• FIFA 2018 was the 21st edition of the tournament.

• This was the first World Cup to be held in Eastern Europe.

• The official emblem was designed by Brandin Central, a brand consulting agency based in Lisbon, Portugal.

• The official emblem has an outline of World Cup trophy and has bold use of red, gold, black and blue representing Russian art and Russian flag.

• Zabivaka — "the one who scores" (in Russian) is a wolf who radiates fun, charm and confidence was the official mascot of FIFA World Cup 2018. It has brown and white fur, wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with the words "RUSSIA 2018" and orangse sports goggles. This was designed by Ekaterina Bocharova.

• It took place in Russia from 14 June to 15 July 2018 in 12 venues at 11 Russian cities. There were 32 teams from 5 confederations. Finals took place on 15th July at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow, between France and Croatia.

• FIFA World Cup-2022 will be hosted by Qatar

21st Commonwealth Games-2018

• 21st Commonwealth Games was organized in Gold Coast, Queensland (Australia: 4th-15th April, 2018). The opening ceremony of the 21st Commonwealth Games was held on April 4th 2018 at the Carrara Stadium in the Gold Coast, Queensland. The aim of these games was 'Share the Dream'. The theme of the opening ceremony was 'Hello Earth'.

• The mascot of these games was as Borobi, a blue colored male Koala. This animal, which looks lace a bear, is a vegetarian marsupial native living on trees, found in Koala Australia.

• In this 11-day event, Australia topped the medal tally with a total of 198 medals including 80 gold, 59 silver and 59 bronze medals.

• She has won the Gold medal in 45-48 kg weight category. This was her first Commonwealth game. For the first time, Manika Batra gave India a gold medal in the table tennis singles event.

• Neeraj Chopra gave gold medal to India for the first time in a javelin throw event. For India, the maximum of 4 medals (2 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze) was won by Manika Batra in table tennis. Shreyasi Singh, who won India's 12th gold medal, has made history. She is the country's first woman shooter, to win gold medal for India in the double trap event. In the closing ceremony the Indian team's flag bearer was female boxer M.C. Mary Kom.

First Indian woman to win a medal in international skiing competition

• Internationally organized skiing competition 'Alpine Ejder 3200 Cup' concluded in Turkey.(6-9 January, 2018) On January 9th, 2018, India's Aanchal Thakur won the bronze medal in the Slalom (Skiing race on spiral path) race category. She is first Indian player to win a medal in the international skiing competition.
