Museum Puri Lukisan29 JULY – 25 OCTOBER 2009
KEBIAR SENI XI 1
FOREWORD
Om Suasti astu,
The annual Kebiar Seni exhibitions have been organized by the Museum Puri Lukisan since 1995. Over the years, these exhibitions have helped to promote Modern-Traditional Balinese Art and Balinese artists.
Many benefi ts have been reaped from the Kebiar Seni exhibitions, primarily for young artists, for whom the exhibitions serve as a motivator. From experiencing the exhibitions they are spurred on to continuously producing work, and in the process continue to explore, preserve, maintain and develop the legacy of outstanding achievements by previous talented Balinese artists.
Since 2004 various circumstances forced the Museum to postpone the Kebiar Seni exhibitions, yet, after refl ecting on how benefi cial the Kebiar Seni exhibitions were in the past, the Museum Puri Lukisan has decided to reinvigorate the Kebiar Seni program in 2009.
Now we continue to trace the developments in the Balinese painting arts. Furthermore, this event has been useful for artists and curators to discuss and exchange information, to pursue their knowledge and quality in their artworks without leaving the distinctive style of Modern-Traditional Balinese Painting itself.
The theme of this year’s Kebiar Seni XI is JAGA, which means to preserve. Thus, to honor this precious inheritance: We must explore, care for, continue to develop, and preserve the Modern-Traditional Balinese style.
The masterpieces of great Balinese artists of the past have become the source of inspiration for today’s artists. The artworks that are now being exhibited by the Museum Puri Lukisan will be the inheritance of those to follow.
After experiencing several Kebiar Seni exhibitions, we are very proud that we have introduced many talented young artists to

the world, and they have become prominent artists both locally and internationally. These artists are also passing on their passion of painting to the next generation.
I would like to take the opportunity to thank the Yayasan Ratna Wartha, our curator A.A. Ngurah Muning, the museum’s long-time friends Soemantri Widagdo and Indryana K as the re-invigorators and driving forces behind this Kebiar Seni Exhibition, the museum
volunteer Nina Kelabora for her design contributions, Ida Ayu Made Widyastuti and I Wayan Sumadi for their great effort in preparing for the event, the Museum Puri Lukisan staff and everyone who has contributed to make the Kebiar Seni XI happen.

KEBIAR SENI XI 3
The Modern Balinese painting tradition grew within the banjar community structure of Balinese society. As the smallest unit of the Balinese society, the banjar governs community life and coordinates the ritual ceremonies for the temples within their jurisdiction. The painting tradition is still an integral part of religious activities, where paintings on cloth and wood panel are used to decorate the inner sanctum of their temples.
During the early development of tourism in Bali, these religious paintings found a market. Over time, adjusting to the market demand of foreign tourists, the subject matter shifted from religious narratives to the depiction of the mundane, yet rich life of Bali.
In this annual exhibition, we present the many faces of Balinese painting tradition. Fifty-two painters representing the Kamasan, Batuan, Ubud, Young Artist and Keliki Schools show the diversity within each school as a refl ection of their banjar:
The work of I Made Sujendra (page 48) shows a new growth within the Batuan tradition. The execution deviates from the standard Batuan style with unfi lled background and minimal ornamentation. However, the subject matter itself is still rooted in the Tantric story of the animal kingdom.
The Ubud painters are represented by various banjars: Peliatan, Tebesaya, Padangtegal, Tegallalang and Pengosekan. The work of the prominent Peliatan artist, I Nyoman Kayun (page 20), depicts an episode from a Tantric story where a turtle is being transported by two birds. Another notable Peliatan artist is I Wayan Dolik with his rendition of the folklore: Lutung Kasarung (page 16). Anak Agung Gde Anom Sukawati of banjar Padangtegal presents a painting depicting the sacred Sang Hyang Dedari Dance (page 6) performed by young girls in trance. The works of Dewa Putu Mokoh and I Ketut Gelgel represent the artists from Pengosekan. Giving Birth by Mokoh (page 31) is an attempt to show the infl uence of modern medical care in the Balinese society. The work of Pande Ketut Bawa

and his students (Awan and I Lembod) shows new development from banjar Tegallalang. The Heavenly Nymphs by Pande Ketut Bawa (page 10) is inspired by the photorealism of Deblog, the prominent Pitamaha artist from Denpasar.
The work of I Wayan Rumantara is an excellent example of the contribution from the Keliki School. His work entitled Cock Fighting (page 42) deviates from the common Keliki depiction of Barong dance and the funeral ceremony.
The traditional Wayang or Kamasan School is still thriving as a direct result of the leadership of I Nyoman Mandra. Besides Mandra’s works, it is worth noting the work of Mangku Nengah Muriati, the talented daughter of the prominent Kamasan court painter, Mangku Mura. Her rendition of a fragment of
Bhagavad Gita (page 32) shows the moment where Wishnu convinces Arjuna to go to war against his cousins.
The students of I Ketut Soki and I Gusti Ngurah KK dominate the offerings from the Young Artist School whose naïve style and vibrant colors still attract many admirers to the village of Penestanan.
In this exhibition we celebrate the diversity of modern traditional Balinese painting as a refl ection of the individuality of the banjars. It is this diversity and the support of the banjar community that has sustained the development of Modern Traditional Balinese painting.
