REFLECTION | RÉFLEXION
Performing Mozart’s Requiem is a special, demanding thing. This fantastic
work didn’t get finished by the composer, but his ideas were crystal clear.
Süssmayr did a rather good job of finishing it, but as the revised version by
Franz Beyer — which we are playing tonight — is based on everything original
Mozart wrote and, critically, on Süssmayr’s solutions, it makes this fantastic
piece of music better, and closer to ‘real, original’ Mozart.
Karina Gauvin breathes life into the beautiful Exsultate, Jubilate (where every
detail is 100% Mozart), and we finish the first half with Valentin Silvestrov’s
mysteriously soft and beautiful The Messenger, which has a kind of spiritual
connection with Mozart, using as it does not Mozart’s original music, but only
reminiscences of it.
direct, toutefois.

WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZARTBorn in Salzburg, January 27, 1756Died in Vienna, December 5, 1791
Exsultate, jubilate, K. 165
Mozart wrote Exsultate, jubilate in January
of 1773 while in Milan on his third and
final visit to Italy. This remarkable work
was written for the castrato Venanzio
Rauzzini, who in recent weeks had starred
in highly successful performances of the
composer’s opera Lucio Silla. Mozart
heard the first performance of Exsultate,
jubilate on January 17, ten days before his
seventeenth birthday.
Exsultate, jubilate is similar in form to an
eighteenth-century Italian motet. It consists
of two arias separated by a recitative and a
concluding “Alleluia,” all set to Latin texts.
The work has also been dubbed a “concerto
for voice and orchestra,” a not unreasonable
description as it closely follows the
concerto design of lively outer movements
filled with brilliant effects framing a central
slow movement. There is even a spot for a
cadenza. As Mozart was disposed to do in
his piano concertos, the soloist engages
in lively interplay with the full orchestral
forces as well as with individual members
of the orchestra.
Each section of Exsultate, jubilate offers
its own musical attractions: the opening
Allegro is full of wide leaps and rapid scales
to show off the soloist’s vocal agility; the

Mozart a composé Exsultate, jubilate
Mozart a
entendu la première exécution d’Exsultate,
jubilate le 17 janvier, dix jours avant son
17e anniversaire.
On a dit d’Exsultate, jubilate
cadence. La soliste se livre à un échange
animé avec l’orchestre dans son ensemble
ainsi qu’avec ses différents éléments,
comme Mozart aimait le faire dans ses
concertos pour piano.
In 1970 Joan Patenaude was the soloist for the NAC Orchestra’s first performance of Mozart’s
Exsultate, jubilate, given under the direction of Pierre Hétu. The Orchestra most recently played this
work in 2002 with Pinchas Zukerman on the podium and Heidi Grant Murphy as soloist.

Andante (in A major, a key Mozart often
reserved for his most ravishingly beautiful
music) presents a sublime plea to the
Virgin Mary to grant us peace; the “Alleluia”
presents opportunities for extraordinary
virtuosic display while a single word of text
is stretched out over 150 bars of music
without even a suggestion of tedium.
Chaque segment d’Exsultate, jubilate
démonstration de son agilité vocale;
Exsultate, jubilate
Rejoice, be glad,O you blessed souls,Singing sweet songs; In response to your singingLet the heavens sing forth
with me.
The friendly day shines forth,Both clouds and storms have fled
now;For the righteous there has arisen
an unexpected calm.Dark night reigned everywhere
before; You who feared till now,And joyful for this lucky dawn,Give garlands and lilies with full
right hand.
You, o crown of virgins,Grant us peace,Console our feelings,From which our hearts sigh.
Alleluia.

Exsultate, jubilate,o vos animae beatae!Dulcia cantica canendo, cantui vestro respondendopsallant aethera cum me.

quies.
Tu, virginum corona,tu nobis pacem dona.Tu consolare affectus, unde suspirat cor.
Alleluja.
Exsultate, jubilate

VALENTIN SILVESTROVBorn in Kiev, September 30, 1937Now living in Kiev
The Messenger
The Ukrainian composer Valentin
Silvestrov was born during the period of
the Soviet government’s most oppressive
stance against artists. He refused to
conform to Party dictates, and as a
result his music was slow in attracting
international attention. Fortunately, that
situation has changed in recent years.
Memory and nostalgia play major roles
in Silvestrov’s music. “I do not write new
music,” he has said. “My music is a response
to and an echo of what already exists.” Of
his composition The Messenger, written in
1996 in response to the death of his wife
Larysa, he writes: “It is as if a visitor from
some other dimension in time came to us
with a message . . . perhaps Larysa herself,
perhaps some distant muse speaking in the
language of the late eighteenth century.
This archaic and yet vitally contemporary
language is filtered through a profoundly
postmodern sensibility.” The Messenger
was originally written for piano, then
reworked for piano, string orchestra and
synthesizer. Seth Brodsky (Allmusic.com)
describes it as “one of Silvestrov’s more
elliptical scores, its oblique mixture of
Mozart quotation and pastiche strangely
remote, like a mask of music.”

Seth Brodsky
(Allmusic.com) en donne la description
suivante : « C’est une des partitions les
plus elliptiques de Silvestrov, un mélange
oblique de citations et de pastiches de
Mozart, étrangement décalé, comme un
masque musical. »
This is the first time the NAC Orchestra has performed Valentin Silvestrov’s The Messenger.

WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART
Requiem, K. 626 (Franz Beyer edition)
During the nineteenth century, the
climate of Romanticism fostered the
weaving of legends to explain events. The
account of the mysterious stranger, the
“messenger of death” who visited Mozart
and commanded him to write his own
Requiem, is well-known in some form to
most music lovers. Far too many people
today believe the account as presented in
Peter Shaffer’s play and Milos Forman’s
film Amadeus, but these were by no means
the only counterfeiters. Among others,
there was the famous author Alexander
Pushkin in his 1830 play Mozart and Salieri,
which Rimsky-Korsakov turned into a short
opera in 1898. Salieri, we now know for
certain, had nothing to do with Mozart’s
death. The complete story, according
to recent scholarship and supported by
meticulous source attributions, can be
found in Christoph Wolff’s monograph
published in 1993, Mozart’s Requiem:
Historical and Analytical Studies —
Documents — Score.
The Requiem was commissioned in
July, 1791 by a Count Walsegg-Stuppach.
Walsegg’s twenty-year-old wife had died
the previous February. Being a wealthy
man, he arranged two memorial tributes for
her, one in marble and granite created by
one Johann Martin Fischer and one in tone.
Desiring a Requiem for his wife but wishing
to remain anonymous, Walsegg sent his
steward to Mozart with the commission
and about ten percent of the total fee.
Upon Mozart’s death on December 5, the
work was far from complete and his widow
Constanze, fearful not only for payment
of the remainder of the fee, but also of
WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART
Alexandre Pouchkine a notamment écrit
Historical and Analytical Studies —
Documents — Score.

retraction of the portion already paid,
appealed to various musicians to finish
the Requiem. First she approached one of
Mozart’s pupils and friends, Franz Jakob
Freystädtler, but he refused. Next she turned
to another Mozart pupil, the composer
Joseph Leopld Eybler. Eybler signed a
letter of agreement to do the work, but he
soon abandoned the task, claiming he had
neither the time nor the ability for such a
lofty assignment. The task was eventually
entrusted to and completed by Franz Xaver
Süssmayr (1766-1803), still another of
Mozart’s pupils. Süssmayr re-copied all the
work Mozart had already done and went
on from there. He presented Constanze
with two copies of the finished product in
February of 1792. Walsegg apparently was
satisfied with what Constanze handed him,
despite Süssmayr’s forgery of Mozart’s
signature and having dated the manuscript
1792. The Count in turn re-copied the score
in his own hand and entitled it Requiem
composto del Conte Walsegg.
Just how much of Mozart’s last work
is his own and how much is Süssmayr’s
has been the subject of much controversy.
Furthermore, Süssmayr may well have
incorporated passages into his own work
that had already been worked out by Eybler
and possibly others as well. The issue has
been discussed in considerable detail by
Désirant conserver l’anonymat, il dépêcha
son intendant chez Mozart pour lui passer
commande d’un requiem et lui verser
un acompte correspondant à peu près
à 10 p. cent du cachet. Lorsque Mozart
exigeante. La tâche de terminer le Requiem
échut finalement à Franz Xaver Süssmayr
(1766-1803), un autre élève de Mozart.
Süssmayr recopia tout le travail qu’avait
accompli Mozart et entama l’écriture des
passages manquants. En février 1792, il
remit à Constanze deux exemplaires de
l’ouvrage terminé. Walsegg sembla satisfait
de la composition que lui livra Constanze,
même si Süssmayr avait contrefait la
signature de Mozart et daté le manuscrit

numerous scholars. The edition used for
tonight’s performance is that published in
1972 by Peters and edited by the German
musicologist Franz Beyer (born in 1922 and
still living at the age of 95 in April 2017).
Beyer’s work has been called the “least
intrusive” (Peter Gutmann) of the modern
versions of the Requiem; his differences
from the standard Süssmayr version will be
apparent only to very keen ears. He did not
tinker with the structure of the score, aside
from adding a four-bar cadential passage
to each of the two “Hosannas.” Beyer’s
work consists mostly of re-orchestration
— paring down some of the passages to a
more transparent texture in accordance
with what Mozart’s style was like at the
time and touching up what he describes as
“clumsy part-writing, harmonically wrong
notes, elementary mistakes and lack of
compositional craft [that mar] the noble
texture of Mozart’s vocal setting.” Reference
to specific details can be found in Beyer’s
extensive introduction to the score.
Ironically, the honour of the first
performance of the Requiem did not go to
Count Walsegg after all. The arts patron
Baron Gottfried van Swieten organized
a performance as a benefit concert for
Mozart’s widow and children in Vienna
on January 2, 1793. This took place at the
Jahn-Saal, and Walsegg probably did not
even know about it. The Count directed
his own performance from a score he had
copied in his own hand from Süssmayr’s
completed version at a small church on the
outskirts of Vienna nearly a year later, on
December 14, 1793. Nor did Walsegg realize
that much of the work was not authentic
Mozart, for he received a copy of the score
as completed by Süssmayr, not the original
manuscript. Predating either of these
complete performances was the memorial
de 1792. De son côté, le comte recopia
lui-même la partition et y apposa la
mention : « Requiem composto del Conte
Walsegg ».

service held on December 10 (five days
after Mozart’s death), at which Mozart’s
fragment was heard in some form.
By Robert Markow
compositeur).

Death is struck and nature quaking,All creation is awaking,To its Judge an answer making.
Lo! the book exactly worded,Wherein all hath been recorded;Thence shall judgement be
awarded.
When the Judge His seat attaineth,
And each hidden deed arraigneth,Nothing unavenged remaineth.
What shall I, frail man, be pleading?
Who for me be interceding,When the just are mercy needing?
chorus3. King of majesty tremendous,Who dost free salvation send us, Fount of pity, then befriend us.
soprano, mezzo-soprano,tenor, bass4. Think, kind Jesus, my salvationCaused Thy wondrous
Incarnation;Leave me not to reprobation.
Faint and weary Thou hast sought me,
On the Cross of suffering bought me,
Shall such grace be vainly brought me?
Righteous Judge, for sin’s pollution,
Grant Thy gift of absolution,Ere that day of retribution.

vous m’avez racheté par le supplice de la croix;

Music Festival, the Ravinia Festival and the
Bravo!Vail Festival where he works with the
New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia
Orchestra, and the Chicago Symphony. He
is the recipient of two GRAMMY® awards,
for Best Classical Album and Best Chorus
Performance, for Verdi’s Requiem.
Well known for his work with children,
Duain Wolfe retired from the Colorado
Children’s Chorale, an organization that he
founded and conducted for 25 years.
He directed the Chicago Symphony
Chorus for the 1998 GRAMMY® Award-
winning recording of Wagner’s Die
Meistersinger von Nürnberg with the late
Sir Georg Solti, and prepared members of
the Chorus for performing John Williams’
original score for the November 2012
movie Lincoln.
Duain Wolfe has received the Michael
Korn Founders Award for Development
of the Professional Choral Art and the
(Colorado) Governor’s Award for Excellence
in the Arts.

Tobi Hunt McCoy is enjoying another
year as Season Stage Manager with the
National Arts Centre Orchestra. In past
seasons, Ms. McCoy stage managed
the Lord of the Rings Symphony,
Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s
Dream with Christopher Plummer in
2001 and Colm Feore in 2014, and much
of the Orchestra’s educational and Pops
programming. Also in 2014, she co-
produced the Pops show On the Air with
Jack Everly for the Edmonton Symphony
Orchestra, a show they also produced in
2007 for the NAC Orchestra.
Additional professional duties have
included bracing the backstage doors
against the almighty power of Richard
Strauss, Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the
air conditioning system at Montreal’s La
Maison Symphonique, guest conducting
the NAC Orchestra in rehearsal for the
Black & White Opera Soiree, providing air-
guitar support during the Led Zeppelin
tribute concert, shepherding numerous
choruses to and from the rehearsal hall,
utilising her creative Vancouver French with
the combined choral and orchestral forces
in Mahler’s Eighth Symphony, and duck
wrangling for the Mysterioso Pops concert.
She is excited to be back teaching
English and Drama at Lisgar Collegiate.
dans un concert hommage à Led Zeppelin;
accompagné de nombreux chœurs dans
leurs allées et venues à l’arrière-scène;
Lisgar Collegiate Institute. © F
