Large wheels

On wet soils, appreciate the high flotationadvantages of dual wheels on Alterna500, or the super-single wheels on theAlterna 400. The risk of ruts in difficultconditions is minimised.

Flexibility and ground contouradaptation

Despite the wide cutting width of theAlterna, these machines are well suitedfor following rolling terrain. Benefitsinclude:- preservation of grass stubble- reduced power requirements- less skid wear

Single point suspension adjustment

The ALTERNA suspension is ensured by suspension links with ball joints and centrally adjusted suspension springs.

Double swaths ideally suited for 3 m / 10’ pick up attachments

Double swaths, separated by up to 80 cm / 2’7” depending on the swath width setting,allow the tractor to operate without driving on the cut crop. - Complete and even drying is assured as significantly more crop is exposed to air and

sunlight than if only a narrow single windrow is produced that is not run over by thetractor.

- With an overall width adjustable from 1.90 to 2.90 m/ 6’2” to 9’6”, they are perfectly adapted to 3 m pick-ups. The crop volume handled being distributed on twoswaths, the harvesting machine is evenly fed.

The most versatile conditioning system available with its free swinging fingers specially designedto condition the broadest range of crops. The cylindrical fingers, of high quality forged steel, lift,condition and carry the crop from the cutterbar through the comb. The conditioning is regular and homogeneous. Contrary to some sharp edged metal flails, the cylindrical fingers do not damage delicate crops.

Conditioning adjustment

The conditioning intensity changes withthe degree of overlap between combteeth and rotor fingers. Conditioning isincreased or reduced by means of a lever.Comb in raised position: little conditio-ning effect.

Safety

Should a foreign object enter the machine, the spring loaded comb swings back and is automatically repositioned.

Conditioning by means of swinging fingers and comb

The base of the crop stems enters the machine first, allowing the rotorfingers to make initial contact with the crop’s thickest part (longest to dry).

The natural wax coating on both stem and leaves is broken down due to friction of plant against shield.

As crop flows between the comb teeth,the natural wax coating is opened along the length of the stem, allowingmaximum moisture content to evaporate.

With a comb completely raised, there islittle conditioning effect.

Reversible comb

The reversible comb has two sides:One (rounded) for conditioning delicate crops andOne for gramineous crops.

For grass remaining in the field, there is aloss in sugar, nitrogen content as well asdigestibility. The faster silage making is completed, the faster the total cropnutritional value is preserved.

In silage making even more than in hay-lage, harvesting at the right stage meansharvesting the full forage plant value:sugar, protein, minerals and dry matter.Immediate action is required when plant stage and weather conditions are gathered.

Mowing at the right time

Allows the mowing operation to be postponed in the afternoon instead of themorning at which time soil and grass arestill wet.

Wide spread as alternative

In wet conditions, the crop can also bespread over the whole working width.Thus, an optimal drying process can beensured, because significantly more forage is exposed to air and sunlight thanif only a narrow single windrow is produced.

Cutterbar protection

- The cutterbar gearcase is rigid and sturdy, manufactured from a high grade steel and reinforced by underside shields and a stiffener.- The discs are protected by skids fitted with wear plates located under the cutterbar.- Deflector shields located between the disc skids on the front of each cutterbar prevent a bent knife from damaging the cutterbar.

Quickly removable disc bearing stations

- Disc pinions are mounted on reinforced double row angular contact ball bearings,mounted in a rigid one piece cast housing.

- Removal of disc bearing stations, as well as intermediate idler gears, is quick and easy,minimising downtime.

PROTECTADRIVE Safety

Kuhn’s exclusive PROTECTADRIVE cutterbar system protects the gear train if a major obstacle is struck in the field.

Oval discs featuring well-knownadvantages

- Improved flow of cut crop towards theconditioning rotor: no clogging,

- Clean mowing: knives fitted on the disc’slarge axis for a great overlap area,

- After hitting an obstacle, a bent knifewill not collide with an adjacent disc,

- No jamming of foreign bodies betweentwo discs.

Cutting height

Three i cutting heights are available: high / medium / low. It is adjusted by means of the three skid shoes, one located where the two cutterbars are connected and the two otherson the cutterbar ends.

Its “wing” shape facilitates cutterbarpenetration even in the most dense crops.Crop flows through the conditioner and isejected in the centre.Results:- The tractor never runs over the crop.- Easy pick-up by following harvesting

A perfect synchronisation

Placing the machine in transport/work position (and vice versa) is carried out from the tractor cab.1. Responding to the hydraulic controls, the machine pivots to place itself in working position.2. The transport wheels are folded up.3. At the same time, the working wheels are lowered.4. The ALTERNA then completes its rotation.

Gyrodine swivel hitch for sharpturns

The driver no longer has to worry aboutthe PTO when making sharp turns. Thedistance between the tractor PTO andmachine stays the same, U-joint anglesremain constant no matter how sharp thetractor turns.

Protection of drive components

The drive components are protected fromoverload and shock by means of a friction slip and an over running clutch.

The Gyrodine gearbox drives the mower conditioner unit by means of alarge diameter shaft.

The Gyrodine swivel hitch is lubricated bymeans of an integrated pump. Thismeans: one maintenance point, no leaks.

Centralised controls

- All the functions are controlled by anelectro/hydraulic bloc fitted on themachine.

- Hydraulic and electrical power is supplied through two double actinghydraulic outlets and one electrical socket on the tractor.

Electrical remote control

An electric selector lever combined withthe double acting valve controls the trans-port wheel raising/lowering.

Parking stand

When uncoupled, the machine rests on abuilt-in parking stand, making it easy andsafe for hitching and unhitching.
