Dear Parents,Student Volunteer Week:This week we have celebrated our wonderful Student Volunteers. We have more than 20 students mainly from universities assisting us. Thank you to all involved for your wonderful service above and beyond as you build relationships with the children and young people and help our staff in so many varied and valuable ways. Independent Education Plan Meetings:Our Independent Education Plan meetings took place last week and I trust you feel engaged with your teaching team and have now set goals for the remainder of this year. We look forward to the semester of progress ahead. Thank you to all our class teaching teams for your willingness to be so involved in collaboratively checking on and developing goals for our students with our parents.

Building Progress:With our second concrete pour now done completing the ground floor we are starting to see the building rise up from the ground. The form work continues for the first floor and by the end of the month we can expect to see the next concrete pour of the first floor!

Independent Schools Expo:St Lucy’s had a booth at the Independent School Expo in Chatswood last weekend. A big thank you to the following staff who gave up their weekend to be there; Alex Fisher, Amy Dillon, Steve Davies, Terry Williamson, Caroline Fowler and Ali Picone. We all enjoyed meeting the many people who came through the Expo, discussing possible future enrolments with prospective families and networking with all the Independent Schools in the area.

Book Week:Next week we are celebrating Book Week with a focus at each Morning Song. This will be supplemented with special Library lessons in each class. The week will culminate in Reading Challenge Awards and Prizes presented at Assembly followed by our Annual Book Week Character Parade. Thanks to Mrs Ledlin for all her behind the scenes organisation of the Week. Looking forward to seeing you all there next Friday.

BOOK WEEK REMINDER - READING CHALLENGE/DRESS UP PARADE

MEN’S GROUP 28 AUGUST 6.30pm

SCHOOL FEE REMINDER

I hope you are embracing your child’s

‘Secret Power’ by joining in the St Lucy’s

Reading Challenge, reminding you that all

children are invited to enter! Your child

just needs to be immersed in a story which

could mean reading, listening, watching,

and/or looking. Each child who participates

will receive a ‘Certificate of Achievement,’ and the top 10 readers will

receive a book, with a name plate, to celebrate their achievement. You

are invited to take as many reading logs as you would like. A reminder

that all entries should be sent back to me by Monday 19th August for

collation.

Some activities this Book Week include special library time in

classrooms, photos with our outstanding superhero, made, hand

painted and donated by Our Lady of Dolour’s, Chatswood, bookmark

decorating, and our story time in morning song. We will finish book

week with our annual Dress up Parade after Assembly on Friday 23rd

August, 2019. The children will parade around the playground in their

character costumes and we will have one prize for ‘Most Outstanding

Costume’, which will be presented in Afternoon Song. We hope

everyone gets involved and enjoys our special Book Week this year.

We look forward to seeing you at our assembly on Friday, 23rd August.

Library Facilitator

Dads, Grandfathers, Uncles...The next Men’s Evening will be held at St Edmund’s on the 28 August:

6.30pm light meal and drinks followed by the get- together from 7

to 8. We always begin with a chat about any issues that have arisen

regarding our children and family.

In the second half of the meeting we will be examining life for our

children after they leave school. Because a range of questions have

continued to pop up at previous meetings on this issue, Jon Franzin

(Principal at St Edmund’s) has offered to provide a session on ‘careers

after leaving school’. Whether your child is in Kinder or Year 12 it will

be worth joining us for an in-depth discussion. Please come with any

ideas you may have.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION AND PASTORAL CARE

Sacramental Program and Rite of Reconciliation: This week Sr Helen facilitated the third and final preparation session for the students preparing to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation next week. The children have participated beautifully in each of these sessions as they’ve listened to stories that Jesus told, sang songs and sorted out images related to good choices and wrong choices. They’ve also learnt that it is kind to say sorry and that God loves us very much! Please keep the following students (and two siblings) in your prayers: Dylan, Elijah, Daniel, Luke, Luka, Christopher, Alexandra, Alexander and Jordan.

C3 Cares Shopping Trip: This week, many of our parents attended this FREE shopping trip kindly provided by C3 Church Wahroonga. Two C3 representatives, Helen and Sue, hosted our parents welcoming them to their warehouse and providing them with many free goodies, as well as a morning tea! This incredibly generous gesture is on offer each term, so don’t miss out on next term’s trip!

SAVE THE DATE: Father’s Day Liturgy and Open Classrooms: This is to let you know that on Friday 30th August, all our dads and special males (eg uncles/grandads/carers) are invited to attend a special morning we have planned ahead of Father’s Day. Firstly, there will be our whole school liturgy at 9am, which will be followed by activities within your child’s classroom and then a morning tea to finish by 10.30am. More information will be sent out closer to the day, however we look forward to seeing you there!

SAVE THE DATE: Parent Retreat: Once again this year, we will be offering our parents the opportunity to have some time for themselves as we open up our school for supervision of students and siblings on Sunday 8th September from 12.30pm until 3.30pm. More details will be sent out closer to the date, but pop this into your diaries now so that you can start planning that lunch/massage/movie/walk/outing you’ve been hoping to enjoy!

Wishing you peace and blessings!Vanessa DillonClassroom Teacher - REC

There have been two special Feast Days recently in our Catholic Church… and each of them is for two very special Marys! On the 8th August it was the Feast of St Mary of the Cross – a day when we celebrate Australia’s very own Saint, Mary Mackillop. On the 15th August it

was the Feast of the Assumption of Mary Our Mother – a day when we honour the faith and devotion of Mary, and

the role she played in bringing Jesus into this world.

THERAPY UPDATE

Head of TherapyDear families,

Thanks to everyone who invited me or another member of the Therapy Team to your IEP meetings last week. It was a busy couple of days for our team, but time very well spent. It’s always brilliant to spend some time collaborating on a fresh set of goals to drive our work into the second half of the year. I also find myself inspired as teams reflect on the progress made and how far our students have come in

the year so far. There’s such enormous effort put in across settings to help our students be their best, and it’s always wonderful to take the time to recognise the achievements made, while looking forward to achievements yet to come.

All the best,Steve Davies Head of Therapy Services

Speech PathologyFor weeks 5 and 6, we’ll be keeping with our questioning theme for Word of the Week, shifting over to “Who”. I like this word because “who” questions tell us about people, so it’s necessarily got a social edge to it.

For those people using Key Word Sign, here’s the link to the sign for “who” in the Auslan Signbank. http://www.auslan.org.au/dictionary/words/who-1.html.

One of the Key Word Sign trainers at St Lucy’s likes to remember how to do this sign by saying that it’s like drawing a circle in the air with your finger, like the circle your mouth makes when you say the word. I like that one

For those using Proloquo2Go, “who” is located on the home page as shown.
