The syringe in this picture is full of air. What do you think will happen to the

balloon if the syringe is pushed in?

Why?

When the syringe is pushed down the balloon inflates because the air

travels through the tube to the balloon.

Here’s a closer look...

The syringe attached to the balloon is an

example of a PNEUMATIC SYSTEM. What do you think the word ‘pneumatic’ means?

Pneumatic systems are systems that use air pressure to make things move or work properly. There are lots of pneumatic systems that we use every day. Lots of machinery in factories use pneumatics too.

Have a look at the pictures of pneumatics on the next

slides. Do you think you can explain how they work?

Pneumatic drills use air pressure to push the chisel down while a spring pushes it back up. This repeats very quickly and is

strong enough to cut through rock and pavements.

The tube is attached to a bicycle tyre and when the

pump is pushed down, compressed air is forced

through the tube and into the tyre, allowing it to inflate.

Pressurised air is driven into each pipe at the

organists control which makes a different sound on every different sized pipe.

Today you will be looking at how to create pneumatic systems in preparation for creating a moving monster with pneumatic parts.

Let’s have a look at how to create a simple

pneumatic system...

You will need: a syringe, plastic tubing and a balloon.

First, attach the tubing to the syringe, making sure that it is firmly attached and won’t move.

Make sure the syringe is pulled out and full of air before you start.

Put the mouth of the balloon over the other end of the plastic tubing.

Secure it with a elastic band.

Can you think of any other ways of making a pneumatic system?

You now have a working pneumatic system!
