F(L? OF THE ?ONTH

NS(DE LLE WYNLlewyn Davis is a rare example of an extremelycomplex, engaging lead character in an Oscar-seasondrama who doesnt progress one bit during the filmsstory. He has no character arc, no development- hesimple starts in one place and goes in a little circle untilhe reaches the beginning again.

Maybe this is why Joel & Ethan Coens latest filmreceived a total of 2 Oscar nominations- and theywerent for Best Picture or Actor! Cinematography- asthe film has more beautiful blues and greys thananything since Catherine Hardwickes Twilight andfeatures a colour palet which sets the tone for, evendefines, the work as a whole. Sound Mixing because,hey- its a musical! Or is it? There are songs, performedin their entirety, and there are quite a few, but do they

carry along the story- the true definition of a moviemusical? Thats up for discussion. Most of the songsrepresent Llewyns state of mind as he performs them,such as the chirpy but shallow Please Mister Kennedywhich he reluctantly performs for cash at a studiosession with Justin Timberlake and Adam Driverscharacters. He is somewhat happy to be getting paid, butis sitting beside the man whose girlfriend he (possibly)impregnated and must pay for the abortion of, and isabout to a sign a form which will prevent him for

earning any royalties from the hit-in-waiting song.

Oscar Isaac, who has been seen in supporting roles inmany significant films, is truly superb in his central roleas Llewyn, carrying the film with the kind of solemness

and subtleness that would make Jennifer Lawrencehave an anxiety attack. Ulysses, the Gorfeins cat,would be more likely to receive an Oscar nominationfor work on this film, and to be honest- that tells youEVERYTHING you need to know about theAcademy Awards and their values.

Carey Mulligan, Timberlake, Driver and GarrettHedlund all pop up in quite small roles, and the factthat they are all very well known makes their rolesfeel small- whereas if they werent stars, theircharacters would just be IRRELEVANTSUPPORTING CHARACTERS. John Goodman, onthe other hand, proves once again what an absolutef**king genius he is in an equally small but hugelypowerful performance.

Inside Llewyn Davis is, on the surface, a film aboutnothing whatsoever featuring nothing whatsoeverand starring characters who care about nothingwhasoever. If you closer to the surface, its about somuch more than that.
