UNIDIIRECTIONAL

•The Oesophagus is surrounded at the top and bottom by two muscular rings

•1. upper esophageal sphincter 2. lower esophageal sphincter,

•Act to close the esophagus when food not being swallowed

•The Oesophageal sphincters are functional, but not anatomical sphincters, meaning that they are sections of the esophageal wall that act as a sphincter, but do not have distinct thickenings like other sphincters
