QUESTIONS FOR THE DOCTOR

How many people with Parkinson’s do you treat?

How do my other health conditions and medications affect my PD and how it’s treated?

Are you aware of new research and treatments?

Are there lifestyle changes that can help my PD?

Who would you suggest for a second opinion? A reputable doctor will not be offended.

Due to the shortage of Movement Disorder Specialists in New Mexico, receiving care from specialists in nearby states can be an option. To lessen the frequency of out of state trips, a Movement Disorder Specialist may be willing to develop and annually update a plan of care that’s carried out through more frequent visits to a local neurologist, internist, or primary care physician.

Is Your Doctor Right for You? Once you’ve found a qualified doctor, the next step is to decide whether the doctor is the right one for you. Consider these questions:

Are you comfortable speaking with your doctor?

Do you feel respected by your doctor?

Are questions answered to your satisfaction?

Do you feel that your concerns have been taken seriously?

Can you get in touch with the doctor between visits?

Ask your doctor, “How long should I expect to wait for a return phone call?”

Does your doctor have a backup doctor in his/her absence?
