THINGS THAT MIGHT IMPEDE MOVEMENT OF

ANIMALS

If animals refuse to move through an alley, chute or race, there may be a very simple solution.

Once the area is clear of animal traffic, you need to lookup the race for common distractions such as:

Sparkling reflections on puddles

Reflections on smooth metal

Chains that jiggle

Metal clanging or banging

High pitched noise Air hissing - should be silenced with mufflersor piped outside

Air drafts blowing towards approaching animals

Clothing hung on the fence

THINGS THAT MIGHT IMPEDE MOVEMENT OF

ANIMALS

Piece of plastic that is moving

Fan blade movement

Seeing people moving up ahead

Small object on the floor - such as a coffee cup

Changes in flooring and texture Drain grate on the floor

Sudden changes in the colour of equipment.

Colours with high contrast are the worst

Race entrance is too dark.

Bright light such as blinding sun.

Animals will move from a darker place to a brighterplace, but they will not move toward blinding light.

Animals may balk at one-way and back-up gates.

Coffee cups could beenrichment that’s too

scary

The plastic strip is too spooky, thesame flooring should be used

throughout

Yellow boots could be seem up aheadthrough the grating, a solid wall wouldfix this or don’t introduce new things

when attempting to move animals

WHAT’S THE PROBLEM ....

Animals will not enter this facility because it looks verydark. This picture shows bad design because the wall ofthe building is located at the junction between the singlefile chute and the crowd pen. Animal movement into abuilding can be improved by installing skylights in theroof to illuminate the interior of the building with naturallight. Translucent skylights are best because the providediffuse light with no shadows.

MOVING CAPTIVE ANIMALS

Fear moves animals!!

Hoses and water guns will move an animal, it mayalso move them in the wrong direction or make itworse for you next time as fear and stress levelsincrease each time – may become unpredictable

You may need to use this in emergencies or if timelines are short.

This method can be very useful to start theconditioning/training process to get the messageacross.

IDENTIFY ANIMAL TRANSPORTATION

REQUIREMENTS

Animals need to be prepared for transportation. Fasting? Reduced food and water intake? Sedation?

Conditioning eg Box training and tricking, acclimatisation, newdiet started, new keepers introduced, quarantine/medical checks– fit to travel, unknown pregnancies, microchip or identification

Transport containers appropriate to the species aredesigned and selected ensuring adequate padding, enoughroom but not too much that injuries occur, self containmentfor quarantine, easy access to check on animal duringtransport, protection for animal transport workers – idiot

proofed, access to provide food and/or water duringextended trips, ventilation, cooling or heating if necessary

Transport containers maybe as simple as sugar bags, pillow slips, cardboard boxes, plastic boxes, postal bags, baskets, pet containers depending on the distance to travel.

IATA- THE INTERNATIONAL AIR TRANSPORT

ASSOCIATION

Carriage of live animals by air is considered the most humane andexpedient method of transportation over long distances. IATA ensuresthat both safety and animal welfare are addressed in all regulatoryissues pertaining to transportation of live animals by air.

IATA coordinates the Live Animals and Perishables Board(LAPB) and provides key input to the airline industry on issues such

as animal welfare, identification, and animal behaviour based onmodern science.

IATA's Live Animals Regulations (LAR) is the worldwide standard fortransporting live animals by commercial airlines. Whether it be a pet,an animal transported for zoological or agricultural purposes or forany other reason, the objective of the LAR is to ensure all animals aretransported safely and humanely by air.

CITES endorsement of IATA's Live Animals Regulationsthe Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species(CITES) recommends that all parties dealing with the preparation andtransport of live animal specimens follow the instructions provided byIATA's Live Animals Regulations (LAR)and incorporate them in theirnational legislations.

LIVE ANIMALS REGULATIONS (LAR)

The Global Standard for the Transportation of LiveAnimals by Air

The Live Animals Regulations are enforced by theEuropean Union, the US Fish and Wildlife Service andgenerally meet or exceed the intent of the US Animal

Welfare Act (AWA Ensure your animal transportation procedures are

compliant with international or local regulations

THE GENERAL IDEA

Container must be large enough for the animal to stand up,turn around and lie down in a natural manner.

It should be as comfortable as possible.

Container must be strong enough to protect the animal duringtransport, be secure enough to contain it and have sufficient

ventilation. The door must be secured in such a manner that it will not

open accidentally or the animal cannot open it during handlingand transport.

Nothing of the animal should not be able to fit through anyventilation opening or door mesh.

The container must have a water container within thecontainer with outside access for filling.

The container should be constructed out of rigid plastic, wood,or a material of comparable strength. Fibreboard or wiremesh containers are not suitable for air transportation.

EXAMPLES OF TRANSPORTATION BOXES FOR

DOGS AND CATS

The animal must be able to stand in itsnatural position inside the container with itshead in an upright position …

… sit inside the container without its head

or ears touching the ceiling …

… … lie down with its paws straight and

turn around in the container. Watercontainer must be present within the

container with outside access for filling.

SEDATION & USE OF TRANQUILIZERS ON ANIMALS

It has been a long standing practice of IATA and itsconstituent carriers to discourage the use ofsedatives and tranquilizers in animals to betransported either as cargo or as cabin baggage

due to the potential for adverse effects duringtransport. This view is endorsed by veterinaryorganizations such as the American VeterinaryMedical Association.

More info suggests clomicalm etc used for a few

weeks before maybe beneficial and have residualeffects during transport

Some species have specific standards for transportationand export – tassy devils

What about QUARANTINE requirements.

http://www.aqis.gov.au/animex/asp/search.asp export ofzoo animals but what about their food??

Import of zoo animals but what about their food andwaste???

How are you going to move the box or animal if it isanethetised – forklift, bobcat?
