Hello friends and welcome to the Spring Fashion Issue! We’re so excited for warmth around the corner and the chance to finally don slightly fewer amounts of clothing. There’s nothing quite like Spring with it’s many new beginnings. Rising temperatures, beautiful blooms, growing days and, of course, fresh fashions! Contributor Shanda Snyder fills us in on all we need to know to stay on trend this Spring in “Hemlock & Paloma” (page 17). After picking out your must-try trends, stop by Mix It Up (page 37) where Jon Shouldis, Mour’s house foodie, has given

us the ingredients for Spring in a glass - a martini glass!

CURRENTLY: I attend BCTC full time and, also, work as a nanny full time. I, also, make and sell clothing both locally and online, specializing in hand painted designs. You can check out my work at www.madisonscustomcloset.com

INSPIRATION: I find most of my inspiration comes from music and art that I stumble upon. I really look up to artists like Andy Warhol and Jimi Hendrix. Their ideas and creations were just so raw and really stir my creativity. I, also, really look up to Soreyda Benedit-Begley. She is a local designer here in Lexington and has overcome so much in her life and gets to do what she loves everyday. Through her success, she still finds the time to help whomever reach their dreams. I know she has helped me so much and I could never repay her for her kindness and willingness to help.

SHOPPING: I actually do not do a whole lot of shopping, I keep myself on a very strict budget. I rummage through my mom and grandmother’s old clothes and alter what I do find. I am a big believer in recycling clothing so when I do shop I go to the Goodwills and The Salvation Army here in Lexington. A great local shop I do indulge in is Street Scene. It’s only the best vintage shop I’ve ever been to. It’s like going into a time machine offering everything from furniture to clothing. They get their hands on the best vintage pieces out there which beats rummaging through racks at Goodwill.

DREAM JOB: My dream job would be to work on a design team for a brands like Free People or Wildfox. The ultimate dream though . . . being a creative director for a timeless label like Versace or Calvin Klein.

STYLE ICON: I am obsessed with Rihanna. She can do no wrong in my eyes. This direction she has taken with her style is so empowering to me. She is not afraid to show off her body and always comes across with an edge. She is a major trendsetter right now and I don’t see it slowing down at all. I would faint if I could dress her one day.

LEX FASHION: I think the fashion industry here in Lexington is going to continue to grow. I can’t believe how far it’s come since I really started getting invested into it 5 years ago. I hope to see a local shop open and carry only local designs. That would be huge and promote our talent here in Lexington even more.

summer morning spent selecting the week’s essentials, and treats, at the 5/3 Pavilion Farmer’s Market.

There’s a real sense of community there that provides an opportunity to run into friends, meet new people

and experience each other in a unique way. What’s not to love about shopping

local goods with locals?!

TY:How did you get started in your current career? I had been in several weddings and wanted to create a comfortable and charming place for brides and their friends to shop locally.

What is your favorite spot to shop local?Peggy’s, Adelé & Worlds Apart

BRANDICE:Is this the career you always wanted?I always knew I wanted to be a PA. I started out in Emergency Medicine and Surgery, but always had a love for skin. I am so thankful that my path has led me to a happier side of medicine. No one is sick and people leave my office with smiles on their faces.

Who or what is your biggest inspiration?I am obsessed with all things related to beauty and fashion. I am constantly “studying” faces and love the fact that each patient’s unique features make them beautiful in their own way.

ANA:What is your favorite part of your job?My favorite part about my job is the amazingly creative and generous people I get to work with. I feel like you get back what you put out, and I must have done something right because I have the most amazing clients anyone could want.

Who or what is your biggest inspiration?My biggest inspiration(s) are my two wonderful kids. They drive me to do what I do. My mother is, also, a huge inspiraiton because she raised us to do anything out of love and taught us to be very independent. I hope to pass that along to my kids.

AIMEE:What is your favorite part of your job?I love helping people create memories and share with one another. There is just something about enjoying good food at the dinner table that allows people to unwind and connect in a real way. To facilitate that moment of connection; to create an environment for people to enjoy food and drinks they love so they’re relaxed enough to enjoy one another’s company – that’s why I do what I do. That’s my source of inspiration.

Is this the career you always wanted?While I worked on my management degree, I, also, worked in restaurants. I loved food so much, it seemed like the perfect job for me. What I didn’t expect was the hospitality industry, also, gave me the ability to connect with people of varying backgrounds in a way that’s not possible in most aspects of our daily lives. I noticed people were happy and fun to be around when they’re enjoying a great meal, and I noticed I loved providing them with that moment. This realization is when I decided what to do with the management degree I was working so hard to achieve.

SHELIA:What is your favorite local spot to shop?I shop local and eat local. My friends joke if they can’t find me, they know to check Dudley’s. Debbie Long is a personal friend and has done such a great job with her new location. She has been a major factor in the success of downtown.

How did you get started in your current career?In addition to owning my jewelry store for 20 years, I recently started a security business with two other partners. COLORSThere is a new twist when it comes to the “it” colors for Spring 2014. Alongside the idealistic freshness of pastels, designers are pairing vibrant brights to add luscious variety and an undeniable balance this upcoming season.

Pantone’s 2014 color report commends the contrasts between 10 delicious colors that are the platform for creating a host of fashionable looks.

Placid Blue, Violet Tulip, and Hemlock are 3 pastels that correlate gracefully with the bold colors of Cayenne, Freesia, and Celosia Orange. Sand and Paloma represent the neutrals of the color scheme, while Radiant Orchid and Dazzling Blue are color components that serve as counterpoints to the neutral, pastel, and bold colors.

SHIRT, SKIRT & NECKLACE: BLUETIQUESHOES: DILLARDS

Jump Suits are the sister to last season’s popular romper trend. This elegant look can consist of a quarter length, full or sleeveless style. Sleek, polished, and a step apart from the well known business suit, designers are recommending that this staple be paired with a detailed blazer or complimentary statement jewels.

Boyfriend Jeans are back. This style of pant always seems to be right. The best part? This is a staple with which you can dress up or go causal. Pair with a bright floral blazer and kitten heels or a graphic T and embellished flats and you have two trends nailed my friend.

The cropped top is, well, getting even more cropped. But, don’t worry. As this may seem to be a risqué look to wear, combining this trend with a high-waisted bottom will exude the perfect combo of sexy and classy. Two things a woman should always be.

Tea-Length Skirts were a huge trend in 40’s fashion, but today’s “it” piece is being paired with the crop-top. The length is ideal for just about every occasion we can think of- special events, at the office, and even a Saturday spent shopping. On the opposite end of the spectrum of the previously trended mini-skirt, the tea-length exudes the style of a woman while adding modern elements and patterns. And, if you ask us, a little mystery in modesty always scores well.

ELEMENTSBold Logos. Designers are incorporating the “90’s bold logo” element in many pieces for the upcoming season. (We always knew that decade would come back with a bang.) Feel free to make your look loud with a logo or statement etched across your bag, shift shirt, or cigarette pant. Logos rule. Props if you snag a retro 90’s band shirt at a thrift shop.

Sporty Details. Bags, tops, and shoes are having a moment with athletic elements. The accents of mesh and retro letterman-style jackets are appearing everywhere. Instead of looking like you just left your spinning class, you will appear on top of your trend game with this intriguing approach to fashion.

Fringe was a huge element used on the Spring 2014 runway. Skirts, jackets, vests, and blouses are all pieces that are using this detail to make a statement. You will be able to find it just about anywhere. Don’t view this trend as an Indiana Jones throwback - think of it as classy flapper meets rustic Native American. You will have options.

Tribal touches. Embrace the vivacity and culture of tribal elements.. Grasp the fringe outbreak alongside fierce cut-outs and spicy patterns. Cotton blend dresses with these tribal touches will become your go-to cocktail party look.

Details, details, details! Jewels, intricate embroidery, sequins, and Rose Gold hues will be planted on a variety of upcoming pieces. Worried that all of the bling and details are too overplayed on a fitted blouse you come across? Don’t worry, snag it. You will be right on trend. As far as clothing pieces go, the more detail included, the more of a fashionista you’ll be.

THE FLUFF

Shoes you will lust over this Spring are lace-up booties and pointy toed pumps. Don’t feel like you can’t embrace last year’s wedges and embellished sandals though- they are still a huge shoe style that we love. Mules are hitting the fashion field hard this Spring. Basically the epitome of the woman’s perfect shoe, these slide on wedges are not only extremely comfortable, but easy to slip right on when you’re running five minutes behind. And, they are available in a variety of colors, textures, and chic patterns. Perfect.

Accessories. We’ve got good news for Spring accessory must-haves - just about everything you can think of goes! Soft satchels, oversized and cat-eye sun-glasses, detailed and minimalist clutches - every style and type of accessory is trending right now (which only means your wallet will love you and your options will be endless)!

As far as bags go, it is all about complimenting the occasion. Bucket bags work for weekend errands, while the clutch will accompany you, like the perfect date, to your dinner party. Designers are using all of these pieces, but combining the trending elements and prints that are current this Spring.

Jewelry is all about complimenting your look. Classical era statement jewels or bold bangles collaborate with whichever style scene you’re manifested in. The ears are being hosted as a big palette for accessories this season. Piling on the classic stud with ear cuffs provide an unique look to complete you with a trendy, modern approach.

Makeup. Highlighting a specific facial feature is essential. Playing up the eyes, brows, lips, and cheekbones serves to promote your natural beauty without overdoing it. Adding a pop of color is hot this Spring. Try a cobalt blue hue as a eyeshadow or eyeliner for a great contrast with your pastel shift dress.

“Don’t throw the past away. You might need it some rainy day. Dreams can come true again. When everything old is new again.” These lyrics, from the 1974 song by Peter Allen and Carole Bayer Sager, apply to a wide range of topics, not the least of which is the fashion industry. Innovations occur without a doubt in this creative field, however, old IS made new again with variations on a theme. Tell us a little about yourself. Where’s home? What are some of your passions outside photography? What’s one of the most interesting things you’ve ever done? I’m a freelance photographer based out of Louisville, KY. Believe it or not, music was a giant part of my life. I lived the anti-glamorous “rock star” lifestyle— ramen noodles, sleeping in vans—for about 8 years. Anti-glamorous as it was, I got to tour the nation and I, also, learned about life, people, and how to achieve what one hopes for. In my world, the hands you shake are better than the classes you take and I learned this as I toured around playing music.

Nowadays, music has taken a backseat to another creative adventure, a much easier and healthier venture. As for hobbies, I can’t really say I have any outside of music and photography. Everything I do outside of my work revolves back to my career. I live and breathe photography, cinematography, and design. When did you take up photography professionally? How did you first get involved in the kind of photography you now do? You have to go back to my teenage years when I first got into video, music and art. I’ve always been a huge movie fanatic. It was something about the escape and story I enjoyed so much. I was raised with a 8mm camera and would make my own “war” movies in my backyard growing up. I wanted to be Steven Spielberg. The creative side of me, I believe, I owe to my mother.

I’ve always had a great respect for photography, and next thing I knew, I would catch myself watching episode after episode of “America’s Next Top Model”. By 2007, I was designing flyers, album artwork, websites, and edited bands’ images. By 2010, I decided I wanted to take on graphic design full time and so I started inquiring about DSLR cameras. My life completely changed when I got my first DSLR camera (Nikon D5000) as a Christmas present. Let’s talk about a little about fashion now. When it comes to fashion shoots, what do you focus on, aim for? Who do you think has influenced your work?

Capturing a great fashion image takes a lot of teamwork. When I go into fashion shoots, it all starts with a vision, whether that vision comes from the creative director or myself. What’s important is to have a strong idea of what you want to capture. A fashion shoot team is always built on this initial vision. Personally, I love structure, especially statuesque structure. I like giving models enough room to breathe, but at the end of the day, all I want is a strong pose with a stable foundation. As long at the image maintains its energy, then I’ve done my job right. Some of my biggest influences include Annie Leibovitz and Miller Mobley—both are well-known celebrity advertising photographers that dabble in fashion. Does digital technology play a big role in your photography? If so, how? If not, why? I like to think I’m a technical guru when it comes to digital technology. I’ve even been hired to write articles for Fstoppers (fstoppers.com). In other words, technology plays a very large role in what I do. It’s a tool that is required to keep up with the imagery that is being produced around the world. Adobe Photoshop plays an essential role in what I do on a daily basis. From re-touching to color correction to compositing, like it or not, digital manipulation is a staple in commercial and fashion imagery today. I believe the camera is an extension of the eye, but digital manipulation can make or break a photograph. What goes into picking out a location/time/theme for a shoot? Scouting and pre-production is a critical piece to the puzzle. I will spend more time in the logistics of the photo shoot than actually shooting. Hours upon hours can be spent on coming up and creating a concept for an editorial, and sometimes it only takes 20 minutes of actual shooting to get the right image captured.

For me, pre-production is the most important aspect of a photo shoot. I need a creative story to be the foundation of my work. If there’s no story behind an image, it’s much harder to—for me—to translate anything into the final product. What do you believe makes or breaks

a professional photographer? With photography, having a creative mind is essential, yet I believe what can make or break a photographer is his or her ability to manage the business and marketing aspect of it. I’ve seen this happen with many photographers. They have great images and great ideas, they just don’t know how to market them.

On the other hand, I, also, believe photography is an industry that is very much all about connections. It’s important to put oneself out there. If you have talent and know the right people, then chances are you’re going to have a breakthrough. Tell us about your equipment. Do you have a favorite piece? Why? I don’t have a favorite piece of gear, but I have a “go to” setup. Behind great art there’s great inspiration. Where does yours come from? I inspire from many things: people, art, music, films, and life in general. When it comes to other photographers, it’s difficult to narrow it down, although I will admit that every time I look at my work I notice similarities with the work of Annie Leibovitz and Miller Mobley. Anything else you might want to add…? I feel as if my biggest accomplishment or best work is yet to come. However, I am very proud of the fact I’ve been able to strategically shoot for all of Louisville’s major publications - all in one month!

1. Prep the hair with a dry shampoo or messing cream for texture and grip.

2. Take a Horseshoe section in the fringe area and back comb. Twist at the end, push forward and secure with pin.

3. Take a section from the temples to the top of the head and secure with an elastic. On the last “loop” don’t pull the hair all the way through. Clip away.

4. Repeat for sections 2 and 3 on the center of the head, and then the nape. (You will now have 3 pony sections.)

5. Split the loop in each pony and pin to the head. Get creative! Twist pieces left hanging around the loops or enhance strands with hairspray and your fingers.

6. Detail your work with a medium to strong hold spray, finishing with a gloss spray for shine! This almost mohawk will catch everyone’s eye with its volume and detail. It’s “faux” easy!
