    6 DAY PROGRAM

Rising in front of San Pedro de Ataca-

ma is this rocky sentinel containingarchaeological remains: the Licanca-bur volcano, 5916 meters above sea

level, at the border between Chile andBolivia. From the summit, you can see

most of the Atacama salt ats and theDomeyko range.

The Licancabur or Town Above is themost beautiful volcano in the area. Forthe people of the Atacama Desert, itwas the most sacred mountain in the

whole region. Pilgrims would travelto it from distant places and wouldstay in the constructions built on its

slopes at 4600 meters above sea level. In its crater, priests would light large

bonres to mystically communicatewith the other high mountain sanctua-

ries in the region, on certain signicantdates, especially with the Quimal Hillsanctuary.

    NORTHEAST ROUTE

The classic route up the LicancaburVolcano is from the southwest edge

of Laguna Verde (4350 m.a.s.l.), at theeastern base of the Juriques Volcano, neighbouring Licancabur, in Bolivia.

    APPROACH

From the lagoon, the route is north bound, along the western shore, following

a jeep road, from here; it is possible to observe the ascent route. Afterwards, the route turns west and twists south, reaching up through a sandy ravine to thetown of Licancabur, 8 kilometres from the cone of the Licancabur Volcano and the

    Juriques Volcano.

    ASCENT

From the Bolivian hut, the trail towards the northeast slope of the Licancabur sets

    o. Here we nd the rst ruins at the base of the volcanic cone. The trail takes azigzag direction towards the summit, through loose scree at a 40-degree incline. At the end of the zigzag are large stones, where the trail at times becomes hard tond. You must continue southeast until reaching a false summit. From this point,

take the ridge on the northeast a few meters to the northeast edge of the crater, the highest point of the volcanic cone, in which is a beautiful lagoon. Here we cannd vestigial remains of Inca ruins. The view of the Atacama salt ats (Salar) and

the Andes mountain range is stunning.
