It was fantastic to see so many Home-owner’s around the resort for these days, particularly the younger crowd. Our Real Estate success to date has been strong, and it’s pleasing to see many of the new Homeowners joining us in making Kicking Horse a great destination resort. We hope to continue this success and as always are truly thankful to our Homeowner’s for promoting resort life. Our Real Estate brokerage officially changed it’s name to Canadian Rockies Realty and now incorporates Real Es-tate at both Fernie Alpine Resort and Kimberley Alpine Resort. We also look forward to the develop-ment of the Cedars this summer, with a show home in the works that will display all the assets of our newest resort development. With that said, we look forward to what the summer has in store for us. Whether you visit for a weekend or a season, there’s something for every-one, and rest assured our sales, mar-keting and events team will be working hard to ensure the upcoming summer season is another triumph. Some things Homeowner’s can look forward to this summer is the continu-ation of the Homeowner Benefits Card. (See Page 4)

Another great winter season has concluded and again we attribute its success in part to our Homeown-er's. So in this edition of Mountain Living, we take a look back on this wonder-ful winter and give thanks to all those who made it yet another memorable one. Though it was a milder winter, our Homeowners were not deterred and took advantage of the amazing events and programs that Kicking Horse had to offer. As a resort, we celebrated the suc-cess of new and old events. From the first ever BC Family Day to our customary events such as Wrangle the Chute and the Sunsplash Funk-fest.

We are also pleased to announce the return of the Homeowner Harvest Weekend, full of fun events and activi-ties for our Homeowner’s and their guests. We look forward to bringing you more detailed information on this exciting weekend in the not too dis-tant future. We encourage you to stay tuned for more of our exciting summer events! Though I run into many of you throughout the season, I can never thank you all enough for contributing to the success of Kicking Horse and truly displaying Mountain Living as a positive experience. I am ever grateful for the dedication and passion of our Homeowners, with this winter being no exception. I look forward to seeing you all again in the summer, thank you for a won-derful winter 2012/2013.

Mountain Closure Our Mountain Ops Team would like to pass along a friendly reminder to respect Mountain Closure during the shoulder season. Please be mindful that many hazards exist –line work, vehicle traffic, changing weather conditions –avalanche control could commence at any given time. Be sure to stay safe!

All 18 holes at The Golden Golf Club opened on April 26, along with the Golden Eagle Grill, The Golden Eagle Grill is open daily for lunch from 11:00am to 7:00pm. This summer, the Golden Eagle Grill boasts an exciting new menu for lunch and dinner, and full breakfasts available on weekends. Come and check out the best patio in town!

With the conclusion of the 2012/2013 winter, we are looking back at another great season at Kicking Horse. It was wonderful to see Homeowner’s partake in the events at Kicking Horse, including the Brand Ambassador Night, First Tracks Breakfast, Spring Fling and the monthly Après Ski (thanks to Lois Gar-diner and James Sprenger for organizing the very popular Après events). We would like to thank our Homeowners for the contribution to making this season another success-ful one, and for making the resort such a wonderful place to be! The Real Estate brokerage also experienced a good year with strong sales.

A LOOK BACK ON WINTER 2012/2013

Whether you were there for the delicious buffet or the amazing powder day, or both, the first tracks breakfast had something for everyone. Thanks to Marcus Molfenter and our Eagle’s Eye staff for providing a great spread and amazing service. Another big thanks goes out to Mike Rubenstien and the Mountain Ops and Safety team for providing our grooming report and making sure first tracks was safe for everyone. A final thank you must be said to all the Homeowners and guests who attended, you truly made it a delightful way to start the day!

A Look Back on Events, Maxime Cretin, Events Planner

As we switch gears into another exciting summer, I wanted to circle back on our amazing 12/13 winter production. One of our main goals this year was to implement activities targeted towards all the little wheels on resort, while also offering par-ents a fun alternative after 4:30pm. Our 8 sessions of Cooking with Chef Ryan over Christmas holidays and Family Day weekend were a big hit, bringing a touch of creativity that introduced a new direction for KHMR to follow. We hope to see more big smiley faces devouring piles of sweeties in future sessions! Our Craft nights, led by an extraordinary Guest Services Team turned out to be a great addition, challenging kids to show off their skills in a fun atmosphere. Re-turns were extremely positive! The annual Easter Egg Hunt brought to-gether more than 70 children energized to search for hidden goodies throughout the Learning Centre. Based on the previous two years success in this annual event, we are now planning for a giant hunt on mountain next year. So mark your calen-dars for 2014 Easter at KHMR! Also, we saw a record number of 8-12 year olds sign up for the legendary Slush Cup, bringing fresh new tricks to the pond. It is a fact … these youngsters have laid down the law here at Kicking Horse! I will finish up with the 1st edition of the Jeep Junior Freeski Series. It was incredi-ble to watch the 7-11 age categories scope out their lines in Crystal Bowl like real pro-riders. They challenged the conditions and impressed a cheering crowd of specta-tors watching below!

With almost 100 participants, the competition was ferocious and to-tally aligned with Resort of the Canadian Rockies (RCR) ongoing commitment to providing active and healthy pursuits for youth. Many parents and athletes from sister resorts in BC and Alberta were impressed by our resort’s appeal, promising to return next winter for some more turns with the family. Now, we look forward to preparing for the warm weather and anoth-er epic summer. Vivement l’été!

Grizzly Bear Refuge Update, Nicole Gagnon, GBR Wildlife Ranger For our resident grizzly bear—Boo—April 12 was indis-putably the best day of the year. At high noon he was re-leased from his over-wintering area into his much larger mountainside habitat. It was the first opportunity for him to explore his 20-acre domain since last October. After a few moments of indecision during which Boo paused to observe the assembled group of onlookers, he quickly got over his stage fright and sprinted the full width of his habitat in sheer exuberance. The night before had been cold so the snow was firm enough to support the 500-plus pound bear as he literally danced across its fro-zen surface. He skipped and pirouetted and somersaulted. He rolled on his back with all four paws waving skyward, initiating the weeks-long process of rubbing away his ex-cess winter fur. Boo pointed his snout into the breeze, filling his lungs with fresh air while sampling the myriad intoxicating smells of the surrounding subalpine wilderness. Soon, one particular scent got his attention. Boo methodically moved toward the spot where a special treat had been buried in the snow a few days before. This simulates the situation faced by Boo’s wild cousins as they search for avalanche-killed carrion after waking from their winter slumber. Boo quickly zeroed in on the spot and began digging in earnest. Within 12 minutes of leaving his den he had his prize. Boo sprawled on his stomach and began munching on the big slab of meat.

But on this day, freedom was more important than food, so Boo soon abandoned his meal to resume jogging throughout his habitat. He scampered up its steepest slope to a high vantage point from which he could survey his sur-roundings. A minute later he was sliding back down the steep snow on his stomach, reveling in the joy of move-ment. It looked like Boo would never slow down. However, after 112 days of sleep in his winter den, he wasn’t accustomed to so much activity and exertion. He soon tired and was ready for a nap. Boo wandered into the dense forest and disappeared from sight. Most likely he curled up at the base of a tall spruce tree, content with a full stomach and bliss-fully tired muscles. Who knows what thoughts passed through this grizzly bear’s mind as he drifted off to sleep? Yes, this was the best day of the year.

Boo’s awake and that means his friends are probably waking up too! This is a good time for reminders on how to be Bear Aware to ensure personal safety and safety in the community.

Garbage/Recyclables/Compost: •Never store garbage or recyclables outside, unless it is in an approved bear-proof container or bear-proof enclosure. •Do not put garbage, recyclables or compost curb-side un-til morning of pick-up. •It may only take one time to condition a bear to human garbage. Bird Feeders: •Do not use bird feeders in bear country. •As an alternative to hummingbird feeders, use bird baths or plant red or pink native flowers that are known to ap-peal to hummingbirds. Barbecues: •Burn barbecues clean immediately after use. •Store units indoors, if possible leave the propane tank out-side. •Always remove the grease can and store it indoors when not in use. •Do not leave any food unattended outside, the smell from barbecuing travels a long distance Pet Food: •Feed your pets indoors and store their food inside. •Do not leave dog bones lying around the yard. Fruit Trees/Berry Bushes: •Harvest fruits as soon as they ripen. •Remove fallen fruit from the ground daily. •Electric fence large orchards. •Plant non-fruit bearing trees/shrubs when landscaping.

BEAR AWARE!

Wilderness Tips

Camping, hiking, fishing and hunting often place you in a bear’s natural environment: •Do not camp where a fresh bear sign is found (i.e. scat, fresh diggings, claw marks on trees, tracks). •Pack all garbage out including all food scraps.

•Store all food and other attractants securely in your car or in a bear-proof food cache. •Stay in groups and make noise as you walk, avoid surprise encounters. If you encounter a bear: Remain calm. Think ahead. Your actions are the best defense against a bear attack.

Do not run: Bears can easily outrun humans. By run-ning you may trigger an attack. Pick up small children and when possible stay in a group. Back away slowly and speak softly.  

Give the bear space: Back away slowly and talk in a soft voice. Do not approach the bear or make eye contact.  

Leave the area or make a wide detour: If you cannot leave, wait until the bear moves out of the way and ensure that the bear has an escape route.  

If the bear rears up on its hind legs: It is curious and trying to see you or catch your scent better. It is not a sign of aggression. Back away slowly and talk softly.  Watch for aggressive behaviors: A bear may dis-play aggression by swinging its head from side to side, mak-ing vocalizations such as huffs, snorts, whoops, or moans, displaying teeth or claws; jaw popping; swatting at the ground; staring with eye contact; panting; or laying its. ears back. These behaviours usually indicate that the bear is stressed, acting defensively and asking for more space. At-tacks rarely follow but this is a warning to leave the area.
