WARLEGGAN is the fourth novel in Winston Graham's sweeping Poldark series. Set in 1792, Ross plunges into a highly speculative mining venture which threatens not only his family's financial security but also his turbulent marriage to Demelza. And of course we have Ross’s arch enemy George Warleggan one of a new class of in-dustrialists and bankers. It is said that Graham saw the name Warleggan on a sign post and considered it to have the right resonance to depict George’s character. Graham was born in Manchester in June 1908. His fa-ther, Albert Grime, was a prosperous tea importer and

grocer. When he was 17 years old, Winston moved to Perranporth where he lived for more than 30 years. He had wanted to be a writer from an early age and, following the death of his father, he was supported by his mother while he wrote novels at home in longhand and attempted to get them published. In September 1939, Graham married Jean Williamson, having first met her in 1926 when she was 13 years old. She often was known to help Graham with ideas for his books, and the character of Demelza, in his Poldark series, was based on her. Graham's daughter said, “Father was the author but my mother helped with the details because she was very observant. She saw everything and remembered it all." Jean died in 1992. He lived in Perranporth from 1925 until 1959, and briefly in the south of France during 1960, finally settling in East Sussex. In 1983, he was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire. Graham died on 10 July 2003 in London at the age of 95. Graham's first novel The House with the Stained Glass Windows was published in 1934. His first Poldark novel Ross Poldark was published in 1945 and was succeeded by a series of eleven further titles, the last of which was Bella Poldark, published in 2002. Graham was also an accom-plished author of suspense novels and, during the course of his life, wrote thirty-two novels (in addition to the twelve Poldark books). The first seven Poldark novels were adapted as a BBC television series broadcast in the UK between 1975 and 1977, which garnered audiences of about 14 million viewers. The current series have again brought the name “Warleggan” to the fore. Considering the size of our parish and population we do seem to receive well above our fair share of spotlight attention and visitors from near and far. One visitor to the Church, as evidenced by the Visitors’ Book, was Winston Graham himself with his wife Jean and friends from Sussex on 10th June 1982.

WEEKLY VIEWS FROM THE FIELD “life, red in tooth & claw”

There may be nothing finer than the smell of damp leaves on an Au-tumn morning walk, with a faithful furry friend at your side. (We refer to our dogs, but feel free to be creative with hairy walking companions, we rule out no species) After a busy spring lambing, slipping seamlessly into long days and late nights in the garden, lots of summer fruit picking, and the never ending surprise jobs that present themselves to farmers, Sep-tember can be a welcome relief. Chance to draw breath, reflect on the years successes, put the blunders, mistakes and failures behind us, make plans for next year. Our ram is starting to pace the fence line in anticipation of being reunit-ed with his flock of girlfriends. Last year we thought he was going to eat his way through a hedge in order to start the breeding season, and he looks equally enthusiastic this year. There has already been some flirting going on from either side of the stock netting. Sheep contraception in the form of a good fence topped with barbed wire, the original barrier method. Unfortunately for our woolly Lothario, we will try to restrain his amorous intentions until the end of October. One of our favourite outings in the farming calender occured this week: Piglet Shopping. Our local Piglet Store is a farm near Lerryn. We roll up with the trailer and park near the pen. The group of pigs, which includes mums, babies, and even a couple of retired grannies, are given some food. Then it's up to us to jump in and choose our new porkers. A firm grasp around the back legs is essential, and a quick exit with a wrig-gling, squeaking piglet. This is repeated till we have completed our pur-chases. It really is the pinnacle of all supermarket self-checkout experi-ences. Next time you're in Morissons wrestling your shopping into your bag-for-life, just be glad it's not a piglet.

MOUNT CHAPEL The Harvest Festival weekend was indeed glorious and well supported; the chapel was filled with Autumn flowers and produce including a har-vest loaf on which sat a field mouse to complete the picture. All services were well attended and the Monday saw brisk bidding at the Auction conducted by Robert Jory (many thanks to Rob for his auctioneering skills) the resultant monies raised going to much needed chapel funds. Forthcoming dates for your diaries :- 3rd December Christmas Fayre (held in the Chapel) with the usual cake stall/ pasties/ tea / coffee for sale. A time for purchasing those Christmas gifts! Christmas service 18th December at 11.00am—preacher Mrs Anita Nicholson. First Sunday of each month—Messy Church. See notice board. NB : No Christmas Day service at the Chapel but you are welcome to join in the 9.30am service at St Bartholomew’s for Holy Communion.

MACMILLAN CAKE STALL £76 was raised at the recent cake stall at Village Greens. Thanks to all who contributed.

MESSAGE OF THANKS FROM CLAIRE PENTER … (You may remember back in June Mary was asking for sponsorship for her daughter-in-law Claire who was swimming across Lake Windermere for Cancer Research) “To everyone who so kindly sponsored my swim …

THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR GENEROSITY I’m sad to tell you that poor Anna (Claire’s friend) passed away on Sun-day night—finally free from the constant fight that has been her life for the last 3½ years. Your money will help her husband, Dan, in his desire to stay in their family home, and in making sure their 3 children contin-ue to live life as he and Anna wanted. We raised a total of £850, the majority of which will go to them. The rest to Cancer Research in the hope that new treatments will allow more people to survive this terrible disease. With love to you all and thanks. Claire X”

CHURCH NEWS The final sum raised from the Garden Party / Band Concert was £716, ra-ther surprising considering the change of venue because of the weather. Thank you to everyone who supported the event. Thank you also to all who came to the Harvest Songs of Praise and to the auction the following day. Your generosity allowed us to send £202 to the Friends of Mwanhala & Urambo in Tanzania for their work in hospitals and schools. A recent published list of ancient buildings considered at risk included Warleggan Church. We are hoping that this will have a favourable impact on our application for grants. Our first application failed, though we were tantalisingly near the top of the list! On Thursday 10th November at St Cleer Church at 7.30pm there is the li-censing of the Revd Becca Bell as Priest in Charge of St Cleer, St Neot and Warleggan. This represents a re-grouping of parishes by the Diocese in or-der to solve its man / woman-power problems. Philip of course remains as Curate in Charge of St Neot and Warleggan. On Saturday 26th November 10am till noon we will be holding our Advent Bazaar in the Jubilee Hall. Anything saleable—or edible—will be most gratefully received; plus the usual stalls, raffle, etc. and pasties. It is our turn to host the United Parish Carol Service and it will take place on Tuesday 13th December at 7pm followed by mincepies, etc. at Chykest hosted by the Young Farmers. On Christmas Eve there will be a Candlelight Service of Carols followed by mulled wine and mincepies at Chykest. All welcome. Pat Interestingly, a few weeks ago at the beginning of October, at a Morning Prayer, we had a visit from a retired clergyman and his wife from Sefton, Liverpool who were on holiday staying at Trevorder. I absorbed useless pieces of information and after the service we were chatting and he went on to say that, as far as he was aware all churches whose patron saint is St Bartholomew are built 13o N of E. He must have seen me look at him somewhat quizzically, as he whipped out his mobile phone and brought up a compass on the screen. Guess what? St Bartholomew’s Warleggan sits 13o N of E!! My mission in life is to check this out whenever I happen across a St Bartholomew’s church. Gill
