Mount Isa Airport services the mining community as well as creating a gateway to North West Queensland.

MOUNT ISA AIRPORT HELPING KIDSMount Isa Airport is proud to be a sponsor of Bush Children’s Mount Isa branch, an initiative also supported by the North Queensland Toyota Cowboys NRL team. The North Queensland Toyota Cowboys and the Royal Queensland Bush Children’s Health Scheme Mount Isa branch joined forces in 2008 to revive the operations of the local children’s health and community services provider. Mount Isa Airport joined the cause in 2009.

The centre is now fully operational and staffed to provide vital health and community services – including speech pathology, psychology and occupational therapy – for children in Mount Isa and the surrounding area.

Bush Children offers country families and their children support that would not ordinarily be available to them and without access to these services, families would be forced to undertake extensive travel and/or relocate their families to an urban centre that could support the needs of their children.

MOUNT ISA AIRPORT AND THE COMMUNITYGeographically located in such a remote area, Mount Isa Airport is an intrinsic part of the community and actively participates in key community-based initiatives.

Prevent with Antioxidants

I f you or someone you know is working in the mining industry, you will no doubt be aware of the certain health risks that come with the job. Long

term exposure to fuels, reagents, solvents, detergents, chemicals, coal dust, silica dust, diesel, asbestos, welding fumes, poisonous plants, and metal dust, can have serious negative health impacts. Unlike acute injury, symptoms of toxicity can sometimes take years to surface, and can also present differently in different people. Toxicity might first present as fatigue, headaches, sinus infections or mood changes. If ignored, it could present as disease in the lungs, skin or digestive tract. Worse still, toxicity may lead to degenerative chronic diseases like cancer.

On a cellular level, these toxic substances promote free radicals which cause cellular stress, severe oxidative damage and cell death, resulting in a state of sub-health and disease.

But here’s the good news; you can counter a good deal of this oxidation by taking antioxidants.

Antioxidants are nature’s weapon against free radicals. If it’s inevitable that you will be in contact with toxic substances, which for most of the population this is the case, at least you can protect yourself with a daily dose of antioxidants. Not only do they counteract the harmful effects of free radicals, but they are anti-aging, prevent macular degeneration, inflammation, cholesterol build-up, and amongst many other things, can even help prevent a hangover!

Here’s my top 5 ways to combat free radical damage:

1. Take a potent antioxidant supplement daily like ACAI. This Amazonian berry powder makes a delicious smoothie add in or addition to your breakfast cereal.

2. Make your plate colourful! Different coloured fruits and veg contain different antioxidants, so mix it up! Fresh juices are also a good way to keep up your fruit and veg intake. If you have access, organic is best.

3. Stay hydrated with filtered water. 1.5-2L a day minimum, and more for those who sweat a lot.

4. Add organic herbs and spices to your cooking. Turmeric, cloves and rosemary are all super charged with antioxidants.

Deep breathing from your diaphragm actually reduces oxidative damage, research shows. Dedicate a few minutes as you wake up each morning to breathing deeply. Fill your lungs with air, right to the bottom lobes, and watch your belly rise and fall for up to 10 breaths. n

CSI:I f you’re a fan of the television show CSI

you’re going to want to get to the Gold Coast as it exclusively hosts CSI: The

Experience’s first ever visit to Australia, following its international triumphs.

The interactive exhibition is based on the multi award winning and long running hit television crime drama series CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. CSI: The Experience exhibition invites visitors to assume the role of a forensic detective to solve cases using scientific principles and techniques currently in use today and as seen on the

CSI television programs.

From DNA and firearms analysis to forensic anthropology and toxicology, visitors will have the opportunity to actively engage in a new form of interactive and experiential learning.

Designed for visitors 11 years of age and older, the 1,110 square-metre exhibition was developed in consultation with 175 forensic science experts and guides visitors through an intriguing process that closely copies the realities of crime scene investigation.

Upon entering the exhibition, the newly hired ‘detectives’ are inducted into the realm of forensic science through a video introduction by Anthony E. Zuiker, the creator and executive producer of the CSI television series. Real-life forensic scientist Ron Singer then briefly summarises the science to be

found in the exhibit before CSI’s lead investigator ‘Gil Grissom’ outlines

his role as supervisor for the new ‘recruits’

and as usual

recommends they ‘follow the evidence’ to their eventual conclusion.

The detectives then travel through one of three intricately constructed ‘crime scenes’ to identify and record evidence.

State-of-the-art ‘crime labs’ assist them to piece together evidence from the ‘crime scene’ whilst an ‘autopsy’ room explains the process of pathology analysis.

With guidance in the form of video messages from the much loved past and present characters from the television show, the detectives will be invited to present their findings to team supervisor ‘Gil Grissom’ in his ‘office’ in the hopes of solving the case. Successful detectives are rewarded with a personalised crime scene diploma upon cracking the case they have been assigned.

Originally developed by the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History with a grant from The National Science Foundation (NSF), CSI: The Experience has been exhibited across the United States, Europe, and Asia with the Surfers Paradise exhibition being the first foray into Oceania.

Chilli Con CarneIngredients (serves 4)2 teaspoons olive oil 500g lean beef mince 1 large brown onion, finely chopped 1 large red or green capsicum, chopped 2 garlic cloves, crushed 1 long red chilli, chopped 2 tablespoons cumin 2 tablespoons paprika1 can diced tomatoes 1 can red kidney beans, drained, rinsed

MethodHeat oil in a large saucepan over medium heat.

Add mince. Cook, stirring and breaking up mince, for 15 minutes or until browned.

Add onions, capsicums, garlic and

chopped chilli. Cook for 6 minutes or

until vegetables are soft. Add cumin and

paprika. Cook, stirring, until fragrant.

Add tomatoes and 1/2 cup cold water.

Bring to the boil. Reduce heat to simmer,

partially covered, for 30 minutes or until

sauce has reduced slightly.

Add beans. Increase heat back to medium.

Cook for 15 minutes or until beans are

heated through and sauce has thickened.

ServeServe with rice or baked potato topped

with sour cream, cheese and chopped

shallots.


Garlic Prawn FettucciniIngredients (serves 4)2 teaspoons olive oil 300g raw peeled prawns2 garlic cloves, crushed375g dried pasta, fettuccini300ml pure cream4 shallots, chopped½ teaspoon salt½ teaspoon pepper

MethodCook pasta and drain.

In a separate saucepan, heat oil over medium heat.

Add prawns. Cook for 3 minutes.

Add garlic and cook for a further 30 seconds.

Add cream, shallots, salt and pepper and cook until simmering.

Add pasta and mix through sauce until totally covered.

ServeServe with grated parmesan cheese

Vegetarian Fried RiceIngredients (serves 4)1 cup long grain white rice 2 teaspoons vegetable oil 2 shallots, trimmed, finely sliced 1 carrot, peeled and grated 2 eggs 1/2 cup frozen peas, thawed 2 tablespoons soy sauce

MethodCook the rice in a large saucepan of boiling water for 12 to 14 minutes or until tender. Drain and leave to cool.

Lightly beat eggs in a small bowl with a whisk or a fork. Heat oil in non-stick wok or large frying pan over medium heat. Add eggs and swirl over base to form an omelette. Cook for 2 minutes, turn over and then cook for another 2 minutes until set. Transfer to a chopping board, set aside to cool slightly and then cut into strips.

Back to the frypan, add carrot and stir fry for 1 minute. Add shallots, peas and rice. Cook, stirring, for 3 to 4 minutes. Add egg and soy sauce and stir until heated through.

Serve immediately. n

Making its global debut as the Chevrolet Trailblazer, Holden’s latest rugged SUV offering has broken

cover at the Dubai International Motor Show and will arrive in Australia as the all-new Holden Colorado 7 making it the first heavy-duty off-roader SUV to wear a Holden badge in almost a decade.

Due in Australia in the first quarter of 2013, the Colorado 7 will bear a close resemblance to the imposing show car when it enters production next year.

Emergency Department nurse Krystle Absolon, 27, has been about as far as possible from her normal job at Townsville Hospital, but she’ll be home soon.

The Army Reserve signaller has been on a four-month deployment to the Solomon Islands as part of the 15-nation Regional Assistance Mission to the Solomon Islands (RAMSI).

Krystle is a radio operator at the RAMSI headquarters near Honiara and responsible for establishing and maintaining communications for the deployed force.

Her ‘stand-out moment’ happened in the early hours of 12th March when the order went out to evacuate the camp because of a potential tsunami.

“We got the order to evacuate in 10 minutes — in the pouring rain and at night,” she said.

“So with our personal gear and rifles and radio equipment we headed for the hills.

“With everyone working together it took us just 20 minutes to get to a secure location where we re-established communications with all our soldiers, and back to Australia.”

Krystle said it was great to be finally able to do the job she trained for.

“Ensuring Australia’s borders are strong and helping our neighbours in need is all very humbling,” she said. “I am very proud to be Australian — and more aware than ever of things I took for granted like women’s rights, education, clean water and health care.”

Krystle said she had made friends for life on the deployment, but she is still looking forward to getting home to her family in Cairns and Townsville.

She attended Trinity Bay High School in Cairns and did her Bachelor of Nursing Science degree at James Cook University, Townsville.

All reservists are volunteers and have to volunteer again to serve overseas. They can also contribute to security at major events within Australia. Their civilian bosses receive a financial contribution to offset their absence on military duty.

One of the biggest health issues facing modern miners is the risk of developing chronic illnesses type 2 diabetes or heart disease, both linked to an inactive lifestyle and the

sedentary nature of the job. In July this year, Diabetes Queensland turned its focus to the

mining sector during National Diabetes Week in an attempt to raise awareness of type 2 diabetes and its debilitating impact on sufferers.

Type 2 diabetes is directly linked to obesity and has many long term health complications including eye disease, kidney disease and nerve damage as well the number one killer in Australia – heart disease.

For this reason, dust and fine particle solutions company Reynolds Soils Technologies (RST) is on a mission to raise awareness of these illnesses affecting the mining industry – and are urging others to follow.

With technical and development director David Handel at the helm, the Gold Coast based company frequently enters national cycling initiatives aimed at raising awareness and encouraging others in the industry to ‘get on yer bike’ for good health’s sake.

RST’s decision to enter a team in this year’s HTM Cycle Challenge, a 100km bike ride from Brisbane to Gold Coast, came after Diabetes Queensland released new figures revealing three quarters of Australian miners are currently overweight and at risk of type 2 diabetes.

“Many miners are at risk of type 2 diabetes or heart disease because of the nature of their jobs,” Mr Handel said. “They are often posted to remote areas, work long hours and are away from family and friends who would normally support and encourage a healthy lifestyle.

“However these chronic illnesses are easily preventable by eating well, maintaining a healthy lifestyle and being psychically active.”

A fter my first trip to Port Douglas back in 2008, I knew I was in for a treat but I have to admit I did consider the thought

that perhaps I’d seen all there was to see… I couldn’t have been more wrong.

Stepping out of the plane in Cairns, that familiar rainforest smell hit me just as hard as it did the first time. It’s like walking into a greenhouse – earthy and moist.

The drive from Cairns to Port Douglas is just over an hour, and once you reach the road running along the coast, it’s an absolutely beautiful and scenic trip.

HEAR the sound of nature Once settled into our hotel at Oaks Lagoons, a 5 minute drive from the centre of town, our first outing was to the beautiful Daintree Eco Lodge & Spa. As we walked through the resort, everything looked as though it has slowly been reclaimed by nature nestled well in amongst the environment. Each rainforest tree house will have you feeling as though you’ve wandered into the home of Tarzan, as the organic design creates a warm and rustic feel. Walking down toward the Julaymba Restaurant on the wooden

walkways through the forest, it’s easy to see why the accommodation dwellings are called tree houses, some perched many metres high above the ground.

For the wine, I personally recommend the Shannonvale Dry Mango Wine, locally made and an incredibly interesting mix of flavours. I expected a sweet variety so wasn’t too keen at first, but when the friendly waitress assured me it wasn’t what I would anticipate I was pleasantly surprised to taste almost nutty, dry qualities.

A special mention goes to the rainforest salad: riberries, munthari, rosella flowers, quandong and macadamia nuts combined with lettuce, cherry tomatoes, red onion, gold capsicum and cucumber dressed with lemon myrtle vinigarette. What a taste sensation!

SMELL the smoke of flamesThat evening, we were off to Flames of the Forest – now this I had done before, and clearly remember how amazing it was yet I wasn’t at all deterred by the fact. On the contrary, I was so excited to be experiencing it again.

As we hopped off the Flames of the Forest bus which picks you up directly from the front

of your accommodation, we walked through to the rainforest, the sounds and sights leaving us in awe. The main dining area is under a massive black silk canopy highlighted by crystal and bud light chandeliers.

The surroundings are simply magical and at one point, you’re asked for a moment of silence to truly appreciate the extraordinary surroundings.

TOUCH wildlifeThe next morning, a delicious buffet breakfast awaited us at the Wildlife Habitat Port Douglas – and it turned out we were going to be having breakfast with a few friends. In the Wetlands Restaurant, you can have Breakfast with the Birds amongst galahs, cockatoos, lorikeets and more as they’re free to roam inside the restaurant area (the food is kept separately of course).

From 8am to 10.30am daily, watch as the carers feed the birds and give informative talks on each species – there are some very colourful characters to meet.

SEE underwater After breakfast, we were setting sail on the Quicksilver Outer Barrier Reef Tour – a full day tour taking you out to the Great Barrier Reef and a large stable platform. The largest on the reef, it provides a great experience whatever the weather.

While I had snorkelled in Port Douglas before – and just for the record, it’s one of the best spots I’ve ever done so – I had never given scuba diving a go as I don’t have a certificate. So imagine my surprised when I learned on the way out to the reef that it was an option on this cruise with their introductory dive – and they organised a videographer to come along as well so our dive was well captured.

After a 30 minute brief from the highly qualified dive instructors covering all of the safety requirements, we were ready to head metres underwater! As we stocked up on all our gear and as the heavy oxygen tank was strapped on, I was left wondering how on earth it wasn’t going to sink right the bottom – of course in all my excitement I’d forgotten it would be weightless underwater.

As we descended, it was truly liberating not needing to come up for air and after only a couple of minutes I had no need to focus on my breathing anymore – it was effortless.

Butterfly fish, parrot fish, clown fish, angel fish and many more that I didn’t recognise, the fact that we didn’t need to linger close to the surface only made the experience more absorbing.

TASTE amazing gastronomic delightsOn the final evening of our stay, we dined at the Sheraton Mirage – the crème de la crème of Port Douglas resorts. Of course, we were well aware of the property’s highest standards, so I have to admit I was expecting something special when it came to the meal. And I can tell you, they exceeded my expectations with flying colours.

My personal favourite was the macadamia nut crusted fillet of barramundi on candied sweet potato, broccolini and beetroot glaze.

When it comes to the property itself, from the moment you step inside to the grand lobby, you’ll be in awe at the magnificent interior design and majestic feel of the place.

Scattered with gorgeous antiques, it’s also the only resort with direct beach access (to Four Mile Beach none the less!) and I can guarantee nothing compares to the feeling of following the trail of lights down to the beachside whilst sipping on your delicious cocktail!

Oh and did I mention the five acres of saltwater lagoons? It was truly a sensational note to finish my Port Douglas trip on and

once again, I’d had the time of my life. Although, my mind does tend to question – what more will I experience next time? I have a gut feeling I still haven’t done all there is to do in Port Douglas. Experience the magic for yourself. n

for flight delaysWhile records show that most flights will take off as

scheduled, unexpected events sometimes arise to disrupt normal flight patterns throughout the world.

Student Flights has scoured the archives to compile a list of the most unusual reasons that have been blamed for recent flights delays or cancellations.

1. Where’s my pilot?Recently, the Times of India reported that two Air India flights had to be cancelled at Chennai airport after the airline's pilots didn't turn up for duty.

One pilot reportedly refused to fly because he had completed his shift, while the replacement did not show.

2. Here kitty, kittyIn December last year, a cheetah delayed a Qantas domestic flight in Australia. Handlers were reportedly concerned about the pallet being used to transport the big cat, named Tokoloshe, and called for reinforcement.

This was probably a smart move – in October 2008, a cheetah managed to escape from its cage in the cargo hold of a Delta domestic flight. Experts were called in and the cheetah (not to mention the baggage handler) was saved.

3. Snakes on a planeLife imitated art in April 2009, when Australia had its very own “snakes on a plane” incident when four baby pythons managing to escape from their cage.

Two Qantas domestic flights were cancelled as a result.

4. Otters on the looseNot to be outdone, two sea otters escaped from their cage on a Continental domestic flight in the United States in December 2009. In this case, the otters made their way out of the cargo hold and on to the runway, delaying the flight by 80mins.

5. Lovesick turtlesIn June this year, an annual display of “turtle romance” temporarily disrupted normal services at New York’s JFK airport.

Each year, the turtles reportedly make a slow overland trek across the airport’s runways en-route to their breeding grounds.

6. Broken toiletsToilet-related concerns have also grounded their share of flights.

In August, a Delta Airlines flight in the US made an emergency landing because of an overflowing toilet. The incident attracted additional headlines after a high profile passenger, former Guns n' Roses guitarist Slash, used social media to share the story with the world.

7. PipigateIn August, French actor Gerard Depardieu was thrown off a flight from Paris to Dublin after he allegedly urinated on the plane’s floor.

8. People powerIn November 2010, Ryanair’s flight schedule was disrupted after more than 100 angry customers refused to leave the plane after it was

diverted to Belgium, rather than its intended destination in Northern France.

9. UFOs or simply a bad smell?Last month, several US websites carried a story claiming that UFO sightings prompted the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to temporarily close air space over New York. According to the FAA, a gas-like smell promoted the closure.

10. Airspace violators – Lawnchair LarryOne of the most unusual disruptions to flight schedules occurred in the United States almost 30 years ago when Lawrence Richard Walters literally “floated” into Los Angeles International Airport airspace.

In 1982, the truck driver, who became known as “Lawnchair Larry”, caught a bird’s eye view of LA from the comfort of a patio chair that was attached to 45 helium weather balloons.

Larry reached an altitude in excess of 4,000 metres.Fortunately, Larry’s flight ended safely after his balloon eventually

lost altitude and became tangled in wires, which caused a black-out in parts of Long Beach. n

Why is financial certainty so important? The reality is that very few Australians (less than 5 per cent) retire with an annual income of more than $50,000. Most people fail to maintain or improve their lifestyle when they actually have the time to enjoy themselves. How do you define financial certainty? When you retire, owning your own home and having an income of $100,000 per year. This gives you the flexibility to travel, play golf, support your family and all those other fun activities.

So, how do miners get financial certainty? The majority of miners earn better than average incomes. If you are earning over $80,000 and have a reasonable amount of equity in your home, you are in a great position to purchase an investment property.

Over time your personal and financial situation changes. Your priorities shift and important things you worked hard at getting right the first time no longer appear to meet your needs.

Home loans are a classic example. A mortgage you signed up for five years ago, more than likely doesn’t take into account your circumstances today, and some home loan packages even reduce or completely eliminate discounts as your mortgage balance decreases.

Refinancing may be a solution to getting you a better overall deal. There are many offers out there and it pays to do your homework.

Here are a few things to consider when thinking about refinancing your home loan.

Calculate the total cost of switching. Look at your loan documents to see if you are obligated to pay any fees or charges under your existing home loan contract for early termination.

A lower interest rate might be enticing, but ensure you ask about all the fees and charges involved in taking out a new home loan. View these in conjunction with any costs you would incur with exiting your existing home loan contract to get the full picture.

Consider your long term needs and ask yourself if refinancing now will impact on any changes you anticipate in the future. Above all you want to make sure any new deal leaves you better off than before you commit.

Ask your credit union or bank for a home loan health check if you think your current home loan may no longer be meeting your needs. n

corridor south west of Brisbane, is on the fast-track and it isn’t just the new rail line that has investors and owner-occupiers taking a fresh look at the booming location.

Major work is now underway on the rail line extension and two new stations that will extend the line from Richlands to Springfield Lakes and the Orion shopping centre at Springfield Central. The project has been brought forward by two years to 2013 providing commuters with another easy option for transport into Brisbane.

Lend Lease Project Director for Springfield Lakes, Ian Murray said Springfield Lakes was ideally positioned 28 kilometres from Brisbane while being conveniently linked to Brisbane’s International Airport by the Gateway motorway and also connected to the Gold Coast via the M1.

“In addition there are 20 kilometres of biking and walking tracks for those who prefer to stay dry.

Boarding School...

Last issue, I discussed the future of boarding schools and the many options that parents have in these

current times. This issue, I’m going to delve into why parents might consider sending their child to a boarding school in the first place.

A boarding school provides a real community for those within. The opportunity to be a part of a group is one we all crave and when young people live together, they develop excellent relationships with those others in the community. It is often said that boarders develop ‘friends for life’, but this is never more evident than at school reunions when those who boarded together share their memories of the good times, and sometimes also the bad times, of their life at school.

There is no better structure for our young people in which to build their social skilling. With the changing types of boys and girls becoming boarders with the ever decreasing rural population, the single

parent families, the working parents, the kids out of control, and those looking for the status of being a boarder amongst others pose many challenges, but the routines and structures provided by our boarding schools are second to none.

Boarding house staff are optimistic

about the possibility that happiness will take place in the boarding house in spite of occasional setbacks or failures. Under the guidance of such house staff, boarders get the feeling that success is possible and those goals of learning can be obtained. Good communication, cohesiveness, and morale are all causes and effects of positive group activity.

Boarding schools teach the students living within them a mixture of independence and dependence while they are away at school. Parents should not expect the child they sent away to be the same person when they return after two, three or more years in their boarding houses. They will most likely have become a young adult – hopefully an independent thinker who shows manners and self acceptance, but certainly one who can stand on their own two feet and look after themselves. n
