MOUNT ISA AIRPORT

UPDATESLocated in the heart of one of

the world’s most significant multi-mineral deposits,

Mount Isa is the mining capital of North Queensland. In fact, the wider Mount Isa mineral province is a major source of the world’s lead, zinc, silver and copper and home to one of the world’s largest underground mines. Mount Isa Airport services the mining community as well as creating a gateway to North West Queensland.

MOUNT ISA AIRPORT HELPING KIDSMount Isa Airport is proud to be a sponsor of Bush Children’s Mount Isa branch, an initiative also supported by the North Queensland Toyota Cowboys NRL team. The North Queensland Toyota Cowboys and the Royal Queensland Bush Children’s Health Scheme Mount Isa branch joined forces in 2008 to revive the operations of the local children’s health and community services provider. Mount Isa Airport joined the cause in 2009.

The centre is now fully operational and staffed to provide vital health and community services – including speech pathology, psychology and occupational therapy – for children in Mount Isa and the surrounding area.

Bush Children offers country families and their children support that would not ordinarily be available to them and without access to these services, families would be forced to undertake extensive travel and/or relocate their families to an urban centre that could support the needs of their children.

MOUNT ISA AIRPORT AND THE COMMUNITYGeographically located in such a remote area, Mount Isa Airport is an intrinsic part of the community and actively participates in key community-based initiatives.

Prevent Wear and Tearin your Joints!

Hard work, long hours and heavy lifting means that joint pain as you age is inevitable, right? Not necessarily! Take some steps now and

prevent osteoarthritis in the future. There are many types of arthritis, but osteoarthritis

refers to wear and tear in your joints. It involves the deterioration of joint cartilage, the rubbery tissue at the ends of bones that allows for smooth movement and shock-absorption. When cartilage erodes, the result is generally pain, loss of motion, and in many cases even disability and a severe disturbance to your daily life.

It’s becoming more common knowledge now that osteoarthritis will flare up if your body is acidic. You can test your saliva on some pH papers found in health food stores and chemists, and it should read 7. Anything under 7 means you are probably acidic. Acidity equals inflammation. What makes your body acidic? A poor diet, lots of stress, toxin exposure, a heavy consumption of sugars, white breads, red meat and alcohol, plus dehydration and being overweight are common causes.

BY NATUROPATH, NEREDA WILLS

Try some of these ideas for keeping your joints healthy:

• Squeeze ½ a lemon in warm water and drink every morning before breakfast. This is an age old remedy for alkalizing your body, improving your digestion, liver function and immune system.• Increase anti-inflammatory foods like oily fish twice a week, blueberries and pineapple three times a week, and flaxseed oil daily. Swap white breads for wholemeal, and snack on nuts and seeds instead of chips and chocolate.• The spices turmeric and ginger are powerful remedies for joint pain relief and as an anti- inflammatory. They are available in tablet form and also work as a preventative remedy.• Keep your muscles strong and flexible. Combine weight bearing exercises with stretching. Simple leg, back and arm warm up stretches for 10mins before you work can be enough.• Take glucosamine and chondroitin supplements. They are a natural component of cartilage and will keep your joints lubricated and able to absorb shock.• Stay hydrated! Water makes up 70 per cent of the cartilage in joints and plays a major role in the lubrication and shock absorbing properties of healthy joints. 1.5 to 2 litres of filtered water daily is best.• Daily exposure to sunshine before 10am or after 3pm on unprotected skin (but make sure you don’t get burnt!). n

1. Don’t assume your life is tougher than the person who’s away/at home. It’s natural to feel this way but getting into a competition about it all won’t help your relationship.

2. Show a little enthusiasm when you’re reunited. Yes, this takes an effort sometimes, especially when you’ve had a bad day or been flying for hours to get back home – but the rewards can be big. 3. To help your children cope, never talk about Mum/Dad ‘going away’ or ‘leaving’. It should always be Mum/Dad is ‘going to work’. They’re just words, but children take things very literally.

4. When you are home with the kids, work together to make a special bracelet, card, book or other object to act as a reminder of your bond. Something pocket-sized is great because it can be carried around and treasured every day.

5. Start out with a team plan. What do you want to achieve personally and professionally? If you’re part of a united team with very clear goals, this can be your focus when times get tough.

6. Agree on a realistic list of jobs that need doing around the house on the days you’re together – and then write them down. This cuts out the need for nagging and arguments about being nagged.

7. Don’t organise a massive amount of social activities for the time you’re together. Some couples have a rule of just one catch-up with friends or family over the break at home.

8. Talk about any problems that arise as a symptom of the lifestyle, rather than as a relationship problem. This will help you tackle issues together as a team, rather than thinking there is ‘something wrong’ with your relationship or either one of you.

9. Differing libidos challenge most long-term relationships. For couples who often live and work apart, there’s the added pressure of separation. It’s important to talk openly and honestly about your satisfaction with your sex life.

10. If phone contact isn’t possible, get clever about staying connected: hide little love notes in the suitcase/around the house; read the same book or watch the same DVD as your partner; write a special note to each other for every day you’re apart – to be opened at the same time each day.

Project Management

I f you’re having trouble in your relationship, you’re not alone. The battle for marriage is on as half of American marriages, 40 per cent of Australian unions and a third of Canadian and

New Zealand nuptials end in divorce. It’s scary that Australia has one of the highest divorce rates in the world.

Each year, around 50,000 people get divorced – and just under half of those divorces involve children. Marriage breakdowns cost the nation up to $6 billion each year.

In Japan, the divorce rate has risen by 26.5 per cent in 10 years. In China, the number of divorces has been steadily rising since 1980 when the figure was just 341,000; in 2007 that figure was about 1.4 million.

Modern relationships just aren’t working. Why? What was good enough for our parents doesn’t seem to be good enough for us. We are no longer willing to make the enormous personal sacrifices that our parents and grandparents made.

We demand (and deserve) lasting happiness, intimacy and passion with a single partner and if we don’t get it, we are prepared to sacrifice the relationship – personal fulfilment is now more important than the family unit.

So what’s the solution? It’s not divorce, separation or self-sacrifice. The answer lies in learning to create relationships that support our personal fulfilment. There is nothing wrong with wanting more than our parents did.

The truth is times have changed and our values have changed with them. The new problems we are facing are not symptoms of failure, but the result of the evolution of our society.

Our changing values have served us well, but they do pose some new problems. When both partners are unhappy, the

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN RELATIONSHIPS THAT WORK AND THOSE THAT DON’T IS HOW WELL WE DEAL WITH THE CHALLENGES WE FACE TOGETHER

www.inflightmagazine.com.au Issue 18 13

Page 14: Mount Isa Airport Magazine Issue 18

relationship they have cannot be fulfilling.

The statistics say it all: one in five marriages

end in divorce within five years, and more than

one in three end within 20 years. More often than

not, divorce (or break up) is the result of one or

both partners panicking.

When we do not have the skills, the support,

or sometimes the maturity to push through a layer

of difficulty (which could lead to considerable

growth), we abandon ship.

This decision is often encouraged by the

belief that “if I could just find the right partner,

everything would be wonderful”. While this

concept is certainly good to pursue as an ideal,

it’s often flawed because it’s the same “us” that

we take wherever we go.

The “panic and abandon” mentality often does

more damage than sticking it out. If we are in a

difficult relationship, it can seem like the “cut and

run” approach will save us pain, but this is often

not the case.

There are some common early warning signs

that we can all look for. If you identify any of the

signs below in your relationship, it’s time to put

some serious effort into nurturing your partner

and your union.

Below are just a couple of early warning signs

of a troubled relationship:

Bickering and nitpicking are the normHave you noticed that either you or your partner

seem overly critical of the other, focusing on one

another’s flaws or faults or perceiving faults where

there really aren’t any?

Are you constantly quarrelling about inane

issues? Are there times when you can’t even

remember what you’re fighting about? Little

quarrels can lead to big problems. When

bickering replaces conversation, nothing gets

addressed or resolved. Instead, tension builds

and a power struggle ensues. Anger, blame and

resentment can become your bedfellows.

Avoidance is an everyday affairDo you seem to avoid deep and meaningful

conversations? Are either or both of you

absorbed in TV, books or other distractions? Is

the table quiet during meals, and the mornings

spent with noses stuck in newspapers? Does

one or both of you seem to be distant, distracted,

or miles away in your thoughts? Are you

daydreaming more than usual?

Like it or not, straight talk is healthy. Without

it, you will lose your boundaries and values.

Avoiding difficult conversations simply delays the

inevitable. Real differences in a partnership don’t

have to cause problems, especially when they

are explored with respect. When you remain silent

and stoic, repressed feelings become part of a

toxic cocktail that kills relationships.

“The bottom line is that we care for each other and often have high expectations of how we want to be treated by one another. Being human, we occasionally let each other down.”

Resiliency in the Workplace

Last issue, I spoke about the three steps to achieving resilience in the workplace: improving health and well-being, managing workloads and

building happiness. Now, let’s discuss the final step toward achieving resilience in life: building happiness.

Being Authentically HappyA quick self-reflection activity, on what percentage of time you spend feeling happy.

• On average, what percentage of the time do I feel happy? • What percentage of the time do I feel unhappy? • What percentage of the time do I feel neutral?

It is possible to be resilient — to feel happier and more satisfied, to be more engaged with life, find more meaning, have higher hopes, and even laugh and smile more, regardless of one’s circumstances. Below are some key steps for a happier and more satisfying life:

1. Create a gratitude journal: everyday reflect on three things you are grateful for instead of thinking of three things you haven’t done well.

2. Practice acts of kindness: These should be both random and systematic. Being kind to others, whether friends or strangers, triggers a cascade of positive effects - it makes you feel generous and capable, gives you a greater sense of connection with others and wins you smiles, approval and reciprocated kindness - all happiness boosters.

Invest time and energy in family and friends: Where you live, how much money you make, your job title and even your health have surprisingly small effects on your satisfaction with life. The biggest factor appears to be strong personal relationships. n

BY KELLY MANIATIS, REGISTERED PSYCHOLOGIST AND MEMBER OF THE AUSTRALIAN PSYCHOLOGICAL SOCIETY

Part 3

So what do we do?The first step towards a lasting, rewarding relationship is accepting that conflict is inevitable. Marriage (or living together) involves two people being with one another in a relationship for up to seven days a week, twenty-four hours a day, year in, year out. This creates a great deal of physical closeness as we eat, drink, sleep and relax in the same house.

And of course on the other hand, for those in the mining industry for example, you can be away from your relationship for long periods at a time.

The bottom line is that we care for each other and often have high expectations of how we want to be treated by one another. Being human, we occasionally let each other down.

We all experience problems in one-way or another – its part of sharing our lives with another human being. The difference between relationships that work and those that don’t is how well we deal with the challenges we face together. n

CarbohydrateSpecial

Countless Carbohydrate ConfusionCarbohydrates are hot on everyone’s lips at the moment. People are on a modified carbohydrate diet, the famous “Atkins diet”, not eating carbohydrates after 3pm, eating carbohydrates by themselves and some not eating any carbohydrates at all!

I’ve got no timeto think about eating!

Busy? Always feel like there are never enough hours in the day? Are there deadlines and people pressing upon you to get things done

NOW? Most of us can relate to this, and you find yourself getting caught up in the “thick of thin things”!

Now, popular motivational strategies tell us to become more focused and adopt a positive mental attitude however if you are following the wrong principles, you are likely to become efficient at getting yourself more off course and away from where you want to be!

A similarity exists between this idea and the way you construct your daily eating regime. You see, if you can align yourself with the correct strategy or principles for your eating program, and you have successfully mastered your time management techniques and are applying some positive mental attitude, if you’re still making the wrong food choices, you will continue to move away from your goal.

In a nutshell, if you want to lose a few kilos and you are eating your five small meals a day, if they are not the best choices you’ll still get fat!

Making food choices that correctly suit your scenario and goals is tricky as there are too many ideas and strategies to list. If we applied all of them, we would have ourselves eating certain foods because we were a certain blood type, not eating carbohydrates after 2, 3 or 5pm, eating only cabbage soup or possibly only surviving on air (that one was not too popular).

It’s no wonder that people are confused. The information out there is so diverse and although a lot of the ideas make sense (when correctly promoted), you must always consider what is best for YOU!

Your strategy should not be complex and the way I commonly coach busy people to success with their eating is by telling them to do the following:

1) Create an adequate, regular and complete protein intake for your activity level2) Include some good fats – don’t get “fat-phobia”3) Balance the plan with good complex, low GI carbohydrates

To summarise, get some help to find what foods will contribute to your eating success, which will align with your principles and will conveniently fit into your schedule and then feel the difference in your energy levels!

Read the pages of any celebrity magazine and you will most likely come across a story about how the most famous of the stars will whip themselves into shape by simply “eliminating carbohydrates” and, as they often proclaim (complimented by the elongated after shots), “the results are amazing”!

But can we really eliminate carbohydrates all together? Are carbohydrates friend or foe? And why do popular and commonly held beliefs about nutrition such as the healthy eating food pyramid, supported by the Government, suggest that as much as 80 per cent of our daily nutrients come from carbohydrates?

So, who do we believe? Sure, the look of the celebrities could be considered desirable for many, but going against the advice of the Government’s healthy food pyramid might not be considered optimal.

Let’s look at some facts:• Carbohydrates are your body’s preferred source of energy• Carbohydrates are the most useful for your brain functioning• Over consumption of carbohydrates can trigger off a dramatic insulin response which can make you fat

Importantly, remember that a calorie is a calorie and quite simply if you consume more calories that you require or utilise then you will get fat.

In any reduction program, if you are not doing sufficient activity to burn off ingested nutrients, regardless of how low fat the food may be, you won’t get the results you are after!

To put it simply, it is safe to reduce carbohydrates if you have a specific purpose, however you must eventually replenish your body’s supplies of glycogen (produced in the liver from the conversion of carbohydrates to energy).

Carb Friendly BeersIf you enjoy your liquid gold but are concerned with watching what it may do to your waistline, you may be interested to know that there are some options that may suit you.

First, lets discuss what is actually in beer that may upset your diet plans!

Beer tops the alcohol bad list with approximately 140 calories and 8g of carbohydrates per average serve.

Although one or two beers are not too bad, after having four beers and half a take away pizza, you can see the calories may really build up!

What’s great though is that some companies have recognised the need to drink beer, but have made it friendlier by reducing the carbohydrates. Examples include Carlton Pure Blonde, Tooheys Super Dry and Big Head beers.

Try some of these options out and see if you can indulge without the bulge. But remember, sometimes it’s not the beer that makes you fat, but the nuts you eat with it. n

A beautiful house surrounded

by nature reserves, only 200m from Queensland’s gorgeous Coolum white sand beach may sound more like a dream than reality for some – but with Kula Beach Homes, this dream can happen sooner that you think.

Beachside living doesn’t come much better than this, as Coolum is known for its uncrowded beautiful setting close to the Sunshine Coast hinterland. What’s more, it’s a convenient location as the Sunshine Coast Airport is only 10 minutes away while famous Noosa is a 20 minute trip.

And when it comes to the inside of the property, it doesn’t disappoint with each featuring either north or east facing decks, sun-filled interiors and private courtyards, architecturally designed to embrace the surrounds. Add to that the high ceilings and open plan informal areas allowing sea breezes to flow through and you have a truly magnificent design creating comfortable spaces and a relaxed atmosphere.

Those summer days will have you excited as you can cool off in the pool or fire up the barbeque for a casual lunch. Take the boardwalk at the end of the street and you’ll be strolling along that uncrowded beach mentioned earlier.

If you’re feeling a little more active, why not head to the world famous golf courses, the lush Sunshine Coast hinterland, or the Eumundi markets.

Choices range from a two or three storey home and there’s a additional benefit as the homes are actually eligible for the Qld Building Boost grant (but only until 31 Jan 2012).

The Good, The Bad and

The Ugly

Renovations:

I f you see people walking down the street, looking like zombies, feverishly comparing the colours of tiles as they wander the halls

of Bunnings, chances are you’re looking at another casualty in the renovation war. Here’s why spending money, and spending it on the right things, is a necessity.

Practical, Not PrettyThe things that cost lots of money are not always the ones that are obvious to the eye. Insulation, grading- they’re not hot, and they’re not pretty. No one’s going to comment on them as they walk through your home, as they would a new kitchen or beautifully restored old fireplace - but they are a necessity. Making those hard calls will not only improve the re-sale value of the house, but will make it a nicer place to live in for the years you do remain there. Ignoring a leaky roof and renovating the sun room instead might seem like fun, but is a financial disaster waiting to happen.

The BadThere are trends in renovation, as there are in any undertaking. Trends that are written off by this year’s experts (and potentially every year’s experts) include: a fireplace in the corner. For centuries, people put fireplaces in the middle of a wall. For a reason. It immediately throws all proportions of a room out, and makes it look unappetizing. For those with delusions of grandeur- it’s suggested that Grecian columns and spiral staircases are vetoed. Take it from someone with Greek blood- columns only work in ancient settings. And spiral staircases only work in fairytales. Having a house that’s easily accessible and comfortable is far more important than one that looks like Rapunzel is at home.

Limited FundsIf you have limited funds, go with what you know works. As advised in Globe and Mail, invest in well-built structure, good quality windows and appliances that’ll last for 50 years as opposed to flashy ones that break when you breathe too heavily on them. Know your own habits, and ways in which to best accommodate them. A walk-in pantry for the big cook, or an independent bench top for the kitchen for those who like to have dinner parties. n

The mining and resource industry isn’t much different to any other when it comes to standing out from the pack. Showing

your willingness to learn, having a positive attitude

and staying away from workplace politics can be

applied to almost any sector within the workplace

so here are our top five tips for getting ahead in

your job.

5. Willingness to LearnShow your eagerness to keep up with the latest

systems, be willing to go along to any training

courses on offer and take a keen interest in

upcoming changes within the company.

There’s nothing worse than the kind of employee

who will turn their nose up at new systems

because ‘the old one works just fine.’ The world

changes and it’s important you can be flexible

and do so as well.

4. Respect for the CompanySo it may sound a little obvious, but you’d

be surprised how many employees you hear

nowadays whinging and whining about the

systems in place and the way the company

does things.

At the end of the day, if you don’t truly like

the company you’re working for, how can you

expect to get the best results? And to truly like

a company, you need to not focus on the things

you don’t like about it, but the things you do. This

ties in heavily with point 1.

3. Stay Away from the PoliticsEvery society has them; at school it was the

popular girls bitching about everyone else, at

university it was the high achievers sniggering at

those that didn’t do as well, and in the workplace,

the group of workers who get together at lunch

to discuss everything that’s wrong with the

company and how they could improve it if they

were in charge.

The best thing you can do if you want to get

ahead in your job is stay well away. You almost

never hear of this kind of employee climbing the

ladder (because they’re too busy whinging about

how they could build a better one).

The same goes for touchy subjects and gossip.

Some people naturally just want to stir the pot. No

good can come of it, and if you become chummy

with this kind of gossiper, soon enough you’ll be

the right in the middle of it all and you won’t even

know how you got there.

2. AchievementIt may not be rocket science, but be the best

you can be at your job. There used to be a fear

that if you’re the best at your job, you will never

be moved elsewhere (as in upwards) because

no one will ever be able to replace you. That’s

complete rubbish. An employer will soon realise

who the high achievers are in the workplace and

reward them for it – it’s common sense.

1. Positivity A big one, and you’ll notice there’s a little of this

in all of the points mentioned above. Basically, if

you’re positive and happy in your role it will show

and it will rub off.

Focus on the good things in your current job and

not the bad and the same goes for the company,

your co workers, your boss – the list goes on.

Soon enough, your positivity will be noticed,

not only by your employer, but co workers as

well. People will be eager to work with you and

perhaps they’ll even make a comment to the

boss about how great you are to work with.

You’ll be recognised for having a great attitude

and rewarded for doing so – positivity only

breeds positivity.

It’s only onwards and upwards from there! n

Holden launched an all-new Barina hatch this September bringing strong, sporty Holden design language, must-have technology and

five-star safety to the light-car segment. Barina has a proud history over 26-years in Australia

but it’s also a truly global vehicle and will be sold in over 60 countries as the Chevrolet Aveo and Sonic.

Boasting a spirited 85kW 1.6-litre DOHC 16-valve 4-cylinder engine, the Barina has one of the largest powertrains in its segment. The Barina is equipped with a standard 5-speed manual or optional 6-speed automatic transmission with Active Select.

Barina shares impressive safety credentials with its Commodore and Cruze siblings, recently receiving the maximum five-star safety rating from the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP).

Safety features on the all-new car include driver, front passenger, front side and curtain airbags, dual front seatbelt pretensioners, front seatbelt reminders, Electronic Stability Control, a collapsible pedal release system and head restraints for all seats.

Barina plays a key role in Holden’s continuing product renaissance which will see the Adelaide-built Cruze hatch on sale date in November, all-new Colorado in 2012 and the extended-range electric Holden Volt on sale in the second half of next year.

Holden Barina hatch is launching with a driveaway price of just *$16,990 with a manual transmission. The new generation Holden Barina will go on sale around Australia from November. n*Prestige paint is a $500 option

Reynolds Soil Technologies (RST) is a Queensland dust solutions company gone global.

Founded by technical director David Handel, RST has built its industry strength and reputation from humble beginnings on the Gold Coast as a one product operation, to a company with a gradual dominance of the industry seeing it become one of the biggest suppliers of dust suppressants globally, with a $9 million gross turnover in the 2010/11 financial year.

With a background in commercial building, David was working as a project manager before he started dabbling in chemical soil stabilisation for construction and roads, which lead him to dust control chemistry.

Following three years of working on his own, David sought the expertise of fellow directors, Peter Parkinson and Bob Simmons and after establishing RST in 1994, began developing all of RST’s products over a 20 year period.

Now with headquarters on the Gold Coast and in WA’s Welshpool, RST has won contracts on

mine sites all over Australia including New South Wales, Western Australia, the Northern Territory and throughout Queensland.

RST's reputation and success in Australian mines has also pushed them into overseas markets. Following rapid expansion in the past two years, the company now manages operations in South America, South Africa, Asia and New Caledonia, providing solutions to some of the biggest mining houses in the world.

But it doesn’t stop at dust. RST’s diverse product range means its ever-evolving solutions are now being used across a wide range of industries other than mining.

“We don't just supply mines – we also supply and support contractors, agriculture, government departments and councils to small business/mum and dad clients,” said David. “We not only manage dust problems at mine sites, we can also improve liveability in and around mine sites and quarries and can modify our solutions to suit any problem.”

Proving its versatility, RST recently teamed up with a truck wash company to develop a product that prevents arsenic and other residue build-up on the tyres of mine trucks. RST have since been able to tailor that product to develop a bike wash that prevents rust and tarnish on road bikes.

“I’m always excited what may be just around the corner for RST,” said David. “We are constantly creating new and exciting technologies - there’s definitely never a boring day at the office.”

qccu.com.aua refreshing attitude to banking

Mining Advocate_190x88.indd 1 20/10/11 2:48 PM

The end of financial year figures are starting to hit the press with credit unions posting a profit and continuing to take their share of the market. So what is it about credit unions that make them a great banking

alternative? With credit unions subject to the same legal and regulatory obligations as a

bank, they are just as reliable to bank with – but their focus is a little different.Banks are owned by shareholders. This means they make decisions based

on what will give their shareholders the best return on investment. Credit unions on the other hand, are owned by their customers. That means if you have an account with a credit union, you are a share in the business, so decisions on how the credit union operates are primarily based on what will provide the best outcome for you.

Credit unions also tend to look more at the long-term benefit for their customers rather than just a short-term fix so you won’t see credit unions offering an extremely low rate balance transfer on credit card debt, which then switches to a much higher rate down the track – what you see is what you get.

Basically it comes down to this - banks are focused on profit and credit unions are focused on people. n

Credit Unions

The DifferenceBetweenBanks and

I t’s such an obvious (and enviable) trait; those people who can just roll with the punches and keep on trucking. Let’s be honest, life goes and up and goes down and the only difference is how

we react to it. Research is starting to show that success is often coupled with an ability to have a ‘fluid mind’ set. Here are some thoughts on what that means, and how we can all achieve it.

Life As A TeacherA recurring ability in those that have achieved financial and career success is an ability to continue learning new things. Those with a flexible mind will see opportunities as a chance to learn new things, while those with a more stolid way of thinking are probably pretty happy with the way things are and unlikely to learn anything new from a situation or are threatened by ways of thinking that challenge their own. People who are successful, research would show, are those that “approach new situations for their possibilities” according to Yahoo Finance. They believe in opportunities to grow- whether it’s a new job or career or even financial venture.

Page 31: Mount Isa Airport Magazine Issue 18

Life As RiskThis is never to say that life should be approached as all risk and no rationality. Successful people don’t just accept every

harebrained scheme that comes their way, because it

might be risky. People who are successful are excited by risk. They

consider the possibilities, and if the worst that could happen is a risk they can live with, they jump for the opportunity. It’s about the mindset- are you open to new possibilities, or consistently reminding yourself of your own limitations? And could there possibly be a link between your mindset and your perception that opportunities only ever happen to other people? Let’s be honest- if you love your routine, are happy in your job, I say congrats for working out what you want and getting it. But if you are unhappy or would like something different, you need to look at shaking up your mindset to achieve it.

Life As FailureYes, life can involve failure. But only if you view it as such. Sure, there are plenty of experiences we would all have rather done without. Failure is temporary like everything else and if you have growth mindset, you’ll learn to bounce back and over it as just another part of life’s experiences. Knowing that you play the most important part in shaping your future is liberating.

Life As AdaptableThere are some things you might want to hold onto. Your integrity, your work ethic, the people whom you love and who love you back. This is your essential base, so is there anything else you really need to cling to? If the process you are trying isn’t working, try a different one. Sometimes the fact that it is tough and requires a bit of fortitude is a good indicator it’s worth doing. n

They are part of our country’s heritage but when bush fires strike, there’s little we can do. There are ways to protect our homes before they strike though, offering peace of mind for when the season does strike.

Watering your gardens and homes beforehand is important and the trick is to get as much water as possible in the places it is needed. This is a good idea before any threat to our home, not during. A garden hose hand held can be extremely dangerous if the threat of a bush fire is looming. The most important thing to do if this is the case is leave your home.

In mining for dust control and fire prevention, water cannons are used to ensure that the coverage is correct. Pressure, positioning, angle and flow are paramount to making this work. Vari-angle water cannons with the right sized nozzles and configuration protect mines, ports and everyone on site.

Where your home is concerned, small embers can land and start their own fires. They can ignite fires long before the fire reaches your boundaries, and can cause damaging spot fires. So when it comes to watering, getting pressure ratings, angles and flow right will mean greater coverage and less risk.

Cannons with the right pressure ratings can ensure that flow covers all areas, taking into account wind pressure and other variables. Irrigation specialists deal with this every day. The same challenges on the mine site apply wherever water application takes place.

When it comes to configurations that will make a difference to your own risk reduction for your home and around your property you need to

consider the following:Portability/flexibility - being able to move cannons and sprinklers

around, perhaps some fixed and others on portable stands. When there is no risk of fire, this level of flexibility will allow the cannons and sprinklers to be used for crops, turf and flora.

Properly configured pumps and hose - Depending upon the goal of your risk reduction, you can configure what you need to suit your access

to water and the position of your home. For further information on how to increase protection around your

home against bush fires, visit ibinternational.com.au n

So many of the population involved in education today, especially those working in private schools, are wondering whether

the traditional boarding school will survive. But what is a traditional boarding school? In Australian terms this is difficult to answer, as there are many different types of schools which offer boarding. Some aim mainly at the country market, providing education for ‘kids from the bush’. Others aim at the overseas market, looking to provide an education for those students from non-English speaking countries, particularly those from Asia. Yet others aim at the short distance market – those from within 100km of the school but who need a boarding school for some reason or another.

Schools are recognising the changing expectations of the market, and adapting, refocusing and reconfiguring their services to respond to these market forces. Boarding schools are looking at a range of options, such as extended day, weekly boarding and short term stays.

Many families are keen to have time together

every weekend, so a weekly boarding option has become common in most schools in Australia. Such an option, coupled with the support and supervision provided whilst boarders undertake their homework, assignments and study, helps many families who have struggled to provide a suitable environment for academic excellence.

The structure provided by a boarding school is one in which adolescents can really excel, and coupled with the freedom offered by being able to be at home on weekends, this provides an excellent choice for many families.

Casual boarding, where students stay for two or three nights a week, is becoming increasingly common in many schools. Such an offering helps those students who are actively involved in the co-curricular programme of schools and helps save wasted travel time which can be transferred into study and social time together. Schools often offer this at a reduced rate, providing families with a real option to long hours on buses, trains or in cars.

Short stay boarding, where students stay for

a week, two weeks or up to a term, is also an option many boarding schools have begun to offer. Many parents have particularly busy times in their work schedule, or must travel interstate or overseas for short periods, and schools which allow students to stay in the boarding house during such periods have often picked up full time or weekly boarders as the children have enjoyed the time in boarding, and often have achieved excellent results with their studies.

Long day boarding is another of the new breed of offerings. Some schools have branched into offering their students the opportunity to stay at school longer, do homework, have dinner, participate in clubs and sports training, all before their parents pick them up on their way home from a long day at work. For those families living reasonably close to the school where the parents still want daily contact with their child, the long day option is very attractive.

Next issue, I’ll discuss why parents might consider sending their children to boarding school in the first place. n

Discover Island Richeson Surface and Below

As you approach Moreton Island, just a few nautical miles east from the mouth of Brisbane River, you can

feel a sense of calm come over you. It’s only been minutes since you left the

hustle and bustle of the city but stretched out before you is a sparkling blue ocean, long stretches of white sandy beaches and a belt of lush green bushland that reaches into the sky.

The first word that comes to mind is wow!

Moreton Island is the world’s third largest sand island. Ninety-eight per cent of the island is national park and Moreton Bay is also a protected marine park. In realty, Tangalooma, lying smack bang between the two, is a rare find indeed.

Built for fun, there are always plenty of adventures in the offing. On land it’s all about sand! Huge 4WD buses climb the narrow bush track that runs south along the island’s spine to a sand escarpment known

as Tangalooma Desert. This is where real exhilaration is unleashed. Sand toboggans are quickly dispatched and once you slap the board down on that ridge, you take off – literally – hitting speeds of up to 60kms an hour as you descend. Five minutes to get back up to the top and 10 seconds to hit the bottom again - it’s awesome and you just want to keep doing it for as long you your legs can last the distance.

Back at the resort the wide, white beach

36 Issue 18 www.inflightmagazine.com.au

Page 37: Mount Isa Airport Magazine Issue 18

meanders up to the Tangalooma Wrecks - the skeletal remains of 15 scuttled ships that now form an artificial reef and small vessel safe haven. It’s a snorkeler’s paradise. Within easy reach of the beach, the wrecks are teaming with a variety of tropical fish and marine life.

As you walk the short distance to the wrecks, scattered along the way people are at play. There are a few out riding Segways, a kind of two-wheeler beach bike, others wade into the water to get a closer look at a pair of dolphins that are cruising around and kids building a massive sand castle that by morning will be washed away.

The water is crystal clear and boats float by while parasails fly into view, blazing across the sky with their passengers’ legs dangling free at 150 metres.

It’s all happening but in an unhurried, easy kind of way so it’s easy to forget the time.

That is until sunset. The sunsets are spectacular and unique; a rarity on the east coast of Australia. Long and splendid affairs that leave a lasting impression – it’s almost like the sun is reluctant to leave.

The perfect end to a perfect day – everyday? Not quite! The sunset heralds in the true Tangalooma stars – its family of wild dolphins.

Hand feeding a wild inshore bottlenose dolphin is the highlight of the trip. These magnificent animals come to the Tangalooma jetty each night – and have done for 30 years - to socialise and have fresh fish fed to them by adoring resort guests. The experience is extraordinary and you can see it on the faces of the people around you.

That’s Tangalooma though - simply extraordinary. n

The Top Skin Care Tips to Know for TravellingPARCHED SKIN: It’s hard to keep up with your water intake when travelling for work or pleasure; therefore, travelling can lead to extreme dehydration and the climate fluctuations do not help much. Be sure to try and consume at least 1.5 to 2 litres of water daily. Also, make sure to overdose with a moisturiser full of antioxidants and peptides to ensure that you are sealing in the moisture from within and maintaining that healthy, dewy look.

PUFFY EYES: Jet lag always shows through your skin but mostly in the eyes. Lack of sleep due to possible time changes can have you looking sleepy and puffy. Don’t forget to stash an eye cream that contains caffeine for that quick “pick me up” if needed.

MAINTAIN BALANCE: Keeping your skin’s PH balanced is the core of maintaining stable skin throughout your travels. Try an ultra hydrating toner such as Hydra-Pure Toner from Scientifica. This is twice

as heavy in hydrogen than ordinary water and the D2O has a preserving and protective action on your skin. It also helps skin resist water evaporation while keeping you hydrated longer. This unique toner also provides

antibacterial benefits and proper pH balance.

CLEANSE: Don’t forget the cleanser! While running around or even relaxing you collect dirt and surface bacteria on your skin, especially your face. Pick your cleanser depending on the location you are travelling too. If your destination is dry, use a non-foaming or milky cleanser which won’t strip off the necessary oils on the skin. If you are headed somewhere with high humidity, use a foaming or salicylic based cleanser to help balance excess oil.

POST CARE: Finally home, and still struggling with dry, chapped skin? Try this moisture pick me up- Simmer 2 tablespoons of Lavender in 2 litres of water to help replenish lost moisture. Follow this step with a non-greasy moisturizer which will absorb quickly, layered with a Hyaluronic acid based mask. Leave on for 15 minutes, then rinse off. n

I f you’re in the Port Douglas region, I cannot recommend this experience enough. As we hopped on the bus - which would take care of

all the travel worries with pick up and drop of direct to our accommodation – we all started to get excited as the lights dimmed and we saw the line of fire up ahead. Here we were – at Flames of the Forest.

During the evening, we were going to experience dining like never before – set literally in the midst of sublime rainforest and predominantly lit with candlelight. During dinner, local Aborigine brothers share their remarkable stories and the mystical setting was to engulf each and every one of us.

We hopped off the bus and walked through to amazing open space surrounded by trees with sounds and sights leaving us in awe. Immediately greeted by smiling waiters, no one could resist one of the crisp cold champagnes they held out for us.

With nothing around us except for thousands of lit candles, we chatted amongst ourselves until we heard an ancient sounding call signalling it was time to head to the main dining area, which we found was under a massive black silk canopy highlighted by crystal and bud light chandeliers. We were speechless.

As the evening rolled on, the surroundings became all the more magical and at one point, we were asked for a moment of silence so we could truly appreciate the extraordinary surroundings.

No words could do it justice and no photo could capture the magic, so do yourself and favour and experience it for yourself.

TALK BACK WITHFAVOURITE TRAVEL DESTINATION:Fifi - With a love of history and art, I am always drawn to Europe when planning a holiday. I love walking the historic cities in Spain, Italy and France and eating everything in sight because the food is incredible. But I always return home exhausted and a few kilos heavier.Jules - Hawaii is phenomenal. You’d think a place so well-known around the world as a tropical paradise would struggle to live up to expectation, but it actually exceeds it. And now with our strong Aussie dollar, it’s super cheap.

TRAVEL TIP:Jules - Don’t travel with Fifi Box. Some people have aura’s that surround them, Fifi has a Vortex... a tornado of haphazardness

that sucks in everyone who travels with her. You’ll miss flights, misplace baggage and somehow be seated in the same seat as her.Fifi - Don’t travel with Jules Lund. Despite a decade working on a travel program, he still manages to leave his carry-on bags on the plane, leaves his wallet in the taxi, and forgets to book hotels so when you turn up in the middle of the night after a long flight, you get turned away.

MOST EMBARRASSING TRAVEL MOMENT: Fifi - I learnt the hard way not to wear underwire bras when going through US airport security checkpoints. Strip searches are no fun regardless of how attractive the guard is.Jules - Well, the only thing more embarrassing than stripping down to a violet

G-string with the ‘Thunder From Down-Under’ in Vegas, was getting a spray tan the day before wearing nothing but a sock. Use your imagination. Actually... don’t do that.

WHAT ARE SOME EXCITING THINGS COMING UP FOR YOU?Jules – I’m just about to head off on a last minute trek to Everest Base-camp with Intrepid. Can’t wait! I’ve jogged around the block 3 times since Christmas, so I’m more than prepared. Fifi - I’m about to travel through Austria and Germany and can’t wait to get stuck into some bratwurst, Bavarian cakes and strudel. I hope the hotels have a gym because I’m

going to need to burn off some calories. n
