BILLY TEA BUSH DANCE - Tuesday 2nd April

It was with great pleasure and admiration that I had an opportunity to interview one of our amazing students at the whole school assembly last Friday. Milly is a year five student who always demonstrates our school values and is an outstanding role model for our students. This week Milly is participating in The World’s Greatest Shave to raise money for blood can-cer research. She is also donating her hair to a wig maker. Our JSC declared Wednesday, March 13th as crazy hair day at Mount Evelyn PS. Students were invited to come to school with “crazy hair” and bring a gold coin donation for cancer research. Milly has also added her own piece to this newsletter.

Arriving at School on time

One of my favourite times of each day is greeting families as they arrive at school each morn-ing. It is an absolute pleasure to see the enthusiasm with which most of our students arrive at school and this enthusiasm is mirrored in the faces of many parents. Our students are excited to see their friends and to find out what learning will be happening that day.

Thank you to the many families who ensure their children arrive at school on time every day. Punctuality is an important life skill and a great habit to form early in life. Ideally students should arrive at school no earlier than 8.45am which is when the playground is supervised by teachers. This also allows enough time for our students to enjoy a quick catch up with friends before the music signals the start of the day.

Class teachers open classroom doors at 8.50am to enable students to unpack their bags and be ready to start work at 9am. Students who regularly arrive at school after this time miss important instructions and information for that day. They are more unsettled and less ready to learn than their peers.

If your child arrives at school after the 9am bell, please accompany them to the school office to sign them in. They are not to be sent to classrooms without a late arrival card. Your coop-eration in ensuring your child is on time is greatly appreciated.

Congratulations

Congratulations to Lochie, one of our year 6 students.

Last week Lochie participated in the Yarra Valley

Division Swimming Carnival. He achieved a third place

in the under 12s backstroke and a fourth place in the

under 12s breaststroke.

Well done Lochie. You make us proud!

Berry Street Educational Model

Our students were fortunate to have a four day weekend with the Labour Day holiday followed by a student free day. Teachers spent the day participating in Berry Street Educational Model training. This was the third of four days of training and the pro-gram has already had a huge impact on student wellbeing at our school. Day three focused on building student resilience and student stamina. Nurturing stamina is building the muscles of learning one repetition and one day at a time. (Witter 2013) We know that struggling students have not had the opportunity to explicitly build the skills they need to complete their work in an independent and sustained way. With training and a deeper understanding of brain development our teachers are better able to support students to “Be the Best they can Be”.

Harmony Day

Next Thursday our students will be celebrating Harmony Day. They are invited to wear a touch of orange (hair tie, socks etc.) and participate in activities in their classrooms and across their levels. Harmony Day is about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone and this is a message that we reinforce daily at Mount Evelyn PS. Our diversity helps makes Australia a great place to live and we enjoy different cultures, foods, ideas, minds, music and art that come from all over the world. It would be great if families could reinforce this learning at home by having a discussion about Harmony Day and what it means to you.

Have a great week,

Angie and Helen
