CLOSE TO HOME:

NEW FACILITIES

BENEFIT

COMMUNITY

Premier of NSW Gladys Berejiklian and Minister for Health

Brad Hazzard joined our staff, project team and community

members for the official opening of the stage 2 expansion

projects at Mount Druitt Hospital this week.

Guests joined us at the new Community Dialysis Centre for

morning tea and a plaque unveiling, and the Premier and

Minister were taken on a tour of the centre by A/P Lukas

Kairaitis.

Local Elder Aunty Rita nearly brought us to tears with her

heartwarming welcome, describing her family as a “dialysis

family” and saying the new centre would make the world of

difference to the community.

A/P Lukas Kairaitis summed it up perfectly when he said that

best practice is to deliver dialysis at home but if that’s not

possible, close to home is best.

“This facility has long been a missing link for our service, and

the opening has been enthusiastically welcomed by the

patients here,” he said.

“As a practising kidney specialist in western Sydney, I’m

proud and delighted to be here to celebrate this important

event and to acknowledge the opportunity this unit offers to

improve the quality of life for our patients,” he said.

The centre includes an Aboriginal Healing Garden for respite

and relaxation with artwork by celebrated local Elder Uncle

Danny Eastwood and sculptor Henryk Topolnicki.

Health Infrastructure Project Director Chris Horton said the

delivery of a new MRI Unit, Centre for Addiction Medicine,

recovery expansion, pre-admission clinic and digital theatre

were also included in stage 2.

“It’s been a great opportunity to work with

Western Sydney Local Health District in

delivering new and improved services across

Mount Druitt ,” Chris said.
