Dear Parents,

I am delighted to inform you that our school has been successful in achiev-

ing Independent Public School (IPS) status in 2019. I would like to thank the

Webb, Regional Executive Director; Paul Meacock, A/Regional Executive

Director and Ian Anderson, President of the West Australian Primary Princi-

pal’s Association.

Our school opened in 1917 as Graylands State School. In 2007 the school’s

name changed to Mount Claremont Primary School to reflect the suburb and

in 2019 our IPS journey begins.

STAFFING

Welcome to new staff:

Mrs Amber Aitken, Defence School Transition Aide - Thursday and Friday.

Mrs Zara Mubarakai, Teacher in Kindy – Wednesday.

Respect our school grounds.

Recently the school had to pay for the sandpits in early childhood to be professionally cleaned after finding bro-

ken glass bottles in them from the weekend. Our school is a great place to play afterschool and at the week-

ends, but it should be treated with care and respect by ALL members of the community. Please report damage

or suspicious behaviour to Police - 131 444 or School Watch- 1800 177 777.

Perth Royal Show

Mrs Shedley, the Visual Arts teacher has arranged for student art to be displayed in three pavilions at the show.

Congratulations to the students who have had their art selected for the display.

Thank you to the many parents for volunteering for show parking. To the staff, you are incredible for volunteer-

ing your time to do a shift, during the vacation break. Show parking is a unique fundraising activity for the P&C

Association.

Drought Aid

Giving back to the community and performing an act of service strengthens a child’s understanding of being part

of a community and having empathy for others. The Care Captains, Hannah and Sierra and the students of

Room 3 organised a fabulous Drought Aid Fundraiser. Simple, wholesome fun activities, games, dressing up

and delicious treats is an event the students and staff love!

As the term draws to a close, I extend a farewell to families leaving the school and extend a warm welcome to

the new families who have recently joined our community.

After the holiday break students return to school on Tuesday 9 October. Please keep watch over our school

during the vacation period.

I look forward to the Room 10, Year 2 Assembly on Friday morning.

Fresh Strawberries

Lorna, our Farmers Market Coordinator is asking families and the community to support our local farmers and

buy your strawberries direct from the stall holders. Beautiful, fresh sweet strawberries direct from the farm to

you!

Interschool Athletics Carnival Last week MCPS competed in the Interschool Athletics Carnival held at Swanbourne PS. It was a fantastic day, not even the annoying drizzle of rain could dampen the carnival atmosphere, and it was exciting to see so many wonderful athletes performing on the big stage. Well done to all Mount Claremont PS students from Year 3-6 who represented our school brilliantly in both individual and team events on the carnival day. The magnificent performances across all team game events was particularly pleasing, helping MCPS to its high-est points total at the Interschool Athletics carnival with a 2nd place finish in the Meritorious Shield and 5th place in the Champion school standings. Congratulations to Freshwater Bay and Jolimont for taking out the Champion and Meritorious shields. Champion Shield: Freshwater Bay - 248 Jolimont - 230 Mosman Park - 215 Cottesloe - 212 Mount Claremont - 151 Hollywood - 78 Meritorious Shield: Jolimont - 332 Mount Claremont - 302 Freshwater Bay - 292 Mosman Park - 278 Cottesloe - 212 Hollywood - 200 I would like to thank all students for their tremendous efforts and hard work put in throughout the entire term, whether it be at school, in athletics training or at any of the many faction or interschool carnivals. You've all done a wonderful job representing our great school and should be extremely proud! I must also thank Karen Flynn and Christine Burke for organising and coaching the athletics training sessions every Tuesday & Thursday during the term. You've both done a fantastic job, along with our awesome assistant coaches in Tamura Boog and Lachlan Burke, in preparing our students for the athletics period, I greatly appreci-ate all of your help. Tamala Park Excursion

On Monday the 10th of September, Rooms 9 and 10 went on an exciting excursion to the Tamala Park Waste Facility in Mindarie. We left school at 9.00 and at 9.45 we arrived at Tamala Park. Peg was our tour guide and the year 1’s had Steffie. We stayed on the bus with Peg and the year 1’s got off the bus with Steffie. The first part of the tour we saw the tip shop, also we saw where all of the cardboard goes and we saw a GIANT hole in the ground where all of the rubbish goes. They layer it like a lasagne, with dirt, rubbish, dirt, rubbish and more dirt! When the tour was over we swapped with the year 1’s and went to the education centre. We looked for some metal frogs that were sad or happy and had to look at the environment they were in. Then we had recess and then we went exploring around the education centre to find things Peg told us to find like musical instruments and

the worm farm. It was a great day! – Peyton Rawstorne

On Monday 10th of September Rooms 9 and 10 went to Tamala Park. Tamala Park is a recycling centre. When we got there Steffie out guide told us about what goes in each bin. Then we got on a bus to go to where all of the

waste gets stored. I give it an 8 out of 10! My favourite part was holding the worms. – Matilda Hastwell

An excursion to The Literature Centre, Fremantle.

Telling stories with visuals is an ancient art. A modern day approach is to communicate through picture books using text and illustrations.

Friday 14th September was the when The Year 2/3s (Room 11), Year 3/4s (Room 2) and Year 4s (Room 3) at-tended an excursion to The Literature Centre in Fremantle. This centre is set on the Fremantle Prison grounds where students were given a brief talk about the history of the place before delving into the key elements of pic-ture books and the processes involved with making a picture book. Within the same old prison buildings are dis-plays of sketches, plans, original writing and artwork.

We learnt about how picture books are entertaining, informative, symbolic and often carries messages in a way only pictures and well selected words can express. The students were given opportunities to closely view dis-plays of original artworks from two picture books. In addition, students were taught the steps with which authors and illustrators may have to work through to produce a picture book.

The students listened attentively and were engaged answering many questions. The presenters also mentioned that our students would have to be one of the best groups they’ve had this year.

Visual Arts If you are going to the IGA Perth Royal Show this year, you may be interested in viewing artworks created by students from our school. I have entered our students' work in the 'Cat Art' and 'Poultry Art' schools competitions. Near the Cat Pavilion, you will see our upper primary students' graceful cat draw-ings completed with chalk pastels, watercolour paints and pencils. The colourful paintings from our middle primary students of hens and roosters will be adorning the walls of the Pigeon and Poultry Pavilion. You will find our junior primary stu-dents' delightful dairy cow paintings displayed in the Legendary Milking Station. I would like to thank all students for their creativity and effort whilst working on their entries for the Perth Royal Show Schools Competitions. Simone Shedley Visual Arts

Perth Hills Excursion

On Monday the 10th of September 2018, Room 14 and Room 15 went on an excursion to Perth Hills. We hunted for snakes and lizards, made a gumnut necklace and we had our faces painted with either an emu (weitch), kan-garoo (yonga), a snake (wangu) or dots. The girls threw wonga sticks and the boys threw spears at a fake kanga-roo. We were all very excited and had a great day! Thank you to the parents for helping us on our excursion.

Drought Aid Fundraiser

On Wednesday 19th Mount Claremont Primary School held a charity fundraiser to support the Drought Ap-peal through School Aid. With farmers suffering through what many are calling the ‘worst drought in living memory’ School Aid’s Hay and Hampers for Hope campaign is an important vehicle that provides a powerful way for young people to respond as a collective to the plight of those on the land.

As part of the fundraising, Room 3 was asked to set up a food stall and run game stalls. Before the sale we brainstormed, as a class, which foods have been popular at previous sales and created a list of dishes we thought would raise lots of money. Students then volunteered to make those items at home. The students ex-ceeded expectations by bringing in numerous plates of yummy goodness and the sale was a roaring success.

Students also raised money by giving a gold coin donation to dress up as a farmer or farm animal.

Over the day, we were able to raise $1358 for a very worthy cause. Great work guys!

DSTA News

I would firstly like to say what a warm welcome I have had from students and staff since starting in my role as the DSTA here at the school!

What is a DSTA you might ask? The Defence School Transition Aide (DSTA) Program provides funding to sup-port schools to engage a Defence School Transition Aide (DSTA) or Defence Transition Mentor (DTM) to mini-mise the impact of mobility on education and build the capability of the school to support Defence students partic-ularly during transitions into and out of the school and during parental absences. The aim of the DSTA Program is to facilitate the best possible educational outcome for children of Defence members through on-site, direct and flexible assistance to students, parents, teachers and other support services.

Aides and Mentors' activities include:

* assisting children and families to integrate into the new school and local community,

* monitoring the social, emotional and academic wellbeing of Defence students,

* helping students develop self-confidence, self-reliance and resilience,

* referring students to services, or school and community programs that meet their needs,

* enhancing awareness and appreciation of the unique Defence lifestyle in schools and communities, and

* providing support to children during times of parental absence.

Starting next term, I will be running lunchtime activities as part of the health and wellbeing team for students and regularly visiting defence students in class.

I am available every Thursday and Friday 8:30am-3:30pm and can be contacted 9208 3900 and my email ad-dress is:-

[email protected]

I will be organising a defence parent meet and greet as well so please let me know if this is something you would be interested in.

I look forward to meeting you soon.
