ALUMNI
ASSOCIATION
(MCCAA)
ANNUAL REPORT
2017 - 18
The year began with the Core Committee deciding on the theme for the year to plan its
activities.
REUNION:
The class of 1992 had their reunion to celebrate the 25th
anniversary of their graduation.
The alumni of this class relived their moments in Mount Carmel College & shared fond
memories with their professors.
The alumni put up a cultural show in honour of their professors.
The class started a corpus fund with a capital of 4,00,000/- for the retired teachers, to
express their gratitude to their professors, who were the pillar of strength in their formative
years.
They also constituted a scholarship for the students in college - HOPE '92 - Helping
Outstanding Pupils Excel - an Arts/Science/Commerce Endowment for Enduring Education
instituted by the Class of 1992 (for a deserving FINAL YEAR student from
B.A., B.Com & B.Sc'), to encourage them in their studies. The corpus for this scholarship
was 2,10,000/-.
It was an enjoyable morning spent, with the alumni leaving on a nostalgic note, but all geared
up, to come back again to be actively involved in many more activities lined up by MCCAA.
ALUMNI INTERACTIONS WITH STUDENTS:
Dr Uma (alumna batch of 1967 CBZ), ex staff retired Cancer geneticist from the US,
counseled students by answering their queries in June 2017 on the Relevance and Application
of biology as a subject of study in teaching and research through a video call.
She gave them insights into the opportunities available to a field biologist, the importance of
Ethology as a way of determining the relationship of non-human animals to human beings by
studying their responses to stimuli, strength of their cognitive behaviour, communication
patterns and other attributes, and threw light on Pharmacogenomics an area for research that
has become highly relevant and very valuable in cancer therapy.
Ms. Ameeta Kelekar, Associate Professor - University of Minnesota (alumna - Class of
1976) Interacted with students through audio conversation as subject expert - the role of
biology with chemistry in field of molecular biology and cell biology as she works on cancer
cell metabolism. She remembered her student days in MCC which provided an environment
to pursue her post graduate studies in Mumbai and doctoral work abroad and sharing her
laboratory experiences, love to mentor students if needed, with a note to enjoy as students in
college.
GIRL CHILD EDUCATION: 2 students were found to be the eligible recipients of the Girl
child education fund by MCCAA, and their fees were paid from the interest accrued from the
