School Closure Notification
The NZEI (Teachers and Principal Union) has advised the Motueka South School Board of Trustees that union members at our school will be taking strike action for a full day on Wednesday 15th August 2018.
The Board has carefully considered the availability of teaching staff, and unfortunately decided that we cannot provide the normal teaching services during the strike.
The school will need to close during this strike - Wednesday 15th August 2018.
It’s important that you make alternative arrangements for the care of your child/children on the day of the strike.
I know that this is inconvenient for parents and students alike, but please be assured that student safety is our main concern. Thank you for your understanding.
Please contact a Board of Trustees member if you have any queries relating to this decision.
Yours sincerely
Gavin Frampton Chairperson Motueka South School Board of Trustees

Year 4/5/6 Tackle Rugby Tournament
On Wednesday 1 August we went to compete at the
Golden Bay/Motueka rugby tackle tournament.
There were three Motueka South teams competing.
The “Competitive” team played 3 games plus the
finals. We won all of our games except the final when
we lost to Motupipi School who had travelled all the
way from Takaka. It was a really hard game but
we still qualified to play at Henley School in another
competition, we were surprised.
At the end of the day
we were really dirty
and muddy as you can
see in the photo!

OPEN LETTER TO OUR SCHOOL COMMUNITY
Teachers across New Zealand are genuinely concerned about the state of teaching in New Zealand and for this reason are agreeing to strike in a bid to change this. The facts are: • The average age of a teacher in New Zealand is 57 years • 40% drop in people training to be teachers • Those new teachers who do enter the profession stay an average
of only 5 years • Student numbers are increasing rapidly. This begs the question “Who will be teaching your children in 5 years time?” What we are campaigning for: • More teachers – so your children can get more attention • More resources/staff – to support children with additional learning
needs • A pay jolt to salaries for teachers to address the teacher shortage
– so that your children will have a teacher in the future. Something needs to be done now to attract high quality people to the teaching profession and retain them. This will only happen if teachers are respected as professionals, paid accordingly and schools are resourced to do the best job they can to meet the many, varied needs of our children through appropriate class sizes, resourcing and staffing. We cannot make this change on our own and need the support of our boards and school communities to make our voices heard. The national strike is to raise awareness of the teacher shortage crisis and what this will mean for every child in New Zealand if something is not done now. On 15 August, strike day, teachers will be out in their communities raising awareness and fighting for the rights of children to a quality education. We hope that communities will understand and support our position. The decision to take strike action has not been made lightly nor is it a selfish decision solely for personal gain. It has been made because we genuinely care about our profession and the children we teach. Yours sincerely MSS Teaching Staff
