Mott Community College Trustee Celia M. Turner was elected National Treasurer at the 40th Annual Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT) Leadership Conference recently in California. As Treasurer, Turner will serve on the national ACCT Board of Directors and is likely to rise through board officer posi- tions to become national president in the future. In 2007, Celia Turner had been elected to the ACCT Board of Directors as a Delegate-at-Large. "This is a wonderful opportunity for Mott College as well as the community of Flint and Genesee County," said MCC President Dick Shaink. "Being on the national scene allows Trustee Turner to have direct input on national programs and federal legislation as well as bringing inside information back to our community. She will be a valuable asset during this difficult time of economic transition." Turner has served on the MCC Board of Trustees since being first elected in 2003 and then re-elected in 2009. She is a retired consignment operation coordinator with General Motors Service Parts Operations. Ms. Turner received a Master's Degree in Administration (1994) and a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration (1992) from Central Michigan University. She is a graduate of Flint Central High School. An active member of her community, Ms. Turner is involved with numerous organiza- tions and activities. She is a Board Member of the Light of the World Foundation, a Board Member of the Michigan Senior Network Service Agency, an Executive Board Member and Co-Chair of the UNCF Flint Branch, and an Executive Board Member of the NAACP. In 2001, Ms. Turner was a recipient of the YWCA of Greater Flint Corporate Women of Achievement Award for General Motors Service Parts Operations World Headquarters in Grand Blanc. The Association of Community College Trustees is a non-profit educational organization of gov- erning boards, representing more than 6,500 elected and appointed trustees who govern over 1,200 community, technical, and junior colleges in the United States serving over 11 million students annually. Dean Mary Cusack shares news from the Fine Arts Division.Media Arts and Entertainment Technology Coordinator DaveRembiesa recently spent time as an extra on the sets of the remakeof the 80's hit Red Dawn, which is being filmed in the Detroit area,and Alleged, filmed here in Flint.

Fine Art faculty member Debra Dow and Fine Arts DivisionDean Mary Cusack were part of a group exhibit at the CreoleGallery held in Lansing in October. The exhibit called "Patterns atCreole" featured the diverse work of six artists and educators whoshaped their work around the titular principle of design. Dow'sworks feature prints and mixed media, Cusack's works are photo-graphs.

Music Professor Chuck Iwanusa participated in the 21st AnnualEden Mills (Ontario) Writers Festival Jazz Composition Workshopheld in September, critiquing students from Mohawk College and theUniversity of Toronto. On Oct. 21, the MCC Jazz Combo, under thedirection of Chuck Iwanusa, performed at the Flint JewishFederation's annual Donald Riegle Community Service Award presentation to recognize community leaders. The event was held atthe Flint Institute of Art.

Art Prof. Thom Bohnert was the keynote speaker at theMichigan Ceramic Art Association's conference, Michigan Mud2009, held Oct. 2-3 at Grand Valley State University. This was the20th anniversary of the conference, and Thom's work and his association with MCC was prominently featured throughout the conference. Thom Bohnert is also a participating artist in theContemporary Art Institute of Detroit's 2009 Actual Size Biennial.The exhibit runs from Nov. 7 through December 19 at the CAID andat the Ladybug Gallery. Graphic Design coordinator Mara Fulmer was one of only twocommunity college representatives invited to take part in "TheDesigners Accord Global Summit on Design Education andSustainability" in San Francisco. The Designers Accord is the globalcoalition of designers, educators, and business leaders workingtogether to create positive environmental and social impact. InOctober, the Designers Accord convened 100 individuals from theworld's most distinguished academic and professional institutions, fortwo days of highly participatory discussion, planning, and action to

integrate design education and sustainable practices in graphic designand production.

Printmaking faculty Mary Birkmeier was part of a groupexhibit at the Creative 360 Gallery in Midland from Sept. 16 – Nov.6. The exhibit featured five works each by ten printmakers, and alsoincluded MCC printmaking student Nancy Pennell.

The works of Honors Program Coordinator Heather Sisto,MCC Prof. Emeritus John Mrozik, Fine Arts' Mary Birkmeier andNancy Pennell are part of a multimedia exhibition DISTINCTEXPRESSIONS, featuring the Flint Artists Market at the Gallery 194in downtown Lapeer, through Nov. 14. A variety of media, includingfiber, porcelain, photography, watermedia, acrylic, batik, collage andprint making will be featured. A smaller, satellite exhibit will behanging on the walls of the Starbucks near DeMille and Main Street,inviting people to view the Flint Artists Market's larger body of workdowntown. Gallery 194 is located in downtown Lapeer on the cornerof Court and Neppessing Streets next to the historic PIX Theatre.Hours of operation are Tuesday through Saturday from 11am to 6pm. MCC's Dental Hygiene Clinic has been named for Flint's fluoridepioneer Richard A. Shick, D.D.S., M.S., and his wife, Rose Marie,commemorating his personal and professional leadership both in thefield of dentistry at Mott Community College his alma mater.

Dr. Shick provided a significant lead gift towards the college's $3-million Endowment Growth Initiative. He was named DistinguishedAlumni of Mott Community College in 2007 and also has served aschair of the Foundation for Mott Community College's Board ofDirectors.The Shicks donated their gift to the Dental Assisting andDental Hygiene programs for improvements to the clinic where stu-dents are trained on the latest technology associated with dentistry.

Dr. Shick received his Associate in Science from Flint JuniorCollege in 1949. He went on to earn a D.D.S. and M.S. inPeriodontics at The University of Michigan. He was the Co-Chair oftwo successful fluoridation referendums for the City of Flint in 1965and 1966, and Initiated Health Education Research projects in FlintSchools that resulted in six published reports. Dr. Shick also waschair of the committee that initiated Dental Assisting and DentalHygiene programs for MCC. In 1993, he lead the initiative to movethe Dental Hygiene Clinic from the Mott Children’s Health Clinic toMCC's main campus in Flint. He has received many awards for hiscommitment to dentistry and was named Citizen of the Year in GrandBlanc in 2002. Previously he has served as President of the GeneseeDistrict Society, Michigan Dental Association and First Vice Presidentof the American Dental Association. Currently, Dr. Shick is servingas President of the International College of Dentists and his wife,Rose Marie, has been traveling the world with him.

"Naming the Dental Hygiene Clinic for Dr. and Mrs. Shick is aperfect tribute to the generosity and commitment that they haveshown to this school and to the students who attend here," saidLennetta Coney, President of the Foundation for Mott CommunityCollege. "We are grateful for their contributions on every level."

A plaque honoring the Shicks has been placed just outside theclinic, located on the second floor of the Mott Memorial Building,and their names have been added to a wall overlooking the students asthey work.

Global Issues Film FestivalMCC, Kettering University and UM-Flint will once again

partner to host films of wide ranging topics from around the worldfor the eighth annual Global Issues Film Festival. MCC kicks off thefirst half of the festival Saturday and Sunday Nov. 14 and 15 withfour films to be shown in the Regional Technology Center (RTC)Auditorium. Special guest featured this year is Flint native MichaelRamsdell, producer of the film The Anatomy of Hate; A Dialogue toHope. Admission is free and the public is welcome.

Three films will be screened on Saturday, Nov. 14 and one filmwill be shown on Sunday, Nov. 15. The festival opens with the filmGarbage Warrior (2007) at 1 pm on Saturday, Nov. 14 at 1pm. Thisfilm is set in Taos, New Mexico. Renegade architect MichaelReynolds has been developing "Earthship Biotecture" for over 30years. Reynolds' vision for energy-independent housing and NewMexico's laws begin a multi-year battle; meanwhile, Mother Natureis sending tsunamis and hurricanes to people who need good, basichousing now.

Visit Sri Lanka and see two women who join the Tamil Tigersas trained terrorists at the 3 pm Saturday, Nov. 14 showing of MyDaughter the Terrorist (2007) filmed by Beate Arnestad and pro-duced by Morten Daae. This even-handed documentary shows thereasons behind the bloody struggle while still questioning the tacticsused.

End day one of the festival with the 5 pm showing of ArusiPersian Wedding (2005). Planning a wedding is difficult in the bestof circumstances. When a couple adds the complication of mixedcultures, long-lost family members, and long travel the story getseven more interesting. The wedding is to be held in Iran. The political struggle of both countries adds an interesting backdrop tothis real family story.

Sunday marks the festival highlight with the 3 pm screening ofThe Anatomy of Hate; A Dialogue of Hope (2008). MichaelRamsdell worked to achieve unprecedented access to some of themost venomous ideologies and violent conflicts of our time.Ramsdell turns his camera to Iraq, Israel, the Palestinian territory,and even to hate groups in the US. Following the film Ramsdell willtake questions and share the challenges involved in making thisunique film.

The Global Issues Film Festival is sponsored by the GreaterFlint Arts Council, the Michigan Council for the Arts and CulturalAffairs, Mott Community College, Kettering University'sDepartment of Liberal Studies and the University of Michigan-Flint.The second half of the festival will run Jan. 27-30, 2010 at KetteringUniversity. An exhibit of photographs by Fine Arts Division Dean and Photographer Mary Cusack titled Bright Lights, Big Cities will be in the Fine ArtsGallery from Monday, Nov. 9 through Tuesday, Nov. 24. In addition, Cusack will give a presentation about her work on Tuesday, Nov. 17 at 1 pm inthe Visual Arts and Design Center, room 129. These events, made possible in part by The Ballenger Trust, are free and open to the public.

Mary Cusack's exhibition experience includes "24"Ours, December 2008 - January 2009, Buckham Gallery, Flint; Social Discourse: An ArtsExperience, June - July 2008, Studio 1210, Lansing, and Industrial Pulchritude, February 2004, Lansing Art Gallery, Lansing. She is also a memberof the Board of Directors for Lansing Art Gallery.

Her artist statement reads in part as follows: "My interest in photography has always been self-serving. Public admiration and patronage arenice, but my motivation is to take pictures which are aesthetically pleasing to me. Of course, I am thrilled when people enjoy my work, but restassured, how an audience might react is furthest from my mind when I point and shoot."

"I am a capture-oriented photographer. Even in the bygone era of film photography, I never stepped foot in a darkroom. That part of theprocess held zero interest for me. Isolating a moment in place and time, capturing unique light, color and pattern, memorializing a feeling, tone oratmosphere -- those are the things that interest me."
