DESCRIPTION

International research challenges government complacency regarding public health exposures to various non-ionizing, non-thermal electromagnetic radiation. Scientific evidence establishes an urgent need for stricter regulations and preventive measures to preserve public health. People are fed up with cover-ups and inferior public policies regarding electromagnetic exposures.Extremely low frequency electromagnetic field (ELF EMF) radiations are of major concern due to their penetrating properties. Excessive ELF EMF magnetic field radiation has been discovered above motorcycle seats. Some ELF EMF radiation readings are evident up to 6 feet away from motorcycle seats which includes the heart, breast and entire torso of the rider. Closeness to the ELF EMF source and duration of exposure are key factors in health risk assessment. For avid motorcyclists some of the health concerns are lymphomas, leukemia, cancers of the prostate, testicle, colon, bladder, kidney, liver, pancreas, stomach, etc., heart and immune system disorder, infertility, sterility, erectile dysfunction, impotence, prostatitis, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)-prostate enlargement, urinary problems, infections and loss of libido.Motorcyclists should not have to gamble with cancer-controversial excessive electromagnetic radiation emission penetrating their bodies.Randall Dale ChipkarThe Motorcycle Cancer BookChipkar Health Concepts Limitedhttp://www.motorcyclecancer.comhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hJcYHeUVAzkhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Qc6Q_xHQcghttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kWT755JhKsQhttp://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/motorcycle-cancer-riskhttp://www.prweb.com/releases/motorcycle/seats/prweb3209104.htmhttp://www.prweb.com/releases/motorcycle/cancer/prweb2731414.htmhttp://www.prweb.com/releases/motorcycle/cancer/prweb3981374.htm

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Motorcyclist Discovers Cancer Risk ELF EMF Magnetic Field Radiation Emission above Motorcycle Seats

In his book, Motorcycle Cancer?, patent-granted Canadian author Randall Dale Chipkar considers motorcycle ELF EMF radiation a possible “Black Plague” for motorcyclists. "Unsuspecting riders have a higher risk for cancer development from ELF EMF magnetic radiation penetrating up into their groins," says Chipkar.

Motorcycle Cancer? won the 2011 eLIT Health / Medical Bronze Award and Silver Medal for Randall Dale Chipkar, the Health eBook Award-2012 International Book Awards and the IBA Health: Men's Health Finalist Award.

Chipkar is a man on a mission: to protect motorcyclists worldwide. “I have met countless avid motorcycle riders diagnosed with similar forms of cancers and disorders. All of these riders had a type of extremely low frequency electromagnetic field (ELF EMF) radiation penetrating up through their motorcycle seats," Chipkar adds.

“I have read up to 500 milliGauss (mG) of ELF EMF radiation above motorcycle seats. In contrast, many doctors raise cancer concerns involving 3 to 5 mG of ELF EMF exposure from other sources. Major organizations now agree that non-ionizing, non-thermal ELF EMF magnetic fields are a possible carcinogen.

“Motorcycles consist of oscillating-current electrical systems that generate anywhere from 10,000 to 70,000 volts of electricity during engine operation. Many motorcycles have excessive ELF EMF producing components located immediately beneath the seat of the rider. ELF EMF magnetic fields are extremely penetrating and pass through all conventional metals including steel and even lead, “says Chipkar.

“The prostate is of major concern as it is one of the closest delicate glands invaded by the radiation. For both men and women riders, the colon and neighboring organs are also at risk. People should not have to gamble with their health because they love riding motorcycles,” adds Chipkar.

“One of the most profound effects of ELF EMF radiation exposure on the body is a decrease in the production and role of melatonin. Melatonin is the body’s natural hormone for fighting cancer-growth and the gastrointestinal tract is responsible for synthesizing vast amounts of melatonin. For millions of motorcycle riders, one of the main sources of the body’s cancer-growth inhibiting hormone is getting showered with ELF EMF magnetic field radiation,” says Chipkar.

Page 2: Motorcyclist Discovers Cancer Risk ELF EMF Magnetic Field Radiation Emission Above Motorcycle Seats

“Motorcycle ELF EMFs also penetrate bone marrow melatonin. Bone marrow melatonin controls oxidation and cytotoxicity for proper assimilation of red blood cells, white blood cells, stem cells, dendritic cells, B-cells, T-cells, NK-cells, etc. which are crucial for immune system defense against pathogens, disease and cancer,” Chipkar says.

“Compromised melatonin can affect cancer-growth inhibition at locations anywhere throughout the body. Promotion of any hereditary cancer progression is also of concern.

“It’s not just about cancer,” Chipkar says. “As explained in both The Motorcycle Cancer Book and the motorcycle cancer website many health disorders are linked to various types of ELF EMF radiation exposures. For example, infertility, sterility, erectile dysfunction, or impotence could also be side effects of groin exposure to excessive ELF EMFs.

“Concern resides in motorcycle ELF EMF radiation that can reach the breast area. Various types of ELF EMF exposures are linked to interfering with certain breast cancer medication,” adds Chipkar.

“ELF EMF radiation education can only lead to health prosperity. On the motorcycle cancer website links, The W.E.E.P. Initiative (2008) and The BioInitiative Report (2007) are ice-breakers for properly educating people about the dangers of electromagnetic radiation. The best advice doctors are giving is prudent avoidance of exposure as with other potential carcinogens. This up to date reporting involves some of the best experts in the field and it is time to start protecting people through precaution and awareness.

“Motorcycle police officers deserve our utmost attention regarding these issues due to riding duration. Hopefully, motorcycle police associations worldwide will initiate this essential epidemiology. Certainly we can reciprocate the motto ‘to serve and protect’ for some of our finest,” says Chipkar.

“Health concern surrounds automobile steel-belted radial tires as, when rotating, they can generate massive magnetic fields. Steel-belted radials are becoming more common on motorcycles and the rider’s groin is only inches away from the rear tire. Although not of electrical origin, varying ELF magnetic fields can still radiate out, penetrating the rider, especially at highway speeds,” Chipkar says.

“Government capabilities can be limited concerning certain situations. More governments are now adopting the Precautionary Principle regarding various electromagnetic exposures and public safety. Thanks to courageous and responsible journalism a more EMF educated society is evolving.

Page 3: Motorcyclist Discovers Cancer Risk ELF EMF Magnetic Field Radiation Emission Above Motorcycle Seats

“This motorcycle-melatonin link is a breakthrough for future motorcyclist safety. The motorcycle industry needs to recognize, cooperate and support rational precautionary safety guidelines to reduce rider health risk from excessive ELF EMF radiation above motorcycle seats,” Chipkar adds.

“One goal is to have the motorcycle industry publish the ELF EMF radiation emissions penetrating up through motorcycle seats. Then, at the point of purchase, consumers can make personal decisions regarding excessive ELF EMF magnetic field close exposure,” Chipkar says.

“People have a right to physiological integrity without synthetic electromagnetic intervention. The spirit of motorcyclist safety needs to encompass emerging technological health issues to confirm consumer confidence.

“I wrote Motorcycle Cancer? to expose the truth and was then granted the patent for RiderSaver™ ELF EMF shielding motorcycle seats to help protect riders. No one, especially pregnant women or cancer survivors, wants cancer-controversial radiation flooding their body every time they ride,” says Chipkar.

“Conquering cancer requires our utmost attention concerning any potential cancer causation, cancer-growth promotion or cancer medication disruption,” Chipkar adds.

“At motorcyclecancer.com, RiderSaver™ ELF EMF motorcycle seat shielding is available worldwide for those riders who recognize the concern. Motorcycle seat retrofit procedure and RiderSaver™ retailer registration is also available at the site. Hopefully, RiderSaver™ ELF EMF shielding will revolutionize the motorcycle industry to keep riders safer.

“I developed the International Motorcyclist Electromagnetic Safety Month Proclamation and The Motorcycle Cancer Risk Worldwide Petition for rider safety.

“Let’s put ‘true freedom’ back into riding motorcycles,” Chipkar says.

Electromagnetic Pro-Ionization Principle

When various non-ionizing, non-thermal electromagnetic exposures promote adverse ion/electron bio-effects that affect health over time, such radiations warrant emission identification, pro-ionizing sub-classification, and health risk recognition for public safety conservation.

Sweden lists electromagnetic fields (EMFs) as Class 2 Carcinogens.

"...Sweden has concluded that EMFs do lead to higher rates of cancer ... I, frankly was somewhat impressed by the arguments made by the Swedes." - President Bill Clinton

Dr. Larry Anderson’s Battelle Lab studies implicated both magnetic and electric field as causes of cancer.

“Electromagnetic fields are associated with the development of leukemia, brain cancer and other serious diseases."Paul Brodeur, writer, The New Yorker Magazine, author of Currents of Death (Simon and Schuster), and The Great Power Line Coverup (Little, Brown).

“I have never seen a set of epidemiological studies that remotely approached the weight of evidence that we're seeing with ELF [extremely low frequency] electromagnetic fields. Clearly there is something here." Martin Halper, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Director of Analysis and Support.

Drs. Raymond Neutra, Vincent DelPizzo and Geraldine Lee, who wrote the report, conclude that they "are inclined to believe" that EMFs are a cause of childhood leukemia, adult brain cancer, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and miscarriages.

Dr. Marino concludes that "the existing state of scientific evidence warrants the inference that EMFs can be a health risk and, for this reason, that steps ought to be taken to avoid exposure."

A working group assembled by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has unanimously concluded that power-frequency magnetic fields are possible human carcinogens.

The makeup of the IARC panel spanned all sides of the EMF controversy, from those who openly believe that EMFs promote cancer to industry consultants who are skeptical of any such connection. "We all agreed," said Dr. Larry Anderson. EMFs have now been formal1y designated "2B Possible Carcinogens.""There was a unanimous feeling about it," said Dr. Jan Stolwijk.

A working group of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), using the same IARC criteria, also classified EMFs as 2B possible human carcinogens, a view that NIEHS Director Kenneth Olden later endorsed in his report to Congress.

Page 6: Motorcyclist Discovers Cancer Risk ELF EMF Magnetic Field Radiation Emission Above Motorcycle Seats

The Office of Technology Assessment of the Congress of the United States recommends a policy of "prudent avoidance". Prudent avoidance means to measure fields and act to reduce exposure.

The NY State Dept. of Health does EMF tests for schools upon request and provides information on "prudent avoidance measures" as needed.

USA Today conducted a survey of 4,567 readers and reported that electromagnetic fields, or EMFs, are the number one environmental concern in America. "EMFs - always present near power lines and working electrical appliances - are linked to such diseases as leukemia and breast cancer."

Linet study researchers stated four times that there is a statistically significant increase in Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in children exposed to powerline magnetic EMFs in excess of 3Mg.

A new and innovative epidemiological study has found an up to six fold increased risk of spontaneous abortions among women exposed to magnetic fields of 16 mG or greater. The results “should have wide implications,” concludes Dr. DeKun Li, who led the study team at Kaiser Permanente’s research division in Oakland, CA.

Dr. David Carpenter, former Executive Secretary of the New York Power Lines Project and now Dean of the State of New York School of Public Health, is quoted by Ellen Sugarman as stating:

"I am now convinced that EMFs pose a health hazard. There is a statistical association between magnetic fields and cancer that goes beyond the shadow of reasonable doubt. I think there is clear evidence that exposure to EMFs increases the risk for cancer. This is most clear with leukemia and brain tumours, but in the residential studies, statistical significance increased for all kinds of cancer. And we're just beginning to have a whole body of evidence that reproductive cancers are increased by exposure."

Dr. David Carpenter, dean of public health at SUNY in Albany, N.Y., headed the utility industry's New York Power Lines Project, a five million dollar review of the carcinogenicity of magnetic fields. According to Dr. Carpenter, "The Savitz study changed my entire view of the field, and it has enormous implications." Fortune Magazine wrote: "Based of those results, he estimates that up to 30% of all childhood cancers may be attributable to ELF fields." "That's conservative," Dr. Carpenter added.

“This is really harming people."Dr. David Carpenter, Dean, School of Public Health, State University of New York, Albany.

Page 7: Motorcyclist Discovers Cancer Risk ELF EMF Magnetic Field Radiation Emission Above Motorcycle Seats

Dr. Russell Reiter believes that a variety of different cancers may be promoted by magnetic fields. he explained that "the suppression of melatonin by magnetic fields could result in a higher incidence of cancer in any tissue," This effect could clear up "one of the mysteries of the magnetic field/cancer issue," that is, "the large number of different types that have reportedly increased," he suggested.

Heart disease has also been implicated, according to a report in the July/August issue of Microwave News. EMF exposure can alter heart rhymes and may lead to elevated cardiac risks, according to Dr. Antonio Sastre of the Midwest Research Institute in Kansas city, MO.

Liburdy and his collaborator, Dr. Joan Harland, both of the Berkely National Lab have also found that 12 mG magnetic fields can block the growth inhibition of tamoxifen, a drug used to control breast cancer. The Battelle group confirmed this finding, too.

Decreased Melantonin and Breast Cancer - Researchers at the Pacific NW Lab in Richland, Washington, found that reduced concentrations of melatonin can spur breast cancer.

Tamoxifen: This is crucial information for anyone with breast cancer, or any form of cancer. Electromagnetic fields have been found to increase the growth rate of cancer and to block the anti-cancer action of melatonin, tamoxifen, calmodulin antagonist W-13 and antiestrogen ICI. Shivani Arjuna

Even a cursory review of the main data set shows a 53% increase in leukaemia incidence at magnetic field exposure levels above 2 mG; a 72% increase (which is statistically significant) above 3 mG; and a more than 600% increase at exposures of between 4 and 5 mG. Shivani Arjuna

Excerpts from comments of Cindy Sage, Sage Associates, California

There is a growing body of scientific evidence supporting an association between EMF exposure and many cancers, including breast cancer.

Studies on MCF-7 human breast cancer cells show EMF (magnetic field) exposure at 12 mG blocks the tumor-suppressing action of melatonin, causing cell proliferation of malignant cells.

Similar cell studies show the beneficial effect of tamoxifen is also blocked at 12 mG EMF (magnetic field) levels. This suggests action may be needed to assess whether the environment of women taking tamoxifen is highly EMF exposed. No such controls are now evident in either clinical trials of tamoxifen or for those on tamoxifen therapy.

Those taking tamoxifen as therapy should be advised to evaluate and consider reducing their EMF exposure.

Page 8: Motorcyclist Discovers Cancer Risk ELF EMF Magnetic Field Radiation Emission Above Motorcycle Seats

You can measure electromagnetic field levels in your house or workplace with a gauss meter.

Conclusive scientific evidence should not be required to establish reasonable interim policies for prudent avoidance of EMF exposure. Consensus of industry scientists should not be a prerequisite for action in determining when a causal link between EMF and breast cancer has been achieved.

The constellation of relevant scientific papers providing mutually-reinforcing evidence for an association between power-frequency electromagnetic fields (ELF-EMF) and breast cancer is strongly supported in the scientific literature.

ELF at environmental levels negatively affects the oncostatic effects of both melatonin and tamoxifen on human breast cancer cells. Numerous epidemiological studies over the last two decades have reported increased risk of male and female breast cancer with exposures to residential and occupational levels of ELF. Animal studies have reported increased mammary tumor size and incidence in association with ELF exposure.

ELF limits for public exposure should be revised to reflect increased risk of breast cancer at environmental levels possibly as low as 2 mG or 3 mG; certainly as low as 4 mG.

Discover Magazine postulated, aside from making our lives easier, is electricity also making our lives shorter? Perhaps a more important question is "Until more is known, what can we do to minimize the potential risks?"

Prof. M. Granger Morgan, a well-known expert at Carnegie Mellon University, says it certainly can't hurt to take simple steps. Prof. Morgan advocates "prudent avoidance". Hence, prudent avoidance means that we should avoid exposure to EMF when it is consistent with sound judgment.

Germany’s Radiation Protection Commission is recommending a policy of prudent avoidance.

In a report, the panel—known by its German acronym SSK—states that it has confidence in the ICNIRP standards. But it calls for “minimizing” exposures to both ELF and RF/MW EMFs to the extent “technically and economically reasonable,” especially in locations where people spend extended periods of time.

More frequently than guidelines, governments have adopted “prudent avoidance,” a concept introduced by M. Granger Morgan, H. Keith Florig, and Indira Nair at Carnegie Mellon University.

Page 9: Motorcyclist Discovers Cancer Risk ELF EMF Magnetic Field Radiation Emission Above Motorcycle Seats

While doing research for the New York State Power Lines Project Dr. Jerry Phillips and Dr. Wendell Winters discovered that human cancer cells proliferated like crazy when exposed to magnetic fields. As well, the exposed cells became increasingly resistant to the body's immune system. Drs. Phillips and Winters stated that their observations led them to believe that it was possible that magnetic fields stimulate the rate of cancer cell growth, or act as a cancer promoter.

In a major policy shift, the World Health Organization’s (WHO) International EMF Project has endorsed prudent avoidance.

The WHO advised that decisions on siting power lines should “consider ways to reduce people’s exposures.” The WHO also recommended that governments and industry should offer the public “suggestions for safe and low-cost ways to reduce exposures.” The advice is contained in a fact sheet on extremely low frequency electromagnetic fields (ELF EMFs) and cancer. The project’s new outlook follows the decision by an expert panel convened by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) to classify ELF EMFs as “possible human carcinogens” (see MWN, J/A01). IARC, which is based in Lyon, France, is part of the WHO.

In the absence of U.S. federal guidelines, seven states have issued their own regulations limiting electric and magnetic fields at the edge of the right of way for power lines. Other states are moving in this direction, as well, while adopting “prudent avoidance” policies.

Since its introduction, prudent avoidance has been adopted in Australia, Sweden, and several U.S. states, including California, Colorado, Hawaii, New York, Ohio, Texas, and Wisconsin.

In addition to leukemia in children, more recent studies have linked EMFs with new diseases. Loomis and Savitz of the University of North Carolina reported a doubling of the expected breast cancer rates for women in electrical trades aged 45-54.

Electric blankets create an AC magnetic field that penetrates about 6 or 7 inches into the body. Thus it is not surprising that an epidemiological study has linked electric blankets with miscarriages and childhood leukemia. This pioneering work was performed by Dr. Nancy Wertheimer and Ed Leeper, who originally discovered that magnetic fields were linked to childhood leukemia.

Occupational Risk Factors for Prostate Cancer- Occupations of patients with pathologically confirmed prostate cancer were interviewed. Increased risk for prostate cancer was associated with employment as aircraft fabricator, railway transport worker, metal product fabricator, structural metal erector, electrical power worker, and water transport worker. * All these occupations use equipment

Page 10: Motorcyclist Discovers Cancer Risk ELF EMF Magnetic Field Radiation Emission Above Motorcycle Seats

which is electrically run, and is producing EMFs, many of which are being held right in front of the abdominal area for use.

Cancer Rates Among English Electrical Workers- Compared to the normal population, there was an increase in malignant brain tumors for women, and all leukemia's and tumors for men.

Other studies have yielded alarming results. A Johns Hopkins study showed that the incidence of leukemia among telephone cable workers was 7 times greater than among other telephone company employees. A subsequent study of 1.5 million past and present employees of AT&T found that men working as cable splicers and central office technicians had 1.7 times the risk of dying from leukemia than men working at jobs with less exposure to EMF. This is startling, considering that the field these men are exposed to is, on the average, relatively low (4.3 milliGauss). As John Monahan of the Food and Drug Administration explains, "the effect is real. It is produced by a low-level magnetic field, but we don't yet know what the important parameters of the field are."

As reported in the Wall Street Journal, "recent research with human cells and laboratory animals, plus epidemiological studies, all have suggested that the fields do have biological effects, and that they may foster a number of medical problems, including cancer and miscarriage. Leonard Sagan, the radiation expert at the Electric Power Research Institute, says that the latest experiment is important because 'this is humans, not rats, who are apparently showing an effect'."

“We believe our results speak for an association between occupational exposure to magnetic fields and at least one type of leukemia" conclude the authors, led by Dr. Gilles Theriault of Montreal's McGill University.

They found that workers with above-average exposure to magnetic fields were three times more likely to develop acute myeloid leukemia than less-exposed workers. Acute myeloid leukemia is one of the most common types of leukemia among adults.

“My study convinced me that EMFs probably have a biological effect,” Li said. “We are entering a new chapter in the field of EMF epidemiology. There is more evidence that there is an association - the better conducted studies consistently show an association.

The U.S. Department of Transportation has been evaluating the health effects from EMF and Radio-Frequency Radiation (RFR) as associated with transportation systems over an emerging cross-modal issue. An emerging cross-modal transportation safety, environmental and health issue of growing national interest is the existence and nature of potentially adverse health effects from exposure to electric and magnetic fields (EMFs). Of special concern to the public

Page 11: Motorcyclist Discovers Cancer Risk ELF EMF Magnetic Field Radiation Emission Above Motorcycle Seats

and Congress are magnetic fields of Extremely Low Frequency (ELF’s, from 3 to 3000 Hz or 3 KHz), a spectral range including the power grid frequency of 60 Hz, and its harmonics.

"The National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP) committee charged with evaluating the potential health effects of electromagnetic fields (EMFs) has completed a draft report that calls for strong action to curtail the exposure of the U.S. population. "It took us nine years but we finally reached agreement," committee chair Dr. Ross Adey, of the Veterans Administration Hospital in Loma Linda, CA, told Microwave News.

A working group assembled by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has unanimously concluded that power-frequency magnetic fields are possible human carcinogens. "There was a unanimous feeling about it," said Dr. Jan Stolwijk. Dr.Maria Stuchly. Dr. Vincent DelPizzo believes that the cancer evidence is stronger than do any of the other panelists. He cast the only vote that there is "sufficient" human evidence for childhood leukemia, which implies that EMFs are known human carcinogens.  "I am sure that the childhood leukemia finding cannot be attributed to chance, bias or confounding," he said.

Dr. Rapp also tells of evidence that EMFs can increase the toxicity of chemicals by allowing them access to nerve cells.  She also reports research which shows that low-level magnetic fields can affect the blood-brain barrier and allow particles to enter the brain and disrupt normal function.

"...studies on cats, rats, and chick brain cells have shown that low frequency electromagnetic radiation interacts with brain activity and could cause a host of negative symptoms from heightened stress and depression, slowed reaction time, and learning disabilities to miscarriages, fetal deformities, and cancer."

Breast Cancer - Science News reported that risk is elevated by 43% for woman who work in high exposure fields.

In 1989, the Electric Power Research Institute praised the methodology of a power line study which linked leukemia, prostate and other cancers in young men with chronic exposure to magnetic fields.

In November, 1989, the Department of Energy reported that "It has now become generally accepted that there are indeed. Biological effects due to (magnetic) field exposure."

Dr. Magda Havas, a professor in the department of Environment and Resource Studies at Trent University in Peterborough, specializes in health effects linked to EMFs and develops programs to reduce exposures, especially in schools. She maintains that the interpretation of EMF research is both political and highly controversial. In her own review of the studies, Dr. Havas does find scientific

Page 12: Motorcyclist Discovers Cancer Risk ELF EMF Magnetic Field Radiation Emission Above Motorcycle Seats

support linking EMFs to various health effects in three lines of evidence — epidemiological studies, "in vivo" (animal) studies and "in vitro" (test tube) studies. Dr. Havas is a strong supporter of the precautionary principle in the case of EMFs and office equipment — that it’s "better to be safe than sorry". While avoiding all exposure to EMFs is impossible in an office, she advocates "prudent avoidance" — minimizing exposures.

Marion Telling has given us "the bottom line" -- the next generation will pay the price. (Wait 'til they try to sell those homes in ten or fifteen years -- after more people know the facts about EMF.)

In addition to the long-term health concerns, buying a house with high fields will be an economic disaster. In a few years, when power line radiation is as well known as asbestos and radon, a house with high fields will be practically impossible to sell. Already there are hundreds of lawsuits regarding EMFs and property devaluation.

When buying a home, it is important to check for EMFs. Homes "sold...for 30% less" when exposed to EMFs, as reported by the Wall Street Journal.

The US National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, (NIEHS), recently decided that extremely low frequency (ELF) electromagnetic fields should be regarded as possible human carcinogens. No doubt there will be an effort by the spin doctors to make this announcement impossible for the public to understand. Make no mistake this is a significant announcement from a prominent government health agency.

We can practice prudent avoidance of EMR as advocated by the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation and the United States Environmental Protection Agency. This basically involves identifying the sources of EMR around us and developing strategies to eliminate or avoid them.

A draft report prepared for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) generally endorses a 2 mG exposure limit. It would take effect immediately for new day care centers, schools and playgrounds, as well as for new transmission lines near existing housing. The report was funded by the EPA. Dr. Joe Elder, EPA's program officer for the NCRP study in Research Triangle Park, NC, called the committee's report "the first comprehensive review of the world's literature on EMF health effects." (1995)

Electromagnetic Fields (EMFs), the radiation emitted from the flow of electric current, has been found to be biologically active.

Causes changes at the cellular level. Laboratory rats exposed to elevated EMFs have higher rates of tumors and

more aggressive tumors than unexposed rats.

Page 13: Motorcyclist Discovers Cancer Risk ELF EMF Magnetic Field Radiation Emission Above Motorcycle Seats

Melatonin; EMFs have been found to affect melatonin (a basic human hormone) in animal studies.

Occupational studies have strongly linked EMFs to leukemia and also to breast and brain cancer.

Childhood leukemia rates have been associated with higher exposure to EMFs. Most studies find elevated risk at four times normal rates.

The National Council on Radiation Protection NCRP (USA) 1995

There is a connection between ELF EMF exposures and disruption of normal biological processes. There is a link between EMFs and –

Childhood and adult leukemia and brain cancer. Child deformities and other reproductive anomalies. Adverse nervous and hormonal responses causing disease. Incorrect development of the nervous system. Cancer and Tumor development. Gene mutation. Reduction of the natural defense response of T-Cells. Changes in psychosexual response. Melatonin reduction.

The evidence points to human health hazards in common exposures to EMFs, particularly magnetic fields exceeding 2mG and electric fields between 10-100 Volts per metre.

EMF LIMITS RECOMMENDED BUT NOT ACTED ON The National Council on Radiation Protection NCRP (USA) 1995

The NCRP recommends a 2mG exposure limit to magnetic EMFs. Over a three year period, exposures in existing homes schools and offices

should be reduced to 10mG. After six years, there should be an option to establish a 5mG limit. After ten years, a 2mG limit should be considered.

Extremely low frequency (ELF) EMFs easily penetrate tissues and cause virtually no sensory reactions.

ELF (below 300 Hz) EMFs interact strongly with biological systems, both electrically and magnetically. The magnetic field aspect of an ELF EMF penetrates the body without obstruction since the magnetic permeability of tissue equals that of air.

Dr. Nancy Wertheimer, a Ph.D. epidemiologist who has been studying EMFs for 20 years, has been looking at the epidemiological data in a different way -- she is trying to associate EMF levels with health rather than disease. The level she is

Page 14: Motorcyclist Discovers Cancer Risk ELF EMF Magnetic Field Radiation Emission Above Motorcycle Seats

coming up with is a cut off of 1 mG. Russian researchers claim that 1/1000ths of a mG should be the standard.

Dr. Robert Becker, an MD who has been studying the effects of EMFs for 20 years, states a 1 mG safety limit in his book Cross Currents.

EXCERPTS FROM COMMENTS OF PROFESSOR DENIS L. HENSHAW, UNIVERSITY OF BRISTOL, U.K. - THE BIOINITIATIVE REPORT 2007 LINKS.

Four major organizations now agree that magnetic fields are a possible carcinogen: The US National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), UK NRPB and the California Health Dept EMF Report all agree magnetic fields are a possible carcinogen.

There is now good scientific understanding of the way in which exposure to magnetic fields may increase the risk of a range of illnesses and further evidence is continuing to emerge. In particular, a body of studies in human populations has reported that magnetic fields at even low levels can disrupt the production in the pineal gland of the important hormone and natural anti-cancer agent melatonin. This may explain why a substantial body of studies have shown that exposure to magnetic fields may lead to increased risk of childhood leukaemia, adult brain cancer, miscarriage and depression. Our state of knowledge of the health risks of exposure to EMFs well exceeds that for some chemical carcinogens where strict regulatory action has been taken.

In July 2001, the California Health Department issued a major EMF report for public discussion citing an added risk of miscarriage, childhood leukaemia, adult leukaemia, adult brain cancer and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a form of motor neuron disease, as some of the health risks associated with exposure to electric and magnetic fields such as those that radiate from powerlines.

I regard the statement that IARC (2001) “considered the evidence for excess cancer risks of all other kinds in adults and children as inadequate” to be outdated. We now have the benefit of more recently published information, the California Health Department Report cited above suggesting links between magnetic field exposures and brain cancer and leukaemia in adults, as well as the recent reports below, in relation to prostate cancer and melanoma.

Charles et al. (2003) studied exposure to electromagnetic fields, polychlorinated biphenyls and prostate cancer mortality in electric utility workers in five large US electric utility companies. After adjustment for PCB exposure, race and active work status within the past two years, workers categorized in the highest 10% of EMF exposures were twice as likely to die from prostate cancer as those exposed to EMFs at lower levels; (odds ratio = 2.02; 95% CI: 1.34 – 3.04).

Page 15: Motorcyclist Discovers Cancer Risk ELF EMF Magnetic Field Radiation Emission Above Motorcycle Seats

There is also evidence of increased risk of certain adult cancers, especially brain tumours and leukaemia in relation to magnetic field exposures.

As I have already indicated, I strongly disagree with the view that the current body of evidence of adverse health effects associated with magnetic field exposure is insufficient to derive quantitative restrictions on exposure to EMFs.

Furthermore, the evidence of adverse health effects continues to increase and is doing so at an accelerating rate. Although scientists are reticent, even for childhood leukaemia, to regard the existing associations with ill-health conditions as causal, I argue here that is extremely difficult to see how future research will overturn the current body of knowledge. I therefore concur with the view expressed in the California Health Department Report that it is more likely than not that magnetic fields cause increased risk of a number of adverse health outcomes.

There is also evidence that the oncostatic properties of melatonin are themselves disrupted by magnetic fields.

As will be discussed in more detail later, melatonin is highly protective of oxidative damage to the haemopoietic system. This suggests that suppression of the production and disruption of the action of melatonin by magnetic fields could act to increase leukaemia risk. I therefore conclude that there is strong evidence for a causal association between magnetic field exposures and adult leukaemia. Professor Denis L. Henshaw.

Melatonin also is produced by the retina and, in vastly greater amounts, by the gastrointestinal system. In fact, 400 times more melatonin can be found in the gastrointestinal system than in the pineal gland or bloodstream….Melatonin can kill directly many different types of human tumor cells. It is a naturally produced cytotoxin, which can induce tumor cell death (apoptosis). In instances where the tumor has already established itself in the body, melatonin has been shown to inhibit the tumor’s growth rate. Melatonin exhibits natural oncostatic activity and inhibits cancer cell growth. Eileen M. Lynch, PhD. Oncology Research Scientist, 2004.

The amount of melatonin produced in the GI tract by enterochromaffin cells is 400 times greater than that produced by the pineal gland. Unlike pineal gland melatonin, GI melatonin is not influenced by light intensity but instead by food intake…. Enterochromaffin cells release melatonin into nearby blood vessels of the mucous membrane of the inner lining of the stomach and intestines. It is through these vessels that melatonin is transported into the blood stream from the gut. Some of the melatonin, however, remains in the GI tract to exert a protective action on the GI tissues. Dr. Robert Becker, noted for decades of research on the effects of electromagnetic radiation, has warned: "Even if we survive the chemical and atomic threats to our existence, there is the strong possibility that increasing electropollution could set in motion irreversible changes leading to our extinction before we are even aware of them. All life pulsates in time to the earth and our artificial fields cause abnormal reactions in all organisms. These energies are too dangerous to entrust forever to politicians, military leaders and their lapdog researchers."
