stewardship of Brisbane City Council, there is a new red tape-reducing planning scheme on the agenda for industrial areas that if approved, will make it quicker and easier for those of you intending to apply for planning permissions. In keeping with the shredding of red tape, read on to page 5 where Kellie gives a clear synopsis of what the Queensland Government made effective on 1 November – the new National Code of Practice for Light Vehicle Construction and

Modification – that allows for a much larger range of modifications to be certified by approved persons.

MTA Queensland member Emily Martin of Maranoa Mechanical in St. George (pages 8 & 9) gives us some insights into the company’s daily operations and employee development, and shares some tips she learned from a farmer on the topic of staff management. Emily has been the company director at the award winning business for the past six years.

Many people look forward to the New Year for a new start on old habits. What are you going to do? This is my final Viewpoint for 2012 so I trust you will forgive me if it is a little longer than

usual. As I prepare it in our new headquarters, I am reminded of memories of twelve months ago. Then, we were in engrossed in the pack up of the temporary Cannon Hill office for transit to our new headquarters at Eight Mile Plains. At the same time we were busy overseeing the fit-out of the new building.

The task was to commence service delivery to Members and the training curriculum from the new facility from the beginning of 2012. It was challenging and we succeeded. Now, the building has been opened by the Premier, The Hon Campbell Newman MP and named “The Sir Jack Brabham Automotive Centre of Excellence” and truly is the home of MTA Queensland. We are looking forward to a positive 2013 delivering to and for Members and providing our outstanding training curriculum to trainees and apprentices.

I say a heartfelt thank you to Members for their understanding as we attended to the logistics and other matters and events across the year.

Property Agents and Motor Dealers Act 2000In my last column I indicated that I was to meet with the Office of Fair Trading to discuss the specific legislation for motor dealers to replace the PAMD Act. Progress is being made and the understanding is that we can look forward to the new legislation in the New Year.

The QPS has warned that in these circumstances “service station staff have no authority to retain any item of property as security, and any attempt to do so could constitute a separate offence of stealing on the part of the service station attendant.” We will continue to work with the QPS on fuel theft and will keep members updated.

BCC New planning scheme: Brisbane Industrial Areas Dani Fioretti and I recently met with representatives of the City Planning and Sustainability section of the Brisbane City Council to discuss the development of

a new planning scheme for Brisbane industrial areas. The changes, which are still in the approval stage, will replace the current City Plan scheme and are designed to reduce red tape around planning processes making it quicker and easier for many businesses applying for planning permissions. The changes will also aim to protect dedicated industry areas from residential encroachment.

We will work closely with the Brisbane City Council to ensure that the interests of members are protected during this process. MTA Queensland will also assist by disseminating information about the changes to the automotive industry once they receive the necessary approvals (expected around

Drive-Offs“Drive offs” continue to be a worry for our Service Station & Convenience Store Association Members and it is not a local problem. In Victoria, the Australian Consumer and Competition Commission recently held a forum attended by fuel industry operators and police to discuss fuel drive-offs. A mooted possible remedy is pre-payment at the bowser. For our Members this is not the preferred option as it introduces difficulties for the consumer and substantial costs for the service station operators.

We have been liaising with the Queensland Police Service (QPS) on drive-offs and another worrying trend: “failure to pay”. This is when a person fills up

March 2013). I will keep members updated as more information comes to hand. More information about the progress of the changes can be found online by searching “Brisbane's draft new City Plan”. Federal Small Business

CommissionerIn submissions relating to Federal small business matters, we supported the concept of an Australian Small Business Commissioner. As from 2 January 2013, the inaugural Australian Small Business Commissioner, Mark Brennan, will start his position. He will work closely with the Australian Government to provide quality advice on issues that impact small business.

InformationThe Fair Work Ombudsman has published a Fair Work Handbook to assist employers better understand the Fair Work Act and their obligations

under workplace laws. It provides an overview of the aspects of the Fair Work Act in which employers

must be familiar. It is available from the website of the Fair Work Ombudsman‘s “My business” page.

Also, the Fair Work Ombudsman has released the findings of its national education and compliance campaign in the vehicle repair and maintenance industry. This was designed to increase employer awareness of workplace laws, including the Vehicle Manufacturing, Repair, Services and Retail Award 2010. Members can access a copy of the

National vehicle repair and maintenance campaign report on the Fair Work Ombudsman website.

2012 but there will be a 6-month transitional period. This is to allow vehicle owners, modifiers and approved persons to become familiar with the new code and to finalise any modifications commenced under the Code of Practice.

I refer interested Members to the TMR website which provides information about the NCOP and related changes that have been made. TMR has also published a number of Vehicle Standards Instructions summarising the changes and also available online. Remember too, that our MTA Queensland Member Services team is available to help.

Red-tape reduction measureMember’s attention is drawn to a sensible red-tape reduction measure. The Queensland Government has adopted the National Code of Practice for Light Vehicle Construction and Modification (NCOP), which was developed by all Australian registration authorities in consulation with key industry organisations.

The NCOP will replace the existing code of practice, the Code of Practice – Light Vehicles, and will allow for a much larger range of modifications to be certified by Approved Persons, removing the need to apply to the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) for approval. Under the previous rules, the owner of a vehicle was technically required to obtain an approval for any modification that was made to a vehicle, even when the modification was only installing an accessory such as a CB radio, alarms, roof racks, etc.

The NCOP commenced operation on 1 November

The Fair Work Ombudsman has published a Fair Work Handbook to assist employers better understand the Fair Work Act and their obligations under workplace laws.

October motor vehicle salesMotor Vehicle sales decreased in October by 2.8% with the sale of 20,048 units. Although down compared with the previous month, current sales are much better than the 18,906 sales of October 2011. The outlook seems positive as the Westpac Melbourne Institute Index of Consumer Sentiment increased by 5.2% in November and we can still hold hope that the Reserve Bank will cut the cash rate at its December meeting.

Christmas and New Year GreetingsReflecting on 2012, it has been one of substantial achievements, in each of which we all can take pride.

When we started, our vision was to be the leading independent automotive service centre in St George and surrounds” said

company director, Emily Martin.

“We wanted to be professionals by offering excellent customer service and superior technical expertise.

“Our plans were to expand our range of automotive services and products from the small base we started with – an underdeveloped Repco Authorised Service Centre," she added.

From the out set, the owners have taken a whole of business approach – first in identifying the immediate challenges the business faced then piecing together targeted solutions that would enable Maranoa Mechanical to fulfil its vision.

Impacting the automotive industry as a whole and in particular businesses in rural Queensland, ‘skills shortage’ – as a result of mining, natural disasters and migration to urban areas - was a key

element in Maranoa Mechanical’s fresh approach to overcoming this challenge. Immediate resolutions undertaken by the business included offering young apprentices a career pathway; offering mature aged tradesmen the opportunity to get their skills recognised; up skilling existing staff; and expanding the service offerings of the business.

“For example, we became accredited for air conditioning, bought a tow truck and took on the RACQ contract, took on Ironman 4x4 distributorship, took on RACQ Autoglass (windscreens) and targeted log book servicing and commercial fleets,” Ms. Martin explained.

In addition, the owners have had extensive experience in building a skilled team at Maranoa Mechanical.

“We sponsored a qualified technician on a 457 work visa from overseas,” Ms. Martin said.

“The process was quite long and we invested considerable time in preparing

the candidate and his partner for life in a rural town in western Queensland.

“Prior to their arrival, they were very keen for a ‘tree change’ and intended to use the opportunity to study and live a quieter life.

“Ultimately, he left for all the reasons we highlighted as potential challenges for people moving from the city to the country.

“That’s not to say we wouldn’t go through the process again for specialist positions, but would proceed with caution,” she said.

The business has also employed a ‘mature age’ auto electrician from Zimbabwe who came to Australia as a permanent resident.

“We helped him go through the process of getting his skills recognised in Australia by bringing in the assessor from Brisbane, which meant we were able to keep Andre in the workshop.

MaranoaMechanical

Since Emily Martin and Brad Goldthorpe took ownership of Maranoa Mechanical six years ago, the St George-based MTA Queensland member has gone from strength to strength including expanding its mechanical services, focusing on staff development and being awarded the prestigious Repco Authorised Service Outstanding Customer Service Award 2012.

“We are very lucky that RTO’s (Registered Training Organisations) are willing to come to St George to teach apprentices in the workplace.

"Otherwise, apprentices would have go to Brisbane for up to a 7 week block per year to do theory,” said Ms. Martin.

Maranoa Mechanical also makes use of the local high school work experience program as well as the school based apprenticeship program for recruitment purposes.

“We remain focused on offering young apprentices a career pathway with plenty of opportunities for experience, qualifications and responsibility," Ms Martin said.

“For example, there’s the opportunity to acquire a truck licence and gain an RACQ tow truck operator’s certification.

“In-house Repco technical training is available in addition to apprenticeship course work.

"After the first trade qualification, employees can go on to achieve air conditioning certification, road worthy examiner status, and now a second trade – auto electrical.

"There’s also the opportunity to train in a Foreman’s role and the chance to run the business in our absence. This all occurs in a culture of ‘opportunity with responsibility’, but without being incriminated for mistakes when learning, which is always under close supervision for quality assurance purposes,” Ms. Martin explained.

In addition to mechanical training, Maranoa Mechanical also gave three of its administrative staff the opportunity to gain a Cert III in Business Management to recognise their existing skills and gain some new insights.

MTA Queensland membership has enabled the business to stay on top of current legislation that affects employer and employee, as well as being kept in the loop on training and assessment options.

“Over the past six years we have really appreciated and valued the Industrial Relations services that are provided to members,” Ms. Martin said.

“The Member Bulletins and Federal Bulletins with award information have been invaluable, as are my long phone calls to Ted Kowalski.

“I also attended a workshop presented in Toowoomba last year by Ted. It is great to have such knowledge literally a phone call away. More recently we have asked MTAQ to complete a skills assessment for one of our technicians, and auto electrical trade training. We also value the general industry advocacy work that Ben Chesterfield does,” she said.

“It is difficult to define our proudest business achievement, as we have enjoyed many incremental milestones and awards as part of our journey.

“We feel most proud witnessing our team everyday, looking professional, delivering exceptional customer service and technical expertise.

“When we reflect on each individual and their skills when they commenced employment with us, and their capability now, we feel proud of each of them. Likewise, we feel pride when a customer expresses their gratitude for a job well done.

“A very smart horticultural farmer in far western NSW once shared with me his philosophy on staff management, and it has stuck with me. To do this you need to have good reporting systems in place, so that you can measure the gross profit on different products and

services. Once you know this, you can then decide which ones are worthwhile expending resources on to maximize your overall gross and net profit.

Here are a few examples of ‘real’ clients we’ve worked with, where we have improved their ‘top line’… as well as the ‘bottom line’:

One client, an electrical contractor, hadn’t increased their hourly charge out rate for the past six years! This was due to their concern they wouldn’t be competitive and win jobs. Now the market is starting to pick up a bit,

they agreed they could justify a small increase of $5 per hour. They have 15 staff that are charged out and this small change will add an extra $116,000 onto their bottom line! By looking at their job management reporting we also discovered some of their staff were not as productive as they could be on jobs. By focusing on improving productivity they are able to get jobs done quicker, which gives them more time to be charging out on other jobs.

Lack of productivity not only costs the hourly rate you pay the staff, it’s an hourly charge out rate you can’t charge another client for that time.

Another example is a Veterinary Clinic who employed quite a few new vets. By analyzing the charge per customer per vet, they were able to identify that some of the newer vets were charging out less than the average amount. Training was provided to these vets to improve their confidence in being able to charge out the right amount for their expertise. The increased charges went straight to the ‘bottom line’.

A transport company was delivering a service to a general type of customer at a less than desirable margin. In order to improve their margin we looked for a more affluent type of customer, who would be prepared to pay more. Points to consider are

1. This type of customer demands excellent quality service – could they deliver and what would it cost, and therefore how much did we have to charge to achieve a good margin? We carefully calculated all the costs associated to ensure our price delivered a good profit.

2. We considered where they were geographically and if there were any obstacles or extra costs to servicing them. These were taken into account in our costing.

3. We differentiated ourselves from our competition by delivering more personalized sales and service. The more time we spent with them the

more we found out about what they wanted and the better they could gauge our quality of service. When our quote is received it’s not just one of three from suppliers that they haven’t met.

In all of the examples above analysis was required to identify what was happening within the business. The analysis comes from good reporting systems. There’s an old saying ‘You can’t manage what you can’t measure’.

Lack of productivity not only costs the hourly rate you pay the staff, it’s an hourly charge out rate you can’t charge another client for that time.

Systems for measuring are so easily accessible nowadays, with a myriad of ‘cloud solutions’ available, that cost much less than old-fashioned desktop software. Some systems cost as little as $50 per month! In our experience they can deliver hundreds of times their cost back in increased productivity and profit.

The key to benefiting from systems is to ensure they are set up right from the start, to measure the right things. Sometimes professional help is required to get this right and well worth the investment for the future of the business.

Simon and Lisa Thomas, the UK husband and wife team embarking on the epic ‘2 Ride The World’

planet circumnavigation challenge stopped by the Australian Motorcycle Expo Melbourne in late November and shared stories of their journey to date.

They left their home base in May 2003, and have covered 382,000km through 77 countries of a planned

Braking system impresses city government

A landmark trial of a new heavy vehicle braking system has proven a great success for the

City of Swan, WA.

City Mayor, Charlie Zannino, said he was very pleased with the results from the first six months of testing.

"The trial included fitting two City waste and recycling vehicles with the Sealed Integrated Braking System (SIBS) with the aim of improving the safety and lifespan, and hence operating costs, of the truck brakes," he said.

The SIBS system is a fully enclosed, single rotor, high-speed wet brake that has been used extensively over the past 10 years in commercial applications within the Australian mining industry.

"This has been used in other industries, but has never previously been tested in waste management vehicles," Mayor Zannino said.

“The first six months of testing has received overwhelmingly positive feedback from both our fleet manager and our drivers operating the trial waste management vehicles.

The Bruce Highway: “An absolute priority”

Federal Minister for Transport and Infrastructure, Anthony Albanese, recently

reconfirmed his commitment to accelerated upgrading of Queensland’s Bruce Highway.

Speaking on radio station 4BC following the fatal accident on the Highway near Childers that claimed five lives, Mr. Albanese said that despite all states needing extra Federal road funding, the “Bruce Highway is an absolute priority.”

Mr. Albanese confirmed that the Federal Government had contributed $2.8 billion over six years and that there are nine major projects currently underway on the Bruce Highway, employing directly and indirectly about 3,000 people, with another three projects due to commence before the end of this year.

“In addition, we’re putting in another $170 million this year for safety measures. What that does is things like overtaking lanes – in this

case there’s 52 – fixing up 101 separate dangerous black spots and building 25 new rest areas for heavy vehicles,” he said.

“As well as that we’re upgrading 11 existing rest areas, really trying to make sure that the facilities are there that encourage heavy vehicle drivers to take appropriate rest."

Mr. Albanese spoke of a holistic approach to highway safety.

“Infrastructure is one of the three components to improving road safety. We do need better infrastructure. But we also need proper regulation, and we’re doing that through the establishment of a tribunal for heavy vehicles so that if there are unsafe practices, safe rates will be enforced. I think will make a difference over a period of time.

"And of course the third element is driver behavior, education about safe driving, not speeding. Those sorts of measures are undertaken not just by every level of government but of course by the community as well,” he concluded.

“While the prime advantages are the significantly lower brake wear and improved safety, the testing has highlighted a number of other benefits with the new SIBS system, notably more control and confidence in the braking system.

“There’s also the added bonus of no brake squeak, which is always a welcome relief for both drivers and residents," he added.

The trial has been so successful, the City is investigating the possibility of extending the use of the SIBS across other vehicles in the City fleet.

The results indicated only minimal wear whereas a standard truck would be close to or past its wear limit at this point.

"After six months of the trial, the brake pads show very low rates of wear, which should result in greatly reduced brake service down time and costs for the vehicles," the Mayor said.

At the three-quarter mark of the year, Toyota has a practically insurmountable lead of 73,700 sales over its nearest rival - or more than twice the margin it held at the same stage in 2011.

So far this year, Toyota dealers have sold more than 159,111 cars, SUVs and light-commercial vehicles to local buyers.

The total is 21.1 per cent ahead of the same stage last year - a growth rate that is more than double the pace of the overall market.

It means Australians have bought an average of 580 new Toyota vehicles every day during the first nine months of 2012.

That is almost 270 vehicles a day higher than those delivered by dealers of the next-best brand.

In addition to providing details from the National Personal Property Securities Register, the report can confirm whether a car has been written-off, stolen, suffered flood or storm damage and whether the odometer readings are accurate.

Best-selling brandIn the new car market, Toyota is on track for its 10th consecutive year as Australia's best-selling automotive brand.

It includes an additional comprehensive 12-months/50,000km used-car warranty that is valid across Australia at any of Toyota's 280 dealership points.

Vehicles can only be certified as a Toyota Certified Used Vehicle after undergoing a minimum 90-point quality assurance inspection, including mechanical and appearance reconditioning.

For hybrid vehicles, specific examinations include key hybrid components, such as the hybrid transaxle, control modules and battery.

The vehicle history report, which enables customers to confirm the vehicle has clear title, is provided by Australian online automotive bureau Carhistory.

Toyota launches ‘used car’ brand; stays at top in new car sales

Toyota Australia in late September launched a new brand that will provide factory-backed

reassurance for people buying pre-owned Toyota cars.

The Toyota Certified Used Vehicles program provides added inspection and warranty coverage plus 12 months' roadside assistance on eligible used Toyota vehicles.

The program, for vehicles less than four years' old with less than 100,000 km on the clock, includes a vehicle history report.

LandCruiser Prado is a standout contributor with sales up 56.5 per cent to 13,239 - already well ahead of the 10,849 sold for the whole of last year.

Other significant sales increases compared with the same period last year include Tarago (34 per cent), Kluger (32.2 per cent), HiLux 4x4 (23 per cent), Camry (22.9 per cent) and RAV4 (22.7 per cent).

Recall As part of a worldwide campaign, Toyota Australia has announced a recall on certain Corolla, Kluger, RAV4, Yaris, Aurion and Camry vehicles built between 2006 and 2010.

The recall is due to the power window master switch, located on the driver's armrest, not operating smoothly (sticky feel). This is due to the non-uniform application of lubricating grease resulting in wear to the internal sliding contact points. In some instances, the switch may become inoperative.

In the worst case, if a commercially available lubricant has been applied to the switch in an attempt to rectify this operation, the switch assembly may overheat and melt.

This recall is a precautionary measure. The switch will be checked mechanically and electrically for correct operation, then specialised electrical grease will be applied to ensure it operates smoothly when pressed.

Toyota expects only a small number of vehicles will require the power window electrical circuit board to be replaced.

The National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council (NMVTRC) has launched a new online resource to

help motorcycle riders understand and mitigate the risk of becoming a victim of theft.

Protectyourbike.com.au was launched on Sunday 28 October as part of the NSW’s Sutherland Shire Council’s motorcycle safety

event, Breakfast Torque.

The event brought together volunteer, charitable, private and government organisations to promote safety within the motorcycling community and was attended by over 1,000 motorcycle riders and enthusiasts.

In addition to providing motorcyclists with a range of information including theft prevention tips, reports and statistics on theft and latest news, protectyourbike.com.au features online mapping tools which allows users to discover the number of motorcycles ‘stolen’ and ‘stolen not recovered’ in their local area over the past financial year. The site features both a national and metropolitan Sydney-based version of the mapper, which provides detailed information on motorcycle thefts including theft location and the proportion of registered versus unregistered bikes stolen, up to 90kms out from the Sydney CBD.

Over 8,000 motorcycles were stolen in Australia in 2011/12 and they now make up over a quarter of all vehicles ‘stolen not recovered’.

The NMVTRC’s Executive Director, Ray Carroll, explained that while it may come as a surprise, around 60 per cent of motorcycles stolen are taken from the home and will most likely never be recovered.

“The recreational nature of motorcycle riding means that bikes are most often at home when the owner is not,” Mr. Carroll said.

“Therefore riders need to take extra precautions to ensure their motorcycles are properly secured in garages or behind locked gates at home,” he said.

• A total of 8,036 motorcycles were stolen in Australia in the 2011/12 financial year, representing a rise of 4 per cent from the previous 12 months.

• Of these, 3,418 (43 per cent) were recovered and 4,618 (57 per cent) were not recovered.

• Motorcycle theft made up 13 per cent of all thefts and over a quarter (26 per cent) of all vehicles stolen not recovered in the financial year.

• Western Australia had the highest number of motorcycle thefts (2,144) followed by Queensland (1,704), Victoria (1,623) and New South Wales (1,622).

• Where theft location was known, 61 per cent of motorcycles were stolen from the home compared with just 13 per cent stolen from the street.

• Where the engine capacity was known, the majority of motorcycles stolen were 50 cc or less (23 per cent), indicating that a large number of motor scooters or ‘toy’ bikes are stolen in Australia. Following this was bikes with an engine capacity of between 201 and 250 cc (20 per cent).

• Newer model motorcycles manufactured between 2000 and 2009 are the most common theft targets (65 per cent).

• Overall, motorcycle theft has remained relatively stable when compared with five years ago, increasing by 2 per cent and now making up a slightly higher proportion of all thefts from 2007/08. Motorcycles stolen recovered increased 11 per cent over the same time period and the volume of bikes stolen not recovered fell 1 per cent.

While it may come as a surprise, around 60 per cent of motorcycles stolen are taken from the home and will most likely never be recovered.

While the difference is not noticeable on some vehicles, the finely tuned variation in harmonics balance between

the engine and gearbox is completely lost by this practice. This leads to the eventual wearing of gears to more expensive major drivetrain problems over the long term.

This practice leads to higher eventual costs not only for the current owner of the vehicle and future owners if left undetected, but also for their repairers who are presented with a vehicle with repeated identical gearbox issues in many cases. Repairers have been known to have replaced gears repeatedly under their own repair warranty, before making enquiries with component suppliers like Schaeffler Automotive Aftermarket to advise on other possible causes.

This is exactly what happened to Wagga Wagga (NSW) based transmission specialist, Doug Kinder from Advanced Transmissions.

“We have a customer with a Mazda BT-50 who came to us having lost 5th gear. We dismantled the gearbox and replaced the gear and then, exactly 8,000 kilometres later, the customer was back with the same problem. Wanting to do the right thing we then replaced the gear at our cost and in another 8,000 kilometres exactly, the

car was back with the same issue. This then happened again a further 8,000 kilometres down the track. We then started to ask questions and discovered that the original LuK Dual Mass Flywheel (DMF) had been replaced by a solid flywheel which is not specified for that car, but comes at a lower cost for the mechanic to replace,” Mr. Kinder explained.

for the very purpose of achieving total balance between the engine and gearbox harmonics. While more expensive than solid flywheels, the long-term cost of replacing the correct component far outweighs the labour and component costs of returned customers along with the greater problems that this practice can cause down the track.

Mr. Kinder said that he has since seen many of these incorrect flywheel replacements in his workshop.

“We have also had situations where customers have gone to the vehicle manufacturer who will not replace broken gears or other components under warranty as soon as they have seen that the dual mass flywheel had been replaced by a lower cost, non OE specified solid flywheel.”

One of the biggest problems with replacing a dual mass flywheel incorrectly with a lower cost solid flywheel is that in most cases there is no audible difference or vibration change. The driver cannot sense the harmonics involved. But in time, as experienced by Doug Kinder's customer, expensive gear replacements needed to be made not

once but on three occasions, all for not simply replacing the correct dual mass flywheel.

“The LuK Dual Mass Flywheel is no more difficult to fit than a solid flywheel,” said Mr. Kinder.

“It is purely skimping on cost and it does not give the customer the flywheel needed and specified to ensure long and trouble free engine and gearbox performance. We even checked the history of the gearbox we were working on and it has no history of gear failures of any kind over many years of operation, as long as it is fitted with the manufacturer specified dual mass flywheel,“ he added.

Repairers should also take note of the cost to them once this practice has

taken place. In this single Advanced Transmissions case, three gears were replaced at a cost of approximately $500 each, plus one day of labour each time. No business can afford such returns, so it should be normal to always check that if a specific model's original specifications call for a dual mass flywheel, that this is in fact what has been fitted to the car. Reason being that in Doug Kinder’s case, they did not replace the flywheel originally, this had been done incorrectly elsewhere, yet the cost of sorting out the problem became his.

With more and more cars on Australia’s roads being fitted with LuK Dual Mass Flywheels as original equipment, this can be a serious problem for repairers in the future if not quickly identified.

MIT Technical Trainer James Dixon said that Logan loves the challenges of automotive mechanical situations and regularly takes on projects outside of work to further develop his skills.

“With the BMW he rebuilt, it also had extensive front end damage and over the course of several months through information he gleaned from panel beaters and spray painters, Logan restored the vehicle back to mint condition,” James said.

“Logan is always keen to learn new skills whether it is in a training session or through information-gathering on his own.

“With his tenacity and solid work ethic, Logan is set up for a great future in the automotive industry,” he added.

Business owner and MTA Queensland member, Carl Mackey, regained Logan’s services four months later via a gradual return to full time mechanical work, albeit 5 months behind in his apprenticeship program.

MIT Technical Trainer James Dixon devised a plan to get Logan back on track, which set the pair to knuckle down with extra work that has paid off – Logan is now ahead of the game and is on track to finish his apprenticeship early.

“With the support of my mentor and trainer and dedication towards my learning, I was soon caught up and ahead of my scheduled studies timetable by 5 months,” Logan said.

An abnormal fear of both thunder and lightning is called astraphobia, a phobia shared by people and animals.

Acrophobia: Fear of HeightsAcrophobia is an excessive fear of heights and manifests as severe anxiety. A person could have an attack just walking up stairs or climbing a ladder. Sometimes the fear is so great a person can't move. Acrophobia can create a dangerous situation for someone who has it. An anxiety attack can make it extremely difficult to safely get down from whatever high place triggered the attack.

Aerophobia: Afraid to FlySomeone who has aerophobia is afraid of flying. The phobia generally develops after a person has a traumatic experience involving an airplane, such as going through extreme turbulence or witnessing another passenger have a

Major step forward in electric motorsport

Toyota Motorsport GmbH (TMG) has continued its record-breaking success with the

TMG EV P002 by setting a new electric-car record on the legendary 20.8km Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit in Germany.

Using TMG's motorsport-tuned electric powertrain, driver Jochen Krumbach set a lap time of 7mins 22.329secs, breaking the

electric record set by TMG in August 2011 by over 25 seconds.

This achievement marks the second milestone for TMG's electric powertrain this year following its new record at Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in Colorado, United States.

As with the Pikes Peak success, TMG's latest electric milestone used pioneering off-board battery-to-battery charging technology.

The TMG DC Quick Charger was developed in partnership with Schneider Electric GmbH to meet the

challenge of recharging an electric racecar at tracks without reliable access to grid power.

Mounted in the rear of a Toyota HiAce van, the TMG DC Quick Charger uses Schneider Electric's EV Link

technology and includes a 42kWh lithium-ion battery, which can be charged direct from the AC power grid.

After an overnight charge, the TMG DC Quick Charger is able to deliver high levels of power quickly to a battery-based electric car without additional installation or infrastructure, making it the perfect solution for electric motorsport.

Ludwig Zeller, TMG General Manager Electrics and Electronics said that since their Nürburgring record last year, that have developed their electric powertrain to deliver more power, more consistently, over a longer distance by managing the temperature of batteries, motors and inverter.

“Pikes Peak was a clear illustration of the improvements and we have now reinforced that at the Nürburgring,” Mr. Zeller said.

“But this achievement is not only about on-track performance; we are also very proud of the DC Quick Charger which again provided a reliable power supply in a remote location.

"This is an aspect of electric motorsport which has not been discussed at length but it is very significant; electric race cars need to be charged and it is a challenge to have the right infrastructure at race tracks, particularly temporary street circuits.

"Together with our partners at Schneider Electric, we have developed a solution to charge a race car literally anywhere in the world. This, along with the TMG EV P002 powertrain, represents a major step forward for electric motorsport," he explained.

The TMG DC Quick Charger was developed in partnership with Schneider Electric GmbH to meet the challenge of recharging an electric racecar.

“The piece de resistance is the 4km one-way circuit which has just had drainage and bitumen works done by the Ipswich City Council, allowing us to eliminate any two-way traffic spots for larger races whilst keeping technically challenging corners, up and down grades and a section on the drag strip in play,” he added.

Ipswich mayor Paul Pisasale said council was pleased to support this new partnership between two key sporting organisations in the Ipswich area.

“Funding from Ipswich City Council enabled works to upgrade existing internal roads and in the near future installation of a new gate to further improve safety during cycling events. Ipswich Cycling Club now has a ready-made circuit with access to amenities for both competitors and spectators,” Cr Pisasale said.

”This is a win-win for cycling and Willowbank Raceway,” he said.

Cycling club calls Willowbank home

Willowbank Raceway has undertaken a joint venture with Ipswich City Council

and Ipswich Cycling Club, making Queensland’s premier drag racing facility the home of cycling in Ipswich.

Under the three x three year term entered into recently, which follows on from 12 months of an informal arrangement, the Ipswich Cycling Club will conduct races at Willowbank Raceway several times each month on Sunday mornings.
