• Pat ia la is one of the FAMOUS ci t ies of Punjab.

• I t was founded by Baba Ala Singh in the mid of 1 8 th Centur y

Old Moti bagh palace

• Archi tectura l ly and histor ica l ly the Old Mot i Bagh Palace com

commands an important posi t ion in the history of Pat ia la

• I t was bui l t dur ing the re ign of Maharaja narendra Singh in 1 8

at a cost of Rs . 5 lakhs as a complex to serve as a p leasure pa

• The construct ion got completed dur ing the re ign of Maharaja bSingh in the ear ly years of 2 0 th Centur y.

• Designed on the pat tern of Shal imar Gardens

of Lahore, wi th terraces and wat er channels , i t funct ioned as the r

for royal fami l ies of Pat ia la .

• In 1 9 6 11i t was donated to government of india by maharaja yadven

and converted to neta j i subhas nat ional inst i tute of sports o

Pat ia la .961

• The bui ld ing was restored complete ly and the palace started bein

an administrat ive bui ld ing in the campus.

• The bui ld ing st i l l s tands beaut i fu l ly in the inst i tute and is a

example of Pat ia la ’s her i tage.

• The bui ld ing accommodates of f ices, gymnasium, l ibrary and

c lassrooms present ly .



• * I t is a three stor ied bui ld ing wi t h level d i f ference and massiv

arched

openings and ornamental gr i l ls , Rajasthani s tyle jharokha

chattr ies and crowning domes.

• * I t has an axia l ly symmetr ica l p lan and interspersed t re l l is -work

• The Old Mot i Bagh palace has a s imple l inear layout .

• To understand the spat i a l de l ineat ion more c lea r ly, the bui ld ing h

div ided into a , b and c wings.

• The centra l wing is “b” is f lanked by landscaped Courts ; Court - 1 an

which further adorn to the palace.

• The main bui ld ing consists of two f loors . At present the entry inbui ld ing is very wel l def ine wi t h a 3 7 5m long and 5m wide meta l led

front .



• The palace is entered through 8m wide sandstone plat form in f ront

running a long the northwest facade wi th couple of s teps f rom the a

road, a lso act ing as a p l inth protect ion.

• The wings a and c are the mirror image of each other having di f fer

sub sect ions for part icular need.

• The layout is very wel l organised and the grand and a i ry atmospher

great sense of grande ur and royal ty.



• The c i rculat ion of the place is very wel l def ined.

• Every room is connected v ia wel l l i t and wide corr i dors . The corr id

into hal ls and wider corr idors

• The vert ica l c i rculat ion is conf ined by str a ight f l ight and dog le

sta i rcases.

• There are spira l s ta i rcases at the ends of the bui ld ing w hich are pre

a vulnerable state .
