Employee of the Month

March 2016

James Garmon(Marisu’s Message Corner)

2

The biggest celebration of the month is Mother’s Day. Ask any member who has been to the Mother’s Day brunch, and they will tell you it is the best in Pasadena. So, make your reservation now for Mother’s Day Brunch on Sunday, May 8.

Last February 3rd, we broke ground for the Rath al Fresco Pavilion and Gardens. The start of the actual work began on Tuesday, February 23rd, when the concrete slab bordering the club’s herb garden was broken to pieces. The loud roar of the truck and the thunder coming from the machinery to break the slab was music to my ears. We are on our way! The entire area was cleared of all the small bushes and the herb garden had to be relocated.

The pictures below will tell the story.

To see more photos and keep abreast of the progress, please visit The Athenaeum website (athenaeum.caltech.edu), select “Dining”, followed “Rath Al Fresco”, and then “Rath Al Fresco Pavilion Construction Update.”

The Rath al Fresco opens Friday, May 27 this year. See you on the lawn. Bar opens at 5:00pm.

I look forward to seeing you all at The Athenaeum. Please drop by my office when you are next at the club.

Marisu JimenezGeneral Manager

Our employee of the month for March 2016 is James Garmon. James has been with The Athenaeum for three and a half years and this is his first time being honored as employee of the month.

James was born and raised in San Francisco. He later moved to Las Vegas where he worked as a cook at Caesar’s Palace, Carol’s Restaurant, and Club Fortune. After many years of living in Las Vegas, James moved to Los Angeles to be closer to family. As The Athenaeum’s Lead Steward, James is responsible for maintaining the club’s china, glass, & silver. James’ positive attitude and willingness to work hard make him the best choice as our March Employee of the Month.

James and his wife Angela, have two children: Se’maj (3) and James II (2). James also enjoys working on his two vintage cars; a 1977 ACM Gremlin and a 1981 Buick Regal.

Congratulations, James, on a job well done!

On March 14, 2016, Jacob Good (PhD candidate in Chemistry) and Marissa Casados celebrated their first wedding anniversary – yes, they were married on Einstein’s birthday last year on pi day (3.14.15) at The Athenaeum. To memorialize their very special wedding, Marissa and Jacob decided that it was better to give than receive; they contributed to The Athenaeum’s building projects with a gift of $4,000. “We know it's not much but we hope that we will be able to continue contributing for many years. The Athenaeum is truly the most beautiful place in the world and we are so happy and grateful for the memories we got to make on our big day. Cheers to building more memories and to building a phenomenal new space at our beloved home away from home!” We would like to congratulate Dr. Jacob Good who successfully defended his thesis on March 18! We are very grateful for the thoughtful and generous gift from this wonderful young couple and wish Jacob our best as he prepares to officially receive his doctorate degree this June.
