    Facts for Students Mothers Day & Fathers Day

    Mothers Day and Fathers Day are specialdays when we can celebrate the specialpeople in our lives. They can be your mother,father, grandma, aunt, uncle, a family friendor even a teacher.

    Mothers throughout historyHow do you celebrate Mothers Day? Do youmake breakfast in bed for your mum, or giveher a card or gift? Although these are common things to do in Australia today,mothers have been celebrated in many different ways for a very long time.

    Ancient times

    In ancient times (thousands of years ago), many cultures would celebrate a mothergoddess whom they thought of as the mother of everyone.

    In ancient Egypt, Isis was worshipped as a mother goddess and in Greece theyworshipped a goddess named Rhea.

    Festivals to celebrate mother goddesses were usually held in Spring becauseit represents new life and fertility. An example of one such celebration was theRoman festival of Hilaria that honoured the mother goddess Cybele.

    In many places around the world, Mothers Day is still celebrated in Spring, but in

    Australia we celebrate it in Autumn.

    Mothering Sunday

    During the 1600s in England, the fourth Sunday of Lent (the time just beforeEaster)became known as Mothering Sunday. On this day Christians honouredMary, the mother of Jesus, by decorating churches with flowers and jewels.

    Soon, the Mothering Sunday celebration began to include the celebration ofactual mothers too. On this day, maids and servants were allowed to travel home

    to visit their mothers. Often they would bake a simnel cake, filled with spices andfruit, as a gift. Families would eat lots of food and give small presents to their mothers.

    How did Mothers Day begin?Two women, Julia Ward Howe and Anna Jarvis started Mothers Day (as we knowit today)in North America.

    In 1870, a time of civil war in America, Julia Ward Howe wanted to create aspecial day to encourage mothers to come together in peace to try and stop theirsons from fighting against each other. This version of Mothers Day only lasted afew years.

    In 1908, Anna Jarvis worked hard to get an official Mothers Day. She succeeded, and

    was also responsible for making the white carnation a popular symbol of the day.Anna believed so strongly in Mothers Day that she even left her job so she couldwork hard to make sure the holiday was recognised and celebrated all over theUnited States of America. In 1914, her hard work was rewarded when MothersDay was officially recognised as a national holiday, to be celebrated on thesecond Sunday in May.

    By the time Anna Jarvis died (in 1948)Mothers Day was being celebrated in overforty countries. Today, Mothers Day is celebrated in over seventy nations aroundthe world and is used to celebrate all the special women in our lives. This couldbe your mother, aunt, sister, cousin or even a close family friend.

    In Australia

    In Australia we have our own special Mothers Dayguardian. Janet Hayden was a woman who livedin Sydney and often visited a friend in hospital. In1923, while at the hospital, she saw that many ofthe patients were older women and mothers who

    were lonely because they did not have regularvisitors. She asked people to donate presents, andschoolchildren and local businesses donated allsorts of goodies for women.

    Mothers Day around the world

    Sweden

    In Sweden, plastic flowers are sold on Mothers Day and the money raised is used

    to help needy mothers and their children.

    A ten-day festival called Durga Puja, which celebrates the mother goddess Durga,is often closely associated with the celebration of Mothers Day in India.

    The former Yugoslavia

    In the former Yugoslavia various family members are celebrated with a series ofholidays, starting on Childrens Day, three days before Christmas. The followingSunday is Mothers Day, and the next Sunday is Fathers Day.

    EthiopiaIn Ethiopia, Mothers Day is celebrated when the rainy season ends. Whenthis day arrives, families return home for a large feast and two or three days ofcelebration. Mothers and daughters rub butter into their skin and sing songs.

    Australia

    In Australia we often treat our mum to breakfast in bed or take her out to lunch ata lovely restaurant. Children often make homemade Mothers Day cards to give

    with some flowers, or perhaps a box of chocolates. What do you do on MothersDay?

    How did Fathers Day begin?So, what about Fathers Day?

    In 1909, a woman named Sonora Smart Doddheard Anna Jarvis giving a Mothers Day sermon atchurch. Unfortunately, Senoras mother had died

    when she was little, but the sermon made her thinkabout her father, whom she loved very much, soshe decided that there should be a special dayto celebrate fathers. She began to work to createa Fathers Day that would be just as special asMothers Day.

    Now, in Australia, Fathers Day is a day to celebratethe love and dedication of fathers, step-fathers,guardians, fathers-in-law, uncles, grandfathers or any special male role models.

    Mothers Day & Fathers Day fast facts Can you say mother in any other languages? Mother is Mre in French,Mutter in German, Madre in Italian and Matka in Polish. Do you think itis a coincidence that all these words begin with M? Not really, as in manylanguages the word for mother begins with the letter M.

    Fathers Day became an increasingly popular celebration during World War II,when many fathers were away at war.

    Its not just mothers who are celebrated, Japan celebrates a NationalChildrens Day called Kodomo no Hi. Would you like to have a Childrens Day

    in Australia? In France, during the years after World War I, December 19 was called La

    Fte des Mres. Mothers were given medals for having children:

    Four or five children would win you a bronze medalSix or seven children would win you a silver medalEight or more children and you would receive a gold medal!

    Using this as a guide, would your mum win any medals?

    During the 1920s and 1930s people thought about joining Mothers Day and

    Fathers Day to make one celebration: Parents Day. Do you think this wouldbe a good idea?

    This is amazing! One woman in Russia had 69 children! This included sixteenpairs of twins, seven sets of triplets and four sets of quadruplets.

    Did you know that August is the most common month for mothers to givebirth to their children?

    The traditional flower of Fathers Day isa rose. Red roses are for living fathersand white roses are for fathers who havepassed away.

    Australians spend around $1.36 billion onMothers Day and $660 million on FathersDay. Thats a huge amount of money!

    Mothers Day and Fathers Day can alsobe used to celebrate other special menor women in our lives. They could be arelative, family friend, teacher or coach.
