TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — The LORD said to Cyrus, his anointed, “I am the LORD, there is no other” (Isaiah 45:1, 4-6). Psalm — Give the Lord glory and honor (Psalm 96). GOD’S GOODNESS
Let us throw ourselves into the ocean of God’s good-ness, where every failing will be cancelled and
anxiety turned into love. —St. Paul of the Cross
IN GOD ALONE Isaiah speaks to us today of Cyrus, King of Persia, anointed by the Lord. God calls Cyrus by name and leads him in service to the Israelites. In this passage we hear that it is the Lord who gives Cyrus his title, who arms him against his enemies, and who opens doors and unbars gates before him. And God does all of this so that the people will know that “I am the LORD,” and that “there is none besides me” (Isaiah 45:6). Paul opens his letter with essentially the same no-tion—that in God alone we find our grace and peace. Paul also gives thanks to God on our behalf, calling to mind our work of faith, hope, and love. And in the fa-miliar Gospel reading, Jesus tells the Pharisees to give to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s.

FEAST OF FAITH Only Say the Word
The bread is broken, the banquet is prepared, and now we are invited to the feast. Once more the priest holds the host, now broken, for us to see, and invites us to behold the one “who takes away the sins of the world.” Truly blessed and happy are those invited to this meal, which is a foretaste of the heavenly banquet, the sup-per of the Lamb (Revelation 19:19). We respond to this invitation with a prayer to the Lord: we acknowledge that we are not worthy, but at the same time we are confident that the One who comes to us can heal us, body and soul. This prayer echoes the story of the cen-turion in Luke’s Gospel. The centurion, a Gentile, asks healing for his servant, but does not consider himself worthy to have Jesus come under his roof—he believes that Jesus can heal his servant with a word, without even seeing him. Jesus is amazed at his faith. It is the same for us. We believe that Jesus speaks to us, comes to us, dwells with us, even though we neither hear his voice nor see his face.

SÓLO EN DIOS Isaías nos habla hoy de Ciro, el rey de Persia, ungido del Señor. Dios llama a Ciro por su nombre y lo con-duce a servir a los israelitas. En este pasaje oímos que es el Señor quien le da a Ciro su título, quien lo arma contra sus enemigos, y quien abre los portones, y no deja nada trancado ante él. Y Dios hace todo esto para que su pueblo llegue a saber que “yo soy el SE-
ÑOR,” y que “no hay otro” (Isaías 45:6). Pablo abre su carta esencialmente con la misma no-ción, que sólo en Dios podemos hallar gracia y paz. Pablo también da gracias a Dios en nuestro nombre, recordando nuestro trabajo fatigoso de fe, esperanza y amor. Y en la familiar lectura del Evangelio, Jesús dice a los fariseos que den al César lo que es del César y a Dios lo que es de Dios.

FIESTA DE LA FE Comunión: dar y recibir
La celebración eucarística es la oración por excelencia de toda la Iglesia; la plenitud de esta celebración es la comunión. Aunque comulgamos personalmente, es una acción totalmente comunitaria. No comulgamos como individuos sino como un solo cuerpo místico de Cristo que somos. Cristo mismo partió su cuerpo y nos lo dio; durante su ministerio público, pidió a sus apóstoles que repartieran el pan a la gente. La comu-nión se nos da porque en sí es un don y regalo de Dios. Si tomamos directamente la comunión empo-brece el significado porque no es un autoservicio o algo que simplemente podemos agarrar. Al comulgar lo que somos, dice san Agustín, estamos llamados a ser lo que comemos. La Eucaristía, como sacra-mento, es un regalo absoluto de Dios, es un estilo de vida, una espiritualidad a vivir, nunca una conquista propia. La Eucaristía, nos lo recuerda Juan Pablo II, “crea comunión y educa a la comunión”. En comunión no sólo se recibe el don, sino que la persona comul-gante, se da a sí misma, a lo que comulga y a la asamblea con quien comulga y vive esa comunión.

TWENTY-NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME October 16th , 2011
THE ROAD TAKEN The folklore of all cultures is filled with stories of fate-ful choices. People find themselves in front of two doors—one door leading to disaster, one to untold bliss. Robert Frost’s famous poem “The Road Not Taken” un-derscores the fact that our lives are forever changed by the choices we make. Week after week, we are offered a choice to declare to others and to our God whom we belong to—the small god of money and possessions, or the great God whom Jesus called Abba (Jesus spoke Aramaic, and this word means Daddy or Papa). On Sunday some of us simply drop into the offertory bas-
ket what we think is good enough, or perhaps a ha-bitual amount that we will never miss, or what we just happen to have in our pocket. How about a di f ferent approach? Whenever we receive a f i n a n c i a l b l e s s i n g , whether from a weekly paycheck, a personal al-lowance, an appreciation of investments, a sales bonus, or even a lottery windfall, first and fore-most let’s thank God for this blessing. Then take a portion—the amount is
up to us—and share it gratefully with others: half to build up the Church, and the other half to good causes you favor. This places God as the highest priority in our lives. In gratitude for God’s overwhelming love for us, we give back a portion of what we have received, and only then keep the rest for ourselves. The scrip-tures challenge us to give this “first fruits,” not the tiny part that’s left over after we’ve done what we want. Modern scientific research shows that people who give generously tend to live happier and longer lives. So becoming a grateful giver changes how we think about life, and makes us true stewards of God’s constant blessings.
Living Stewardship Now Did you know that the Vatican has a yearly operating budget less than half the budget of a major university? God’s work—in the parish, the diocese, and around the world—depends on us. Is your giving generous, or the least you can spare?
EL CAMINO QUE TOMEMOS La trayectoria de todas las culturas está llena de histo-rias con decisiones fatídicas. La gente muchas veces se encuentra frente a dos puertas, una lleva al desastre, la otra a una dicha incalculable. El famoso poema de Robert Frost “The Road Not Taken” (El Camino no To-mado) subraya el hecho de que nuestras decisiones cambian para siempre el curso de nuestra vida. Sema-na tras semana se nos brinda la oportunidad de decla-rar a quién pertenecemos, al dios minúsculo del dinero y las posesiones o al gran Dios a quien Jesús llamó Ab-ba, que en arameo (el idioma de Jesús) quiere decir papá o papaíto. El domingo algunos de nosotros ponemos en la colecta aquello que pensamos es lo suficiente o tal vez una cantidad habitual que nunca echare-mos de menos, o si no, el cambio que ten-gamos en el bolsillo en ese momento. ¿Y si enfocáramos esto desde otro ángulo? Cuando recibimos un beneficio financiero, ya sea por el sueldo, por algún subsidio personal, por el rendimiento de una in-versión, algún tipo de bono o aun la ga-nancia inesperada en la lotería, hemos de dar gracias en primer lugar a Dios por tal bendición. Después debemos sacar una porción (la cantidad es decisión nuestra) y compartirla agradecidamente con los de-más; una mitad para construir la Iglesia y la otra para alguna causa buena de nuestra predilección. Esta actitud pone a Dios como la mayor prioridad de nuestra vida. En gratitud por el inmenso amor que Dios nos tiene debemos primero de-volver una porción de lo que hemos recibido antes de quedarnos con el resto. Las Escrituras nos desafían a dar de los “primeros frutos” y no de la parte mínima que nos sobra después de hacer lo que hemos querido. Las investigaciones científicas modernas demuestran que las personas que dan generosamente tienden a vi-vir más tiempo y más felices. Además, dar con gratitud cambia nuestra manera de pensar sobre la vida y nos hace verdaderamente responsables por las constantes bendiciones que recibimos de Dios.
La Corresponsabilidad Vivida Ahora ¿Sabías que el Vaticano tiene un presupuesto anual para sus operaciones que es menos de la mitad del de una universidad grande? La obra de Dios, tanto en la parroquia, como en la diócesis y alrededor del mundo, depende de nosotros. ¿Es tu donativo generoso o das lo menos posible?
Stewardship Renewal / Renovación de Corresponsabilidad
Dear Parishioners, Stewardship is never over, it is an ongoing event! Many parishioners have returned their weekly offering pledge cards. We are blessed indeed by so many won-derful parishioners. I thank you and ask the Lord to bless you and your families for your continued sacrifice. The response of our people to the Lord’s call is truly beautiful. We re-ceived over 500 pledge cards with your financial com-mitment, and we hope to receive many more in the near future. The courage and commitment demonstrated by people filling their weekly offering pledges was marvelous. I am encouraged to see more and more families coming to understand Stewardship as “A Way of Life”. As our Parish moves ahead, these Treasure Offerings will be of considerable help budgeting our finances. My personal best wishes to you for a wonderful and truly anointed year of Stewardship. Recibimos más de 500 tarjetas con su compromiso financiero y en los proximos días esperamos recibir muchas más.
